I must have watched a hundred reactions to this song, and it still makes me tear up every time. My favorite reactions to this piece of art are of those like yourself who make their profession in music. They always start out quite analytical in their approach, but then we get to see that moment when his words touch your soul, and it's really beautiful. Like Ren, who bared his pain in this piece, you have allowed yourself to expose your own vulnerability through this reaction, and it is excellent, and helpful to all of us who struggle with our inner demons of self-doubt and fear. Thank you!

I've been doing the same, watching a few reactions each day. I've never seen such a consistent high level of response from most of the reactors. Just one guy, in my almost one hundred reaction videos watched, went "mneh!" But that's because the jealousy was dripping from his every pore! ;) There comes a time in every musician's life when you know you can't compete with someone you are listening to, ever, and are very glad you found such talent to energize your joy in music.

I SO appreciate men who are willing to show their vulnerability and emotional side, for everyone to see, we are so conditioned from early childhood that men don't cry, if you fall, you get yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on. Men need to see this, and you show it beautifully. We do ourselves no favors by keeping our emotions locked up inside, we need to speak what ails us, get it out and look at it. When you verbalize it, you're pulling it out of its vault, and by doing that, it loses much of its power over you. Thank you!

Like @beldavius, I have watched many reactions to this video. I have listened to this song so many times in just a few days since finding Ren Gill...I'm late to the party. What amazes me is seeing professionals who start out wanting to react (to vocals, guitar riffs, etc) in one way or the other, but get sucked into the song and completely lose where they are or what they planned to do. You started out the video reacting like a vocal coach and talking about his falsetto range, but when it came to my favorite part of the song where he 'stands on his own 2 feet' and sings falsetto again and keeps that pitch, you were stone cold and teary eyed. That is the beauty of music. That is the beauty of art.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from an old newspaper interview and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales in 1990 or ‘91 (depending on which source you cite), he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

I was waiting for this one, thank you for being vulnerable, this song just wrecks you... in a good way. Another song from Ren called "Sick Boi" deals with his disease, combined with an epic beat and society criticism, an absolutely amazing piece. What I also love by Ren - a trilogy which there haven't been many reactions to - is the tale of Jenny & Screech. In this piece he is not writing about his struggle, but tells a captivating story like a modern-day bard, which is thrilling musically and is also deep concerning social criticism.
@crunchydragontreats6692 Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve seen, “Sick Boi” is the prequel of “Hi Ren”. Lyrically tied together “Hi Ren” takes place some weeks after “Sick Boi”. Also, they are performed in the same space but decorated differently to represent two different location. This is a common theatrical technique to show the same general location but different specific location. In this case “Sick Boi” in the doctor’s office and “Hi Ren” in his room after being admitted. Both in the same sanatorium. Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friends.

Thank you so much Ken for BEING so generously vulnerable with us! You didn't cut out the difficult parts, you took us with you, with your emotions! Thank you for showing us your divine side. We all need more of this!

I love that you allowed yourself to show us how 'Hi Ren' moved you, as it did me, and so many others. Thank you for sharing.

I love the expression you finally had when he started singing from the top of his lungs. That expression symbolizes my feeling every time I listen to this song - for hours two nights straight now, that is.

Something tells me that you have had your own struggles with this dance Ken. The part where he says, "the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope"... yeah, that hit home with me in a big way! It's artist like Ren that remind us of the power of music and why we feel it in our souls! It reminds us that music is healing, and hopefully... this song reaches all the people who need to hear it!

I've been an obsessive music fan for most of my 40something years and lately I've kind of felt I've heard about everything worth hearing and then something like this comes along and resets all my expectations

Beautiful art creates emotions, especially when that art is another persons soul...So honest ...Ren is a bard for our time and describes his genre as Bardcore...Loved the reaction as always ...peace..

Ren is the most creative and original artist I've heard at least since Bowie in tje 70s. This song is no flash in tjebpan either he has a lot of great stuff ranging from pop to full on rap. He is also a truely independent artist, everything you hear is written and done by him, and all the videos are by him and his friend Samuel. Typically, these are live single shot videos, but despite being low budget are inventive and very well done. Given your background I suggest your next reaction should be to the "the tales of Jenny and Screech (full) a trilogy if songs (tales) which us a Shakesperian tragedy in 3 acts sung by a wandering minstrel. The version with (full) at the end has all 3 songs in the correct order. You'll be blown away by the storytelling amity and sheer genius of this young man.

I like the David Bowie reference

Well, not all the videos. Luke Clegg is another filmmaker collaborator of Ren's and there may be others too 😊

I was also thinking of the 70s, but the great storyteller Harry Chapin, not Bowie. Thematically different, but this song reminded me of There Only Was One Choice

I hear Bowie in his other music. He must have listened to the guy. It's all the background melodic detail that's so clearly been painstakingly worked on where I notice it. Lots of the drum and base era Bowie in there. Also how he brings in reoccurring words or topics into different songs...not something Bowie did exclusively but cool to see. He also seems to retain that same love of the eclectic..learn about everything you can and chuck it in.

It's ok, I was a blubbing mess after the first listen, destroyed me. But in a good way, felt less alone when I am alone.

Your reaction goes from thinking it’s about all of us and how we deal with things and then you realize he is taking about himself and his battle which a lot of people can relate to and many can empathize with. Your face softens and it is moving.
