Is It FMA? | Go Play!
Y’know what’s great about adult nerd life? We have swords, and we can afford to buy “safer” swords for training. However, as children, we started playing in the backyard using sticks as swords to slay imaginary dragons. Play is a beautiful way to build a lasting connection to martial arts.
Also, what is great about FMA is that we still use sticks. Rattan is fairly forgiving when it comes to impact. Unlike oak, it flexes when you get hit by it. Don’t get me wrong it still hurts, but that is part of the fun. The hard part is getting over the fear of getting hit. Building confidence through capability comes with experience, training, and education. It is a messy process full of mistakes, bumps, and bruises. However, the product can result in a resilient and confident individual. This is why “play” is an essential platform for learning. It allows for exploration and experimentation without dire consequences. Using proper training tools and safer protocols is important, but you can make do with what you have. What is important is good coaching from an experienced mentor who has enough restraint to pull their punches, stick swings, etc.
When it comes to any combative weapons art, not everyone will move on from rattan or oak to steel. That is ok. The journey of a student is up to them. They will go as far as they want and are able to. In any case, enjoy the process with them, because as much as it is for them, it is for you. You the instructor are also allowed to have fun and play.
