British grain here! We call them interchangably: 'pennies' (usually for describing physical coins), 'pence' if using it in conjunction with a total amount as in 'twenty four pounds thirty seven pence' or, sometimes, just 'p' (pronounced 'pea') usually used if something costs under a pound (or 'quid') for example: 'that'll be 40p please'. That was honestly the most thought I've ever put into currency and how weird our language is.

That's nothing! Here in Canada, our $1 and $2 coins are literally, and legitimately called a Loonie and Toonie. When my fiance immigrated to Canada, from the US, he thought people were pulling his leg when they told him the names of our higher end, coin currency.
