Only 3 mins in so hopefully you figured it out later but the idea to prioritise the length over the base at **ALL** costs is false. While the exponent is important you get to a point where increasing base by 1 is more effective than increaseing the length by 1. Earliest example is 2^3=8, 3^2=9

You should read about asymmetric encryption, which is one way to make a lock unguessable, even by cheating. More concretely, it's possible to generate 3SAT problem instances having a unique solution, and which is known by the person generating the problem (but then guessing the solution becomes exponentially hard).

I feel like the ability to release updates and patches is what's slowly making gaming less fun. You have two groups of gaming companies, the people who'll release a game that's clearly unfinished with the hopes of fixing it later (usually doesn't happen) or the companies like Nintendo that put out perfectly fine games with one or two minor bugs, and actively try to remove them.

regarding the whole “nintendo doesn’t want us making our own experiences” bit It is their game, if they want to force the player to play it a certain way, that’s their choice what they *can’t* do is make you have fun

meanwhile sonic teams out here acknowledgin glitches like these, probably most obviously in sonic frontiers, where certain glitches in cyberspace levels will add a tiny icon by the time to signify “this run included this specific unintended glitch, cool right?”

Neither side of the lock is 'more important than the other'. Rather, math favors both being as close in number to each other as possible. If we inverted the situation with the bike lock, you would see the same logic favor making the base higher.

This shows very much Nintendos mentality on needing to have an absolute monopoly and control over anything they do or make They can't for the life of them let go of their ego/pride for the better of their playerbase

I can't stand locales where dot is used as a thousands separator, it should be a decimal separator :( And perfect thousands separator for me would be narrow no-break space, but alas no locale uses that. ISO recommends simply space

It was changed to a separate button to enable scratching in the air which is important and used by thousands upon thusands of levels, to break blocks or activate them. The rest of the video honestly is just bitching.

My favorite glitch I’ve ever seen in a game is in psychonauts 2, wherein speed runners figured out how to use the telekinesis power to fly around. It was super difficult and I myself have tried several times and it’s definitely something that requires insane amounts of practice and control to pull off. You know what the creators (double fine) did when they saw it when doing a video reacting to a speed run (with the speed runner in the call explaining the cool things they were doing and how they did it)? They went ‘that’s super cool, I didn’t know you could do that, but that’s like a fun mechanic for speed runners to try and master to make their runs shorter and shorter. That’s epic.’* and they let the mechanic be. They even talked about how it can be fun to have things in there that the devoted fans/speed runners would find or use but that wouldn’t interfere with the gameplay for the average player. *not the direct quote, but the gist of it.

I've found this video essay particularly inspiring for my own level design for years now. I always come back to this, and it somehow never fails to motivate me and get me unstuck from my 'level designer's block', if that qualifies as a term in the English language. So thank you, Ceave. I cannot fully express my gratitude to you in its entirety, but may it be a stepping stone to that eventual understanding.

I notice people mentioning in the comments that Miyamoto on multiple occasions has discussed leaving in glitches and exploits that didn't affect casual play. I point this out to you all: Miyamoto is stepping away from control of his franchises. As the general shift in mangement happens at Nintendo, not only do the old-fashioned-isms of Nintendo get faded out, but also some more positive aspects, and this is merely the result in change.

Art (especially interactive art like gaming) is by nature collaborative with the viewers of the art once the art has entered the public. The viewer (in this case the collective millions that play these games) will ALWAYS interpret and interact with the art in their own way. Once the art is experienced by the public the nature and interpretation of the art are out of control of the creator. All Nintendo is doing is trying to control how people experience their art AFTER the art has been released, it's futile for them but they can't accept that the experience a player has is out of their control.

The Cat Suit issue reminds me of the Zora Link problems in Majora's Mask - not one person played either of those games and thought "if only this was simplified". I completed the original MM at the age of 12 - there is absolutely no need to hold players' hand with these games 💕

There is a way to make an unbreakable combination lock even if your "opponent" is using mods, hacks, or anything else. Here is how to do it: A hash function is a function that turns one number into another, but it's easy to do one way, but hard to do in reverse. So `x = hash(123)` is easy to solve, but `hash(x) = 456` is near impossible. Your level basicly preforms if (input == 1234) { open_door() } But, if someone opens it with a mod, thhey can see the number `1234` in the "source code". The way to solve it is to change the level to work more like this: if (hash(input) == hash(1234)) { open_door() } This works the same, but is slightly less secure, because there is a chance that two different numbers produce the same hash. But `hash(1234)` is always the same number, so we can just precompute it: Let's say that `hash(1234)` is 53859029. Then you could replace your program with: if (hash(input) == 53859029) { open_door() } That program doesn't contain `1234` at all, so it's unbrakable even by modding/hacking. Making that in Mario Maker would require to build a calculator that computes a secure hash function, such as SHA-256, but it would be unbreakable, unless you have a quantum computer. If you have any questions, ask them in the replies.

um...is this it? how this doesnt lead to a complete super mario maker 2 revolution, if I could make those levels at the end, all you need to do is change the lock a little bit evvery time, you can make like a 1000 levels with unique code (and if you use auto making algorith maybe millions) and release them, it doesnt have glitches, they are ''easily'' beaten by the player, no need to change versions etc, this is the most groundbraking video i have watched about super mario maker 2 and somehow its just another video? nothing giant happening? im confused, is this because of honour and love to the game or something
