Is it Cheaper to Build a Scratch Built SCX24?

Nice! Just had this idea because I basically fully outfitted my scx24 bronco. It’s completely upgraded besides axels and chassis. Basically saves money since you’re gonna upgrade it anyway so you’re saving money in the long run by not buying the bone stock rtr. Thanks for making this video. And for everyone seeing this in 2024. Prices changed now of course but they’re not far off from when this vid was posted. And everything is easily available now and they have way cooler chassis kits now such as the meus ripper and meus mb24 kits which will save you money on buying the chassis and body since it’s all in one. Plus it’ll give your rig a 10x boost in coolness. And injora is stepping up the game and have TX and RX and esc kits for a cheap price. Lots of cool goodies now a days. Good luck everyone!

By the time you have replaced every part it's not necessarily cheaper but you end up with a whole spare SCX24 sitting in a box which you can skip buying altogether now that the aftermarket is so good.

The way i look at it, it’s kind of a wash. If you buy the basic rtr truck and you upgrade it you in theory might have enough spare parts to have not just one but two crawlers!! I recently got back into RC and I’ve been eyeballing the traxxas trx4m and i can’t keep anything stock so I’ve been thinking what you’re thinking and but all the upgrade parts to build me a Trx4m that’s built to my liking

One thing your failed to include and that's labor. Someone had to build and box that little RC vehicle. Generally when you buy a kit, you do so with the intention of adding your own upgrades and everyone does. Labor is never a factor if it's yours but labor is always a factor in pre- assembled RC anything. Because this stuff comes from China, labor is dirt cheap there because China holds no value on life. They do not care about their people there and life is hard there. Those working in factories making our RC vehicles are usually supporting an entire family located somewhere else in China. Keep that in mind. Shipping from China is usually paid for by everyone in the form of taxes and tariffs.

Definitely something that has to be considered is the must-do mods. I think if you buy a stock SCX24 and want to actually do stuff with it/ make it fun and capable, these are the minimum upgrades: Servo, wheels, tires, high clearance 4 links, steering link, 050 motor, brass for front (paddies or knuckles), hub extensions, plus 1 extra battery. So take your stock unit price and add all this stuff. Then compare a ground up build with the same parts as above plus the rest that's needed. And I may have missed it in your comparison, but building ground up you're also going to have to buy a controller.

My first 3 Scx24 trucks I bought new in box rtr and spent a lot of money in the first year for upgrades. The 12 trucks after that I have scratch built from ground up. I like it better that way. My wallet and bank account doesn’t but I do lol

dollar hobbyz was great for attempting to build stuff from scratch ,i rebuilt my funny car several times for way less ,only tires and electronics were spendy

I have one scx24 rn that has a decent amount of upgrades. I think If I ever get another one I'll build it from the ground up especially now that I now what I'm doing after having already worked one one. I would end up replacing literally everything there is to replace anyway so there wouldn't be much reason to buy a new stock truck.

it is cheaper to piece together, i got a carbon frame for $2.99 off amazon and bead locks wheels and tires for $10 my first scx24 was $123 used(amazon)(4x4 kenworth c500 style) second $110, 2 owner(fb market place)(on my chamnel ) i had gone threw 2 stock steering servos and got pissed on quality now run a 20kg off stock esc, im new to this rc stuff and really do enjoy seeing the crazy side of rc like two frames combined for tractor trailers and attention to detail of some scale vehicles which dont exist in stores anymore, this world is about going world to world and doing greater for earth but for now its about power and self enrichment, let bring back slander and not let us be viewed as f*****s

what region are you in? Ive been looking at all these parts within the last 2 days and they are about 10 bux more than what you are showing. Been contemplating making one from scratch vs buying one then upgrade. in my mind if im buying upgrades might as well build one from scratch.

Hi , I am bulding a SCX 24 from scratch can you pair any controler to any reciver. Never built a rc car or truck before. also the conectors fall out of the reciver. The pins are not big enough for the conector, thats why I am asking. Want to upgrade to the esc and reciver you metioned.

The receiver I mentioned in the video is the v1 receiver I believe, which can only be bound to the v1 transmitter (the controller). Any transmitter will not bind to just any receivers because it has to be on the right protocol. I run Flysky transmitters and receivers because they’re cheap and actually pretty decent, so a flysky receiver will not bind up to a spectrum transmitter because they use different protocols.

it's definitely cheaper to build your own from upgraded parts than it is to buy a piece of shit that you have to throw away to replace with a bunch of upgraded parts and the electronics aren't worth shitt in these trucks

Yea when I got my first sx24 I drove it for the longest time stock and I loved it. But looking back it’s laughable that there that bad and people are still buying them. Still fun though.
