i have a standard acoustic ovation with low B 0.64 and regular strings down to B (0.16) tensiion is ok, sounds beautiful, good action, easy to transpose songs or simply using capo. Sounds better when strings are clean.
@hankcentral64383 жыл бұрын
The great thing with a baritone acoustic as a singer is that it will immediately transpose a song into a more easily singable key without having to rework the chords. A lot of the times transposing the chords down 5 steps (example G down to D) can push them into a higher sounding register and lose the bottom end that you want when doing a solo gig. Using a capo can often make a song sound too much like a mandolin. You get that low end you want with the baritone plus often particular riffs sound "better" when played in the original shapes than if you transpose them. I prefer thinking of them as heavier versions of the original songs. As you say, you do have to make creative decisions though to avoid making a song sound muddy on the lower 2 strings. My trick for strumming is to play the bottom 2 strings with my thumb and rake the higher 4 with my first finger. An open E shape will sound terrible. An E played at the A string 7th fret will give you low E bass and high E guitar sound you want. So basically, you still need to make changes to your playing style but I think the pros definitely outweigh the cons as a solo performer looking for a fuller sound.
@GreenhamGuitar3 жыл бұрын
This is some solid advice, thanks! I play the similarly, with thumb and index. Because of a lifetime of using the BOSS OC-3 octave pedal, I have always avoided playing E and A together... so this could be a natural next step for me.

I see a lotta people disagreeing with muddy along with me. Baritone compositions do entail a more slow fingerstyle approach, he seems to be conveying that. I loved the rhythm with which he plays these songs slowly.

It's no different then tuning down only a little lower. Capo the fifth fret and you're back in e standard. It's just a guitar plus some more guitar.

Try and tune your guitar down a fifth and see how it sounds. You need the extra scale length for the tension. Anything below like C# on a standard guitar sounds awful.

First heard a Taylor Baritone at a show by the late great Kelly Joe Phelps(may he RIP) and fell in love with the sound he got out of the guitar. That night was some of the most beautiful guitar accompaniment I have ever heard. Been thinking of getting a baritone so need to do some research. I do a lot of fingerstyle accompaniment and the baritone would contrast my higher voice. I think it'd be a lot of fun. And I can write some really dark shit too! Lol!

The Faith baritone is genuinely lovely: I’ve John gommme’s signature strings on it and I can comfortably swap between a 5th and a 3rd down from standard/ all the open tuning in between! I’ve also had standard Guage on it to see if works for standard, and it truly does!

What is this guy on about ? I came here to learn the basics of better incroporating the low B into my playing, and i’m a newbie. But I can still tell you that if you tune to BEADGB, You can play from the low E string down like a normal guitar with normal chord shapes, and if you tune BEADF# B you can play across the whole guitar with normal chord shapes. There’s always a capo, Then there’s drop D and Drop A. I’m not sure why he is limiting his thinking of the instrument in this way..

@@MikaelLewisify About 15 years ago, I started playing bass in a blues / classic rock cover band. The guitar player was unreal... played Hendrix, SRV, Johnnie Winters, et al, straight up. Anyways, one day he told me to tune down to D, because he liked the tone and it helped him sing easier. I used to open our shows with an acoustic set, so to keep the same “sound” in my ears, I tuned my guitar down as well. Loved it! Played 40 years in E, but since that day, stay in D. I strum hard, so don’t like the loose strings. Looking forward to the 27” baritone scale tuned to D. Keep pickin’!
