in brief, you can study psychology with the exception that you have: knowledge on Aqeedah and SOLID knowledge on Quran and Sunnah So you can know what's true and what's not in the field of psychology.

Personally, I want to study psychology but i have a different POV on the situation. I want to study psychology because I am fascinated by how complex the human mind was created by Allah subhanallah. I also want to help other fellow muslims who struggle with depressions or other psychological-related issue, I know that many muslims are afraid of going to see a psychologist that isn't muslim because they fear that the psychologist wouldn't understand them well enough. If I can prevent someone from killing themselves because of all the issues they face in their life, wouldn't it be a good thing. Everyone needs someone to talk to, and sometimes some people don't have the chance of talking to someone in their life so they need a psychologist to express themselves and hopefully feel better with time. To me a psychologist is mainly here to help people find a way to resolve their life issues, have an external point of view, and find a way to bring harmony back in their lives. Also many psychologists are needed in hostage situations, to get the aggressor to free the hostages by talking to them through a mic and therefore if successful saving many lives. Or psychologists in prison, trying to help criminals get on the right path again. And so many more examples

Shaykh, will all due respect, this is only one of the viewpoints of understanding human behaviour. Much of the understanding today is scientific, and objective. In dealing with mental illnesses also psychology has made tremendous progress.

This is like saying it is not permissible to study medicine/Biology because it has the theory of evolution by Darwin which states all human beings have evolved from apes. Psychology isn't merely the psychodynamic approach. It's a study of human behavior. And the prophet (PBUH) was the model for whole humanity, would it make sense NOT to analyze his behavior? Everything he ever did was for us to learn from. Allah SWT has given us the intellect to reflect upon such things because we ought to, and all knowledge is from Him as well. If he hadn't willed it, we would never have been able to understand anyone's personality as well. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) even used to make Dua to relieve him from depression and anxiety, which proves the existence of such imbalances.

Psychology is really a legit discipline with a strong scientific basis, people shouldn’t just understand it solely through the psychodynamic approach as the shaykh kinda just did now. Psychology is full of established and totally logical approaches, such as the biological, behavioural, social learning, cognitive and humanistic approaches that have all, without fail, come out with revolutionary real word applications. I understand what Shaykh Assim was saying about the psychodynamic approach but that strand was the most dismissed by other psychologists anyway in comparison to the others and not much from its theory has been implemented into the practical psychology we see today i.e. psychotherapy is a lot less common nowadays compared to CBT and others. Modern psychologists acknowledge that Freud was writing at a time when attitudes towards gender were very backwards anyway aswell, so his concepts and theories just naturally haven’t really been inherited by those in the paradigm who had succeeded him

Thats all nice and dandee , but do you agree with the shaykh that a person needs to be well versed in aqeeda and imaan before entering such a study? I know i do.

why not just make islamic psychology, based on the deen and the science on how things work. after all what the shaik doesn't like is some ideologies within the psychological field, that go the same for all fields of medicine, it doesn't mean you have to follow them or that it's foundational to psychology. for example, is it haram to study genes because there are some genealogists believe that we evolved from single cells, into what we are over millions of years? in the end, you take the practical knowledge that helps people, and then for theory, you dismiss what goes against Islam.

I used to study Psychology, it was a interesting field at first but their ridiculous dependence on science and theories began to get very moronic. On top of that, they completely downplay spiritual healing (Ruqyah) and make it sound like it's some weird mental effect instead of it being means of an actual cure because they downplay religion alot. I also disliked the mental gymnastics they go through to justify very ill intentions of human behavior. It isnt all bad but has major flaws

Na'am, I am studying social welfare science which is based on sociology and other disciplines. One of the nature of sociology is categorical which means it doesn't deal with good and bad or moral and immoral. And there are so much theory in this discipline that is nonsense.

That "Islamic filter" is not only for psychology studies, but I'm glad that you mentioned. People should ALWAYS! have that filter on, no matter what occassion or study. (Example: finances-> understand what Riba means). Nowadays, it's all about what we can choose from and do what we like and what we want... Reminder, the non believers use psychology how to attract more people through marketing campaigns or social apps (more sales and more users)

I think you are wrong about it its not fro disbelievers or something like that its just the study of mind and behaviour, those scientists have their own theories but it doesn't mean that they are right they just gave their best opinion and they dont claim to be correct because mind is so complicated. I want to study psychology and quran too, because quran helps me in my studies. In psychology you can find how babies behave whats, iq, emotions, mental illnes. If it wasnt for psychology how could we cure some people who have mentall illnes and need some pills to go normal or for example OCD if it wasnt for psychology people would think its the devils work . This is just my opinion il i have bad English please sheikh think about it and please reply if you can, have a nice day ❤.

The seeker after the truth is not one who studies the writings of the ancients and, following his natural disposition, puts his trust in them, but rather the one who suspends his faith in them and questions what he gathers from them, the one who submits to argument and demonstration, and not to the sayings of a human being whose nature is fraught with all kinds of imperfection and deficiency. Thus the duty of the man who investigates the writings of scientists, if learning the truth is his goal, is to make himself an enemy of all that he reads, and, applying his mind to the core and margins of its content, attack it from every side. He should also suspect himself as he performs his critical examination of it, so that he may avoid falling into either prejudice or leniency. Ibn al-Haytham c. 965 - c. 1040

Wasn’t Sigmund Freud’s Oedipus complex theory totally debunked by other psychologists?
@MohamedShou
@MohamedShou 2 жыл бұрын
Yhh many psychologists in recent decades don’t take many of Sigmund Freud’s theories seriously anyway haha. That’s why when they do teach about Sigmund Freud’s theories especially the Oedipus Complex they usually put a caveat to their students by saying “this theory has been debunked” or “this theory doesn’t hold on any weight anymore in the field of psychology”

That’s what I was saying the psychodynamic approach has very little credibility in comparison to all other approaches and was challenged by the majority of psychologists in that era, in the phases of psychology that followed and up until this very day.

How can that be right? How can dismissing the pursuit of valuable knowledge not be permissable? Psycholgists have a key role in society and provide help to the most vulnerable people ie child sex abuse victims, victims of domestic violence. Any muslim who ideologies can be corrupted with just going to university and studying was no muslim to begin with. Munafiq most likely

I don’t have that much idea what they study in psychology but seeing hundreds of documentary , reading books I get some of the picture . Now a days therapist suggest people to do journal , listening to music ( which creates nifaq in heart), doing YouTubing ( problematic for women) to keep patients busy or soothe themselves. Some of my known people are taking treatments with no visible benefits for about 10-15 years. It’s like giving money to doctors just to sleep / become drowsy whole day and when you are awake you are either down or aggressive. It’s like each patient is their sample. If we see west their psychology and evaluation is just to help them get away with anything . You kill someone and you act insane . Voila you are safe. Even doctor will let you have cbd or marijuana.
