Well, sooner or later Greenland or Denmark needs to make a decision. Russia hasn't really been quiet on their crusade to restore the Soviet Union. Having US military base in Greenland makes it so that the US can respond quickly if Russia do plan to go all out against NATO. You know how much Putin hates that union. There's also a posibility for the US to leave NATO, Trump has been hinting it.

I'm both danish and Greenlandic. And I am absolutely horrified by the betrayal of the US. We have fought and bled with the US in almost every major war for the past 30 years, we have literally fought your wars alongside you, and this is how you repay us? I've always known that the US has a tendency to bring "democracy and peace" to countries with resources, but the veil has been lifted now, considering you cannot use this argument against us, and everyone can now see in plain sight what you are all about. Even so, this is a new low. The dead danish soldiers that fought and died alongside the US must be turning in their graves.

@@CaptainMisery86 The way it’s phrased, the debate isn’t an offer; it’s a negotiation with no option to refuse. Trump is essentially claiming the land and openly stating he’ll take it by force if necessary. In case it’s unclear, not everything needs to be exploited for resources. The people of Greenland live happy lives under a government that funds, respects, and supports them. It’s obvious the U.S. wants to turn the island into a massive oilfield or exploit whatever resources they’ve identified there. But no, not everything needs to be sacrificed for imperialistic ambitions. What’s more, Trump’s actions are actively undermining NATO, with his threats to Canada and Greenland being yet another example-and yet, no one seems to care. So yes, it is backstabbing.

The Pittufik Air Base is operated under the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement which governs the U.S. military presence in Greenland. It explicitly acknowledges Denmark retains sovereignty over Greenland and the base, for which the USA pays rent. In unlikely event that the U.S. was requested to vacate Pittufik, the U.S. would likely have to comply under international law and the terms of the Agreement. To do otherwise would be an egregious breach of international law. This is little different from the 1951 US-Japan Agreement for its Okinawa bases (rented), the 1903 US lease of Guantanamo (Cuban sovereignty) or 1966 lease of US base on Diego Garcia in Indian Ocean (British). Generally US presence in Greenland has NOT been kind. For example : in 1894 US Admiral Peary removed a large meteorite from Cape York (PIttufik) which provided the northern Inuit peoples with their only source of tool metal. Some Inuit inhabitants were also seized and taken to the U.S. for anthropological and ethnographic purposes and to be exhibited at the 1893 Chicago Worlds fair. After 1951 and establishment of the Pittufik(Thule) base, the US - contrary to Danish law - secretly stationed nuclear weapons under the ice; a discovery only made in 1968 when a B-52 crashed in Greenland scattering 4 radioactive weapons there. Three of the four bombs were successfully recovered, and the widespread radioactive contamination largely removed, but the fourth bomb remains and has never been found. The US military's relationship with indigenous groups (here Inuit) has - no suprise - lead to disputes more recently.

Remember that for Americans, Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rico have been nothing more than a crude COLONY since 1898 without the right to vote, nor senators naither representatives with seats in the Congress of Washington. Finally, remember the horrendous and tragic fate of Puerto Rico: from an autonomous region as part of Spain in 1897 to a brutal colony under the US in 1898 and then renamed since 1952 as a "Free (they were forced) Associated State (they are actually chained to the US as its colony)" to hide the ugly truth from the UN decolonization committee: Puerto Rico is still a colony in 2025!

My concern is that average people in Greenland will see dollars and will be to eager to sell it if the price is right... So much that Russia did with Alaska back in the day. It will be a huge mistake and maybe Greenland needs to learn from Russia, as they regretted it ever since. Also thinking about minerals in Greenland, with initiatives like "Drill baby, drill", soon you be able to excavate miners there with just a regular equipment as there is no sight of slowing down in global warming... so Greenlanders might as well wait a bit and then get all the riches to themselves. Finally, if the US choose a military takeover it will be safe to say that Russia was ALSO just defending their strategic situation in Ukraine... so even though we all know that it is a world of double standards and different rules for ones and others, but I really want to believe in Unity of NATO and EU to never allow this to happen!
