This comment is so ridiculously unintelligent that it's painful. The very definition of sensationalist alarmism above, ladies and gentlemen. What on earth would farm murders have to do with Cape Town? The affected farms were, in general, very far from Cape Town city bowl, and not at all indicative of the experience to expect within Cape Town. It's akin to talking about New York by referring to Jersey City crime statistics. Please understand the political underpinnings of the comment above. This type of rhetoric is associated with a particular (ridiculous) political ideology that posits that South Africa is 'reverse racist' and that whites are in some way targeted (despite the actual balance of resources in the country being precisely the opposite). This ideology is would be the 'Trump supporter' of South Africa.

And before you bs me and call me white, I'm full middle eastern and live in a small racist white town, but I can also be racist towards them. Don't act smart when you don't even know that. Cape Town is generally safe for tourists especially in the popular beach/residential areas. Walking around during the day is quite safe. I have lived in Cape Town for 10 years and nothing has ever happened to me when I have been walking. Just don’t flash your expensive items as someone may mugg you. However I don’t recommend walking at night unless you have no choice to as there is an increased risk of something happening to you. Even though the murder rate is very high in Cape Town, most of the murders take place in the townships and not the suburbs, so it is very unlikely you will get murdered or attacked if you stay away from those areas.

The minority white population have a much higher average standard of living and tend to live apart from the general population because although all races are theoretically equal it is overwhelmingly not fiscally feasible for them to purchase in the more preferred areas creating visible disparity and segregation. The issues in South Africa are complex. First, we have a government that is more interested in enriching the members of the ruling ANC while the sizeable working-class majority live in dire poverty. This poverty and desperation, caused largely by corruption and unemployment (literally the highest in the world at 29%), ultimately aggravate the crime rates here. I love South Africa, it is the home of my heart, no matter where I might be, but I fear it will take a long time before the people of this country finally vote the ANC out of power. Pretty much the main places. Like table mountain some of the main beaches as long as u keep ur valuables out of site coz they're public not private beaches. I wouldnt bother with the rainbow houses coz besides seeing them theres bot much to do and there's many places and stuff to do that will take some time either thru driving there or is just a lot to do and looking at some funky colored houses but u can drive right by them to see them and move on. Most tourist places take steps to keep it safe coz the city relies on tourist revenue. Just keep that in mind. Even people who live in lower income areas or are poorer or in areas that aren't as safe take transportation to get to these main areas to work in hospitality etc. It's people's livelihoods to be a part of the tourist industry. Johannesburg is different its built to be a higher paying job area for people in corporate etc. Tourist stuff there is mostly going to Kruger and similar places where u might stay in a lodge in "safari" vibes where there's just the lodge it's staff guests and nearby or roaming animals. A lot of tourists once they see its not exactly like the stereotype of Africa all mud huts and aids they lose their sense completely thinking its either that stereotype or exactly like their home which isn't true. Just coz it's not all loincloth and clickey language doesn't mean u don't do ur due diligence, which a tourist might make the mistake. Then, after they don't do due diligence, start talking about the crime. All because they didn't put nuance into their thinking, only thinking of one extreme or the other. Just keep that in mind. I live there and I've never been mugged but I don't go many places after dark there's really no need. It's easier if ur going home from an event like a sports match orgoing to the store and driving in general is always a yes for safety and not walkable distances. To generalize:Do ur diligence, don't think only in extremes, stick to main tourist places, do a bit of research, and stick to day stuff which is most stuff especially if ur part of a family. South Africans love sharing our culture to foreigners even outside the country. My mom visiting Orlando wants to make pap for our yank friends. And u can ask hospitality staff they'll be completely overthe moon to tell u tips on food fun activities and just talk.

@@Stayyyysilent I got back home yesterday from a 2 week trip in cape town and garden route, you need to know how to move around there. It was a wonderful place and I absolutely loved the views and there are a lot of really kind people there. Being respectful, not travelling by anything other than rental car or uber (until about like 9pm) and overall just not acting like a dumb ass tourist will get you very far. However if you are still scared places like Knysna are very safe and amazing as well to visit. Garden route is absolutely lovely and the feeling of safety was nearly always there for me.

And yes, avoid certain areas (!), but over all as a tourist Cape Town is super safe during the day.

I will never say never, but we have travelled from the UK to SA every year, for the last 20 years, we have never been the victims of crime. Funnily, I would say I felt more alarmed about my safety in Detroit, than Cape Town. Better to never visit countries or cities that don't handle the crime problems. In the end they would be forced to get rid of the problems. Tourists that go there anyway seem to accept how it is and nourish the ruling politics and the ways things are, they will remain the same and is only getting worse.. Passive protest is the best medicine. Don't go there period.

My three days experience in Cape Town; Witnessed a robbery in downdown middle of the day at an ATM, followed by a gang at Waterfront during evening, a security guard calmed the situation down.. to then be attacked by an aggressive taxi driver which threatened to shoot the guard too. I'd say all places in that city become sketchy as soon as it's dark. We got to learn a nice taxi driver and he just told us to not move outside after like 9PM. I liked the mountain and all, and some areas in the town, like some large park with tame squirrels etc, but this crime issue is way too large.

Most Westerners are used to? This comment is odd to me given the large number of sketchy places in Western countries. I'm curious is the East side of Chicago safe? Or South Central LA? How about a whole bunch of places in the US deep South or Detroit? Are these places safe and non sketchy for the average person to walk around? Now I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "westerners" because that's such a broad term and it's often not clear who is being referred to. Does it include Americans? Because I would think lots of Americans are used to crime in certain parts of their country. Or how about the Swedes who have the highest gun crime and rape rates in Europe? How about Londoners with the knife 🔪 crimes and acid attacks that have happened a lot over the recent past. Are these westerners? Is Cape Town safe? No. As a Capetonian I would say no. But I do just find that statement weird.

Started off promising but failed with the overall message and narrative of the vlog. Cape Town isn’t as dangerous as what you make it out to be (as long as you avoid certain areas ie CERTAIN (not all areas). I am truly sorry for what happened to your friend in Long Street. My guess is that he simply presented himself as an easy target (a mistake all of us have done at least momentarily when visiting a new country for the first time)…or the person who robbed you was drugged-up and unhinged which often is the case with these homeless street-beggars, common to that part of town (doesn’t make it any less dangerous for you guys, I’d agree) Regarding your local friend who takes all those precautions when driving or going to sleep at night…I guess it’s not a bad idea for anyone to take these precautionary measures but I can assure you that it’s a small percentage of people that lives this way. (The driving precautions she practices as a female i can fully get behind as it’s common sense however sleeping with a knife under a pillow is definitely not the norm) I have travelled to many countries around the world and am the first to say that there are many many countries and cities that just gives off that immediate feeling of being safe (CT is not one of them but at the same time, it doesn’t at all scream DANGER)…most countries I’ve been to you can walk around late at night, some even at 2 or 3am alone feeling completely safe. So if that’s your bench mark then yeah, CT is nowhere near as safe to anything you’ll come across in some other countries. Maybe because I grew up my entire life in CT, I’m being a little unfair and biased as I hardly ever feel unsafe when going about my daily routine, be it during the day or when driving late on the roads at night. Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware of the dangers that CT presents and which parts to avoid etc definitely not being naive. Perhaps that is true for any local in any city around the world - you’d probably get a similar answer from the locals living in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore or Atlanta. Perhaps also why I find Rio de Janeiro to be home away from home for me because of all that danger (sketchiness as you put it) For me that makes the city that much more alive and exciting. For the record, Rio is definitely not one of those cities one can walk alone at 2am at night unless if you’re out partying in Centro (downtown) but that’s a whole nother level of sketchiness 😂 but I love it nonetheless. It’s unfortunate this seems to be everyone’s view on the topic of safety regarding Cape Town - I do hope you come back and give CT another chance someday. Ps: to truly get a better understanding of your question….ask 10 people and you’ll easily get 10 different responses on whether or not CT is safe for tourists.
