I am 65 and I too am blown away by Ren. We grew up in an era of some of the most fantastic music, the 60's, 70's and 80's paved the way for the future of music. My main genre was and is Progressive Rock, with the likes of Yes and Pink Floyd etc. They set new and different standards, often mixing classical influences with modern music. Something special went on back then and I have to say I thought it was lost. I never thought we would ever see the likes of those bands and artists ever again, now we have auto tuning and Ai. I am so glad to be able to say that I have been proved wrong, Ren is a once in a generation music/performer genius. I hate to make comparisons but I will anyway. There is one person I feel made the impact I think Ren is about to make on the world and I never thought there would ever be anyone else who would come close and that is David Bowie.

I am 60 years old and I’m definitely not into rap. I watch reaction videos almost every evening. I saw where a lot of people were reacting to this video and I just kept skipping over it. I finally watched someone react to it a few weeks ago and I’ve probably watched at least 25-30 other people react to it since which means I’ve heard and seen it a lot! The first time I watched it, I cried. His pure talent is undeniable. I know a song is really good if… 1) it makes me cry or laugh really hard, 2) gives me goose bumps, &/or 3) leaves me absolutely speechless! (Just ask my husband…I talk ALL THE TIME!) 😂 This one really got to me and I cried because I don’t know anyone personally with mental illness (the mental illness part is just how I see this song/video). After about the 3rd or 4th time seeing/hearing it, I could actually make it through the song without crying and I really paid attention to everything going on; the lights, the guitar, his two voices, etc. To me, this was the closest illustration I’ve ever seen showing how someone might feel with a mental illness and I didn’t have a clue at how difficult it must be on the person with the mental illness. This kid’s talent is just totally unbelievable! His writing skills are beyond genius, the theatrics, the guitar playing, everything was so uniquely genius! I too hope he gets all the recognition he deserves. God bless him and thank you for your reaction!!

Hi Karen. Your 3 criteria for a good song, 100% aligns with myself. I love how you have described how/why you like it. I have watched the video, and the reaction videos more times than I can count now. I have shared this song, and much of his music with any one that I know who appreciates a wonderful/talented/raw/honest/beautiful/creative..............................could go on and on...musician/performer. I am still, within myself, trying to find, place, and express all that I feel when hearing this song. I cannot. I do not think that I ever will. I feel like there is no one or even combined adjectives to describe this. Maybe that is the point. Cheers to you. Be well, be safe. Be you, always.

Even when you hear those opening guitar chords you can hear some notes are overplayed, I believe this is on purpose as he is establishing the feeling that something is not quite right. Every aspect of this performance is a work of craftsmanship that is seldom even approached by other artists. Another indication of the genius behind the performance is the fact that it was filmed "Live", and as such comes, so close to the perfection (If not slightly eclipsing Queens Live Aid performance back in '85). Truly I hope Ren reaches the levels that he so richly deserves. D.J. Fat Cat 1989 - 2019 retired.

I don’t know if this will finally give him the recognition he deserves , after Dignity, It’s Alright, and so much more…. This is an outpouring of the mind, the bleeding of a heart, the wrenching of the guts, the cry of the soul….. It will not be an easy song for most to swallow, it will not be a pop hit, but I hope enough people will be able to recognize the genius of it all….

From an musician's perspective I see this is like a magnum opus from a musical genius. I say like because I don't what else he is capable of and he is still so young. pure fkn genius. His use of dimished is perfection. This combined with the dissonance he creates that signifies the dark side painting a haunting picture with amazing sonic imagery. Coming of age in the 80’s I perceived rap as being mostly poor quality poetry spoken over sampled beats. Since discovering a select few modern artists I now wish I had paid more attention (though my critic still holds for many rappers). Now, especially, when I find a rapper that puts together their own beats and writes amazing poetry, I eat it up. Ren is one of those but so much more on top of that.

I have been down the Ren rabbit hole for the last 2 or 3 weeks and watched dozens of reactions to Hi Ren and many other Ren releases. All reactors to this particular sone have been almost as fascinating to watch as the music video itself by Ren. I stumbled on yours late in that process, but yours was the first I felt compelled to leave a comment on. The fact that you were previously aware of Ren before watching this gives your insight into this video, something other reactors have not had. I appreciated that and found it insightful and moving (I'm an old guy now, so I get emotional way too easily, lol).

In discovering Ren through this video, I feel I discovered a rare treasure. I've watched many reaction videos; in every single one, people's mouths fall open. They are stunned. And then many many of them cry.

You are the first reactor I have watched for this song that already knew who Ren was. The fact that you were just as blown away by this as I was says a lot. This is the greatest song I have heard in a long long time.

I was thinking how well that Ren would do if he was in a movie of some sort ... I couldn't help but draw a parallel between Ren and Johnny Depp. They are both musicians and clearly Ren can act. I keep imagining that those two would light up a screen together. This is just the start with Ren. I have a feeling he will be WOWING us for a long time coming.

Yep Ive said same, and first time i heard Oasis, I knew they were going to the top of their game. You know when you know, and it's rare, really, rare. lots of great bands around, and thankful for them all, but only a small percentage have this level of skill. Ren is so down to earth. I hope he remains independant, want to see him and HIS crew get the candy. Everyone should donate to his gofundme page, as a thankyou, and to give back to the artist. Support him while he goes through this treatment in Canada.

I really enjoyed your reaction! You are so fortunate to have seen him live. I would love that! You are absolutely right - this is new, different, special - Ren is amazingly talented and deserves to go far with his career. He is struggling to pay for treatement he is getting in Canada right now and someone as specially gifted as he is should not be in that position. He should have millions in the bank, but that is the way mainstream music goes. I'm putting what I can into his Go Fund Me account and I know others are giving what they can too. And those that can't are spreading his music and his name around. Much love to you from the Southern U.S.

I think you would be surprised, i am 70, I am a fan of Angelina Jordan and many other singers, many you have reacted to. But this is amazing and spellbinding because it is true of everyone but to small amounts. We all have good and evil, and most of the time good wins. Sometimes in some people it is hard to contain, and to be able to get a glimpse into these people's life is breathtaking and I feel the need to pray for him to be able to continue in the way of hope and good.

I have watched this song over and over. I have followed this guy since he started singing with his band The Big Push and his friend Sam Tomkins. I am 68yrs Old, i remember when the Beatles wrote Help and the reaction people had, how it resonated with them. this, for me, is beyond that. It's a work of genius. It should be owned by the public especially in todays world of mental stress. Wow, well done REN, I FOR ONE BELIEVE IN YOU. Love the reaction.

Yes, as iconic as the release of the Beatles, but more so because he is a by the people for the people independent which is the power in what he does and a good part of why hi Ren is so powerful. I hear people say they feel heard by this vulnerable bard like they’ve never been before in their life because it’s so relatable. It has the impact of the Beatles with the mental acuity and heaviness of Paul Atreides of Arrakis. This carries with it a beacon that no self serving media corporation promotion could ever equal. It’s a new form. Performance art is the most powerful media on the planet. This genius knows that. Boom

Dear Music Junkie: I know I’m late to this reaction but I just had to respond to your reaction. I am a 63 year old grandmother who is a complete “rocker chick”. I have to point out where you were right and wrong in your assessment of Hi Ren. You were wrong when you said ‘this might not be your cup of tea’. I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY at the brilliance of this young man and his masterpiece. I have shared it with many of my friends, neighbors, and coworkers, none of whom (myself included) care for rap music. Everyone has absolutely LOVED this performance. This transcends the genre of ‘rap’, and rather encapsulates something we can all relate to- that struggle between good and evil, happy and sad, sanity and insanity. He is sheer genius, and I am so thankful I came across this song. I can identify with it as I have been struggling as well, and cannot wait to share it with my therapist on my next visit. You are 100% correct when you said he needs recognition for this. I keep hoping that someone starts a petition to the American Grammy Institution to have this included somehow in their next awards, even if they have to make up a category to do it. I love this song so much I am now going through all the reactors seeing it for the first time. I still cry. This is the most brilliant, beautiful, relatable, and genius work of art that I have ever seen/heard in my 63 years. Trust me when I say that I am sharing it far and wide. ❤

You're the only reactor I've seen so far that was familiar with Ren beforehand and that's really cool! 3 months and Hi Ren is almost to 10 million views. Never seen a video take off like that, especially considering the length and the world's very short attention span. But it is so engrossing that you don't even notice. His last video, Illest of Our Time, dropped 9 days ago and is just about at a million views.
