To answer your philosophical question: Becoming “bigger” is considered a failstate by the rules of the run. Letting go of crouch, eating a mushroom, were these instances to occur you would reset the run/level. The conflict presented only really comes about because of how you’ve framed the purpose of the run: to beat the game as small as possible, which leaves room to interpret the goal as “average time spent small throughout the run,” rather than the more typical “avoiding ever becoming big” conceit that most challenge runs would follow. The fact that becoming bigger than your beginning state is never required throughout the run if you take the desert path means that there’s never a point in which you have to intentionally invoke a failstate, which seems truer to the style of run. Think about it in the context of other challenge runs: In coiness, it pays to bite the bullet by collecting coins now to save coins later, because the end goal of the run is a cumulatively low score of coins overall, while in a damageless run, the individual instances in which the player takes damage are failstates, and since damage is never required to be taken, there’s no reason to take it intentionally. It really depends on what kind of challenge run you want this to be. I personally agree most with the path you’ve taken, being the desert path. It’s treated more as a “failstate run,” rather than a “cumulative score” run.

One thing I really like about Ceave when he does these challenge videos is how he presents the challenge and when hiccups occur during a run. As much as I love the challenge runs done by Nicobbq and Nathaniel Bandy, they just don't compare. When one of them hits a dead end, it's just "It's not possible to beat this game using this method, but let's see how many levels we can do". When Ceave hits a dead end, he starts contemplating the meaning of life and if it's worth it to put Mario through more of this challenge.

Here is how i would solve the dilemma: Check how much bigger Mario is when swimming, complete the level as fast as possible and multiply the time it took by the increased-bigness-factor. Compare that to the time it takes to complete the route to the desert mini-mushroom. Taking the route with the over all lowest time will have the least big mario per time spent, giving you the lowest average in height for your run.

I believe I have a mathematical solution to Ceave’s philosophical dilemma near the beginning of the video. Firstly, if we look at the individual level speed runs for all the levels Ceave would have to complete after 1-2 (aka from the world one fortress to the world one castle) it would take 275 second to complete. And if we compare that to the secret level, that only takes 74 seconds. Now if we take those times and convert them into frames using this game 60fps we can find that completing all of world one would take 16,500 frames, and completing the secret level would take 4,440 frames. Secondly, if we look at the infographic Ceave provided, we can see that swimming Mario is around 22.22% bigger then crouching Mario. With this information we can take 22.22% of 4,440 (986.65) and add it to the total making 5,426.65 total bigness frames, as compared to the 16,500 of going the other route. So therefore I believe taking the secret route would lead to a lesser total amount of bigness. The only disparity I can see here is that Ceave can’t play at world record pace while crouching, but that only proves my point further. So hopefully I fully explained my thought process, and if there’s any reason you think I’m wrong, please let me know.

The route that goes through the water level would be smaller, because of this: If you attach a value to crouching, say 0.5, and crouch through 7 levels, you get a value of 3.5. If you crouch through 3 levels and swim through 1, you get a value of 2.5. 2.5 is smaller than 3.5, therefore water level route is smaller. because he is approximately 25% bigger when you are swimming, that means that he should spend 4 times the amount of time going through the desert to get out as the water, but it takes 3 levels to get through the water and 7 levels through the desert 7 is not 4 times 3 or greater so going through the water is better because although the average size is increased, the TOTAL size is smaller

The "is it smaller or bigger?" dilemma can be solved by just going te sand world way, getting a mini mushroom, and redoing the levels as the start of the run. BUT, then this also raises another dilemma. Is this cheating or not? Cause i don't know. It just feels wrong to do that, but it's technically fair game? It feels like it's cheating, but we didn't really specify wether or not it should be played as a fresh new save, but (assuming i didn't miss anything [also super boring solution i know, but what can you do]) this is my solution.

The challenge is badly worded at its core, because "What is the smallest way to beat the game ?" assumes there exists a minimum size, namely a path for which the size function s is such that for any other path's size function f, at all times t, p(t) < f(t). That's not a guarantee. I can find a dozen families of functions such that the first one in each family is always smaller than the rest of the families AND the other families, except the first one where there is no order relation. There's no minimal function. On the other hand, size multiplied by time, or the integral under the size function, has a minima. Calculate the total number of pixels mario occupies as a measure of how big he is, multiply by time spent in a state, and you have a number representing how big mario is. But we don't really need to compute that: one stage swimming is way better than 3 stages crouching.

Dilemma solved: Look at both paths. In one, there's a max height of one crouching Mario in every level. The max height for the first path is seven crouching Marios stacked on top of each other. On the second path, it's two crouching Marios and one swimming Mario stacked for its max height. The secret exit is the better path. But wait! If I'm counting your max height as all Marios stacked on top of each other, then I'm about this all wrong. If I woke up the next day the same height I am now, my height wouldn't have doubled. It's a constant height going forwards. That means the max height for the first route is only one crouching Mario, while the max height for the second route is a swimming Mario! You want to be as small as possible, so swimming would break your ability to. It doesn't matter if you stay crouching seven times in a row, because it's constant, and a constant crouch is better than swimming because it's still smaller! BUT WAIT! In the flag animation, Mario walks. It would be unfair to count that as his max height, because it's out of the player's control, but it doesn't change the fact that the first route isn't constant, so Mario re-crouches for every level, meaning that my first argument was correct! BUT WAIT. Seven Marios stacked on top of eachother never was Mario's max height, because it still was the same Mario. The first path is better. BUUUUUT WAIT!! If the walking animation never counts, than is Mario in a constant crouch? If we say he's not, than we should count the walking. If the walking is being counted now, than it only matters about how many levels Mario goes through since his max height is always the same for every level! The second path is the best! BUT WAAAAIT! If we counted the walking, then it renders the challenge obsolete! We shouldn't count the walking for practicality. That means the crouch should be constant, so Mario's max height is one crouching Mario on the first path, which is smaller than the swimming Mario. BUUUUUT WAAAAIIIIIT! This question has no answer. Aristotle is rolling in his grave.

The way I see the solution to the dilemma is this: so swimming Mario is a little bigger than crouched right? But only by a small amount, let's say swimming is 1/5 bigger (if you were to be making a KZbin video you would probably find out using the pixels the exact ratio) and then how much smaller mini crouch Mario is than regular Mario crouched, let's say 1/4 of the size, and then weigh up the fact you have 4 stages more without mini if you go to world 2 - using my guesses, 1 stage of underwater plus 3 stages of mini has a weight of 6/5 + 3/4. 4 stages of regular crouch has a weighting of 4 (since you're size is effectively 1, 4 times) so the swimming shortcut is actually quite a lot better. That is unless it forces you into more swimming levels later on, and then you'd have to weigh up mini swimming Mario Vs mini crouched but it's just more fractional weighting to figure out.
