Thank you for this lesson. In my opinion the message that we should ALWAYS be happy is part of the reason for depression among Christians, we need to know that it is ok to feel upset at injustices and disappointments and it is ok to complain about it to God.

Thanks for this. I have been in "lament mode" for so long. Including today. I just wonder if it will ever end. I'm so tired.

The Lamentation of David by Elam Rotem and David's Lamentation by William Billings are both examples of what I would imagine lamentations would sound like sung in a corporate fashion in a service. They're both beautiful works.

Singing the Psalms in corporate worship-is this something that we ought to do? If so, why do we content ourselves with snippets of them? I was a bit surprised that in all the churches I’ve been a member in, no one has advocated for adding Psalms to our Sunday worship services. I’m not sure why this is. Could you please shed some light on this? It’s almost as if the church was allergic to the Psalms.

Heman the Ezrahite who wrote Psalm 88 was from the tribe if Levi, the grandson of Samuel the prophet, had Temple responsibilities., close to David. Yet he writes this Psalm saying he was afflicted from his youth in v15. This is deep Disorientation and dies not move thru nto Reorientation. But ir means God incutes us to mive TOWARD HIM even with our most agonising existential agony that gave WITH HIM...GOD is INVITING us to PROCESS our deepest most painful emotions WITH HIM including feeling forgitten by Him like Heman felt. Psalm 88 is about a deeoer level of worship combined with profound Lament ...rhat rhe WESTERN CHURCH dies not allow. Its like the Wrstern Church has a gargantuan sign above its Head: LAMENT IS FORBIDDEN HERE.

some are scriptures for those who are in Christ and walking in the fullness of truth and the lament is for those who are not there yet as in James... or in Second Chronicles...

@@robwagnon6578 oh no, that is definitely not correct. Spirit-filled believers lament ...as did Jesus Himself.

@@DiscipleDojo be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Heb. 13:5 NKJ) And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. (1 Tim. 6:8 NKJ) Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: (Phil. 4:11 NKJ) Now when the people complained, it displeased the LORD; for the LORD heard it, and His anger was aroused. (Num. 11:1 NKJ) although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful (Rom. 1:21 NKJ) giving thanks always for all things to God the Father (Eph. 5:20 NKJ) Let us preach the Word with integrity and not give place to discontentment, complaining, self-pity, and ingratitude, as an excuse to "work through" something.

@@Dizerner "I was given a thorn in the flesh, and three times I prayed for it to be taken away. But then I was told by someone online to suck it up and stop whining like an ungrateful little child." - not 2 Corinthians 12 There is certainly a need to take heed of the bad examples of this behavior from the Exodus. But there's far too much evidence in the other direction--Elijah's breakdown after Jezebel ordered his death, just to name one--for us to dismiss the fact that even faithful believers sometimes need to express strong lament. I mean, there's even a section of the Bible called Lamentations! Why bother having a whole book dedicated to something that's inherently wrong?
