Sir I just picked the game back up when I saw ashlands came out. This was the exact video I was looking for. Too many things get spoiled by the “everything new added in the update” videos so many KZbinrs do nowadays. Easy like

the d-day esque nature of Ashlands is the things that worries me, if people end up making two or three boats in attempts to try to recover their body, that is not going to go over well no matter how much the elite try hards say its awesome. You gotta let people build that portal before you crank up the difficulty on them. There's gotta be safe places to land. It's gonna be a fail if you butcher before they've even had a chance to get portals down.
@Amatsuichi
@Amatsuichi Ай бұрын
ist not that hard to get there, just bring mats with you and a workbench to repair your boat by using the pillars in the red sea... boat has huge HP so u can kill all mobs attacking you while repairing the boat on the fly... then build a small remote portal close to the landing site and you are fine

@@AmatsuichiThat *can* vary. On the edge of the waters (not even near the stone pillars) and just one serpent nearly destroyed the boat cos it just would not come out from under the boat. If there had been other mobs (trying to avoid spoilers here), then I may well have lost the boat.
@Amatsuichi
@Amatsuichi Ай бұрын
@@losdemas2000 ofc random things can happen and success is never guaranteed... its actually best played as a duo or with more players who can just protect the boat while you are steering.. to me the workbench tactic seemed crucial to maximize the chance to land + after landing a quick portal which isnt easily reachable by mobs + after landing, remove feather cloak to avoid higher fire damage due to its nerf

I am playing the ptb, and have done the landing experience twice now, once with a fellow player and once solo. It is scary, but definitely doable without dieing if you do it slowly and cautiously. First time with the fellow we rushed in and promptly got wiped out, resulting in a tough recovery. 2nd time I did it again on a solo world with a different character, and managed to land and build a little outpost without being killed once. But it is very definitely the toughest biome by far, for now.

Is anyone else finding it almost impossible to get anywhere without being surrounded by an entire mob of enemies? Seems like they’ve maybe over populated the spawns

I love the content IronGate is putting out, but I do not share their vision on creating spaces where you do not want to be. For me, Ashlands, Mistlands, and Swamp are biomes where I can only go if I need something from there, or to progress the game, I never want to build or just exist there generally. I kind of understand that dangerous places and endgame content should not look or feel welcoming, but I still wish for biomes that are beautiful to be in, build and explore. Am I wrong on this one?
@NickRawcliffe
@NickRawcliffe Ай бұрын
I think you raise a really good point. I understand what they’re doing too and think it’s good content but it would be nice to have a new place that actually feels cozy to live in instead of living in the starting biome for years.
@Bezayne

No, you are not wrong, totally valid point of view. I do get that a lot of people like the Ashlands look, but for me it is definitely not a place I would want a permanent base in, just by the looks of the area alone. As opposed to Mistlands, which is very beautiful if you manage to find a reasonably big, mist-free location. My current big bulding project is in such a place, but I am waiting now to get my hands on all the new build pieces Ashlands brings.

@@Bezayne mistlands indeed has very beautiful and unique terrain generation. However, i wish that the heavy mist would be resorted to points of interest, or maybe you could destroy some contraption in the dungeons to lessen the mist around said dungeon.

Ashlands is not that bad because it's flat and easy to build on, plus Grausten is readily available and makes for awesome and really strong builds. Mistlands is the worst biome for a base because the terrain is awful and you can't see anything. Swamp is also pretty bad because you're always wet and it's painful to navigate

Ashland is a good update! Very challenging. Sailing and arriving to the Ashland feels like a Viking D-Day. The boat is very solid. Just beach it and survive. Make sure you bring a portal kit, metal, and everything else to survive. Ressource collecting is easy, most ressources will be running towards you to kill you. It’s jus a matter of slashing your way thru it and collect it. Not much grinding required if you compare it to the bronze grinding. It is a very hard biome compared to the others but once you manage the initial shock, it’s manageable. Feels like a Swamp that caught fire. Enemies coming from everywhere, creeping on you. That unsafe feeling of the swamp is back. Foes aren’t too bad, but they come in big numbers and fighting them attracts others from everywhere. It sets the bar way high for the next update, the Deep North.

I don't agree that Ashlands dungeons are complex. They are simple to such a big degree that dealing with them is more simple than just go through the biome back and forth (that is, dealing with natural spawn and new spawn triggered the moment you've started to deal with natural spawn encountered is more difficult). It's one of the two main dissapointments of the biome (the other one related to very low initial spawn/random spawn ratio) - they are too small, not randomly procedurelly generated and you basically can deal with them better if you just avoid using new mechanics introduced specifically for them... Not to mention that the most difficult (in terms of the sudden unpredictable deaths on average) in the biome is not fighting but mining...

I think you should be able to get the new portal after defeating bonemass/moder Having to go to the ashlands for it is way too far in the game in my opinion. It can be really useful to transport iron and copper from the mistlands so you can finally start building without a worry

I'm not going to use magic ever, I'm a Viking not a herb nerd, if all playstyles ain't viable, then either magic needs to be nerfed or melee needs to be buffed, it's a shame they have strayed so far from their Steam game description!

@@MourningSin He's talking about the original description for the game on Steam, not the mythology. And he raises a good point. Just because magic has been introduced should not mean that has to be the only viable path forward. He's also just simply trying to be funny.

It's far worse than Mistlands in its current state to be frank. The artwork and atmosphere are spectacular and there's a lot of content, but between the spawn rate and the numerous bugs it's very tedious and I lost interest after a couple of days whereas I played Mistlands for months from the day it hit PTB. I think the quality and bugginess of the update are in a worse state than Mistlands was when it first dropped. Now of course PTB is for testing so we shouldn't expect a finished product, but there are bugs which seem obvious enough that they shouldn't have required players to find them. Really hoping the devs take the feedback seriously and improve things before launch.

I have the opposite feeling regarding Mistlands-Ashlands. After my first experience with Mistlands in vanilla Valheim (everything except boss fight) I've played for more than year just in my mod and only up to Plains (repeated several times for testing purposes, also there is much much more to do in my mod in early biomes than in vanilla). And to test Ashlands I've used the same character world as for Mistlands. Naturally, I had a base with Mistlands workbenches/items and had to return to the biome to kill the boss/farm some more resources. And at the point I've realized how much I hate everything about Mistlands. Not only the biome itself and it's gameplay, I hate Mistlands workbenches, I hate Mistlands items, building materials - all of that is very ugly and looks out of place in comparison with all other biomes. So when we started a fight with the boss and I found a way how to cheese it, I without a doubt did it. As for Ashlands, I also expected it to be ugly. Reasonably ugly due to inital lava-undead positioning of the biome. But I've been really surprised that it appeared to be much less ugly than Mistlands, almost not ugly at all. Again, Mistlands could really be done as Dvergr biome, especially already having in mind Ashlands - that is, deadly, mystical, technological but not ugly. But for some reason it's the most ugly biome from all - insects, goo, ticks, entrails... Why? I just don't know.

When it comes to difficulty, I always end up with a kind of funny situation where everyone keeps telling me this and that biome is super difficult, so I always end up overpreparing, with fully maxed out gear from the last biome, and it ruins any sense of challenge to the new biome for me. I found the Mistlands to be generally pretty easy because of this. I think it's probably best to just try it out yourself, and take it with a grain of salt when someone says a new biome is extremely difficult, because it might not be that difficult for you, or they might not have had the best gear when they tried it, etc.

The music is excellent? It's the same as in the Frost Caves, like an Jazz ensemble on LSD are just see-sawing a bow over violins randomly; it's atrocious and is disconcerting. After the inct double ambience of the music in the other biomes it's sad that Irongate have chosen the weird jazz style trashy music they have. Love the game and have 2000+ hours in so the music doesn't spoil it for me but I do switch it off every time I go to the Ashlands.
