@@kevinmorrell4155 Kevin you were very fortunate to be able to see them live. I was 13 years old in 1977. I think it has the best Guitar solos. I know you will enjoy the concert in September.

@@glennallen239Definitely the best guitar solo ever to end the song, 4 guitars jamming. Sounds crazy but I’ve seen them 21 times in 6 States. Twice on NYE, 1976 in Oakland and 2019 in Dallas. I go every time I can and will continue. Something about their music soothes my soul 🤩

There is just something about the soaring guitars (and guitar picking), the piano (etc. instrumentation-wise), and the stories in vocals, all of which which define southern rock as apart from other rock styles - the blending of blues, country and rock into an epic sound which evokes images of bayous, sweeping open country vistas, stands of live oak trees and Spanish moss dangling from the trees, honky-tonk bars, and the open road, which no other music sound could match (not even country itself, which often is about broken relationships). And southern rock is great for long road trips! You guys should definitely do a deeper dive into this amazing band! Every song tells a story! Lynyrd Skynyrd, as the story goes, got their name from a word play of the name of one of the high school teachers of several of the band members who grew up together in the same town: Leonard Skinner. This band always featured at least two guitars, the late Gary Rossington being their lead. But not all of their members died in that plane crash...only (and tragically) lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), the road manager, and the pilots. It happened in Mississippi in a remote swampy location back in October of 1977. There were also twenty survivors of the crash. This put a temporary end to the band until it was reassembled in the late 80s with Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's youngest brother (their middle brother Donnie was one of the founders of another great southern rock band, 38 Special, whose sound leaned slightly more towards a pop-rock blend). I was interning at a rock radio station in Philadelphia, in 1991, when Skynyrd was doing their tour that year to promote a new album. I not only got to meet them (because of my connections with the station), but saw their show at a huge indoor stadium venue (Veterans Stadium I think). They played this song and, the way Johnny explained it when he introduced the song, this was the first road appearance since the plane crash where he was going to sing the lyrics. Prior to that point, they had only ever played it sans vocals, out of respect to the band members and others who lost their lives in the crash. There wasn't a dry eye in the arena...and it was weird seeing the mix of the crowd...bikers, aging fans, college kids like myself, and everything in between...lighters were lit and held high, the crowd was singing along...some people were hugging. Incredible! Johnny sounds JUST like his late brother, and looked a lot like him back then too!

Greetings, the band members who perished in the plane crash on October 20th 1977 were band leader and vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, one of the three guitarists Steve Gaines, and Steve's sister Cassie, who was one of three female backup vocalists. They had three guitarists, a bassist, pianist and drummer.

Their 1st album was called Pronounced Leh nerd Skin nerd and was released in 1973, on the album cover you had 7 guys. Left to Right are Leon Wilkeson bass, Billy Powell piano, Ronnie Van Zant vocals, seated is Gary Rossington guitar, then Bob Burns drums, Allen Collins guitar, and Ed King guitar. By the time of the plane crash on October 20th 1977 Ed King and Bob Burns had left the band and been replaced by Steve Gaines guitar and Artimus Pyle drums. 26 people on board the plane that day including the 2 pilots. 6 died, Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie Gaines who was Steves sister and sang back up vocals. The bands road manager Dean Kilpatrick and both pilots also died. The other 20 were injured, many seriously and needed to be hospitalized for months. Ronnie wrote alot of the lyrics and he was good. Allen Collins wrote that 5+ minute solo when he was still in high school. Lynyrd Skynyrd is clean and always 🔥. Just a bunch of talented musicians out of Jacksonville, Florida. Southern Rock Legends and gone way to soon. Simple Man They Call Me The Breeze Gimme Back My Bullets are a few more good ones. Thanks for the reaction and enjoy the rabbit hole. ✌️

I get tingles to this day every time the guitar solo starts to kick in. The main frontman, Ronnie Van Sant (singing here), during their most prolific era in the 70s, as well as Cassie and Steve Gaines and 3 others died in the 1977 crash -- it forever altered the band, to say the least.

The plane crash was October 1977 and the lead singer died Ronnie Van Zant, one of the 4 guitarists Steve Gaines, his sister died and she was backup singer. All the other members lived but were injured badly and the only reason any lived was the plane run out of fuel so no fire. There were 4 guitarist, lead singer, drummer, pianist, and 3 back up singers. So about 10 members. I saw them three times before the plane crash, yeah I’m 70 years old. The survivors reformed the band in the late 80s and the lead singers brother been singing for Lynyrd Skynyrd last 36 years. The last founding member Gary Rossington (guitar) died in 2021 I think that’s right, all this is from my memory lol.. Lynyrd Skynyrd has a very deep play list including Sweet Home Alabama, Simple man, give me three steps, Tuesday Gone, call me the breeze, and many more!

Ronnie Van Zant the bands leader died on the plane and he was the heart and soul and lead vocals of the band and wrote most lyrics. He could not be replaced. band always had 2 lead guitarists and new member Steve Gaines was a lead guitarist who also wrote lyrics and could sing lead as well. In the song you got that right from last album Steve and Ronnie trade off vocals. like the movie Bohemian Rhapsody which is biography of Freddy Mercury and Queen, Where is the Lynyrd Skynyrd Biography movie? not documentary but a real Movie. with the music and the story to tell and the fans that are still here its a 800 million to 1 billion dollar box office to happen.

Here are some other southern rock bands for you to give a listen to, all of which are playlist worthy: 38 Special Molly Hatchet Blackfoot Grinderswitch The Allman Brothers Band The Outlaws The Marshall Tucker Band Black Oak Arkansas Atlanta Rhythm Section The Charlie Daniels Band The Ozark Mountain Daredevils Wet Willie The Kentucky Headhunters Rossington-Collins Band (formed by several members of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash, with its own distinct sound) Little Feat (really more of a bluesy swamp rock band with some zydeco influences too, being from Louisiana)

Rickey Medlocke has been a guitarist with Skynyrd since 1996 and previously played drums and some lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1971 - 1972 before rejoining his band Blackfoot. Blackfoot has a lot of excellent songs. I actually prefer Blackfoot to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The song “Highway Song” seems to be a favorite of many folks and might be the best place to start listening. It is killer! I’ll put a link below if you’re interested. “Highway Song” by Blackfoot kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpOxo32NnKySaJYsi=IDj3oDk-wWaliXJJ
