If I had an antique cake stand that contained lead, I would still want to use it as well. I would trim a piece of parchment to size, and then for looks, use a lacy paper doily on the parchment to disguise it. Great video as always, and your sweet kitty is lovely.

Been using some items since the early 1900s my nan used kept family’s kitchen items. And I’ve used them as they were passed down and just around. I never thought of it. Hasn’t killed me or anyone else yet.

As I know vintage is anything more then 20 years ago. I guess my whole house is vintage. Antique is something I think more then 100 years old but also is collectible. I love German knifes. Solingen is the company which makes them and they stay sharp all the time.

At 65 I've forever been an old soul and would have preferred living in pioneer times LOL I grew up with antiques (anything 100 years or older) in our home being used daily and because I was born in the 50's I inherited my modern relatives vintage item (anything 50 years to 99) and I use them all on a daily basis except the crocks. I love your herb chopper because of the double blades and when I spot one I'll add it to my kitchen items. Thanks for sharing!

I read an article where they were thinking of enclosing in heavily leaded glass the waste nuclear fuel. It would keep them solid and from leaching out into the environment. If leaded glass can keep something so toxic, I think it can keep contained inside the glaze on my pans, while I use them a few times of a year. Yes I know it is not the same thing, but it is similar. If you soak your acidic tomatoes in your enamel pan for a week, ok, a little bad chemicals and metals may leach out, but for an hour or two that you are cooking with them, I hardly think it matters. How much pollution do we breathe in, during the day? Isn't our indoor air in our homes, like 10 times a polluted than the outside air?

Hallo Anja, so schöne Dinge hast du uns da gezeigt :) DANKE!

The crock has no glaze on rim or bottom to prevent sticking in the kiln. If the glaze is ‘bumpy’ rather than glassy, grey or brown, it is salt glazed, and safe for food.

I'm 63 and my grandmother, who was born sometime around the turn of the century (1900ish) had her grandmother's cast iron dutch oven. I unfortunately did not inherit it. But it must have been from the 1870's or 1880's, I'm guessing.

Your nose can also help with wooden items; sometimes they have held items that are not food safe. Oily substsnces (especially motor-type oils) often are not safe, so if there are dark oil stains that have an unusual smell, best to use them for non-food purposes. Our cat has a dough bowl she sleeps in!

Test it for lead. Box stores carry lead stick tests, and they are cheap. Also, test your antique cast iron for lead because people used to use them to make bullets.

I use mine all the time. So sometimes on the 'get hot' type appliance, the whole appliance gets hot, the inside, outside, tops, sides.......you just have to learn how to not touch the hot metal body and parts. If you do, you get a burn. I have a very nice 'American Beauty' clothes iron, it has a huge sole plate. It took quite a bit of use, for me to train my brain not to brush my knuckles across the top from holding the handle, and I've burned myself more than a few times on the very tip of the iron. But now, I can use it mostly burn free. ha ha ha. I do not use antique hair dryers as I did read they were full of asbestos and can blow asbestos particles into your face. But all the rest of my appliances, if they have good electrical cords, I use them.

Copper pots are not coated with tin, they are "tinned" with zink. This is a fairly easy process that you (or your husband) might want to look into as a diy project. The purpose of the "tinning" is to make it easier to use with acidic foods. Exposed copper is safe to use as long as it is not used with acidic foods. Lead glass, as another has said, use a paper or cloth doily. Tin Boxes? Line them with paper. Solingen is where I bought my non-stainless paring knives from. Love them!

As for the copperpot: I know there are still tin foundries in Belgium and even more in France. I would bring it if you ever go on a holiday to Normandie for example. Other than boiling eggs you could -although a saucepan is usually not the best choice- try to whip eggwhites since that goes extremely well in combination with copper. But whatever you do, never use a tin pot on high heat since tin will wear off so much quicker.

Hallo Anja, thank you for sharing this. It has never come to my mind that the heirloom items I use could be hazardous to my health but of course they might be ! Those stoneware containers ( Gurkentöpfe to me ) might contain lead of course but I've never thought of that. Well, they look beautiful with big wild flower bouquets in them so they are not useless after all. It's funny to see we come from the same cultural background with "good Sunday silverware and china" and the "everyday silverware and china" ( the Sunday stuff having to be cleaned by hand because of the gold ornaments ). I have to admit though that I got rid of all that when I started to live a single life and reduced my household to one convenient set for all occasions starting 'death cleaning'.

I think it's ok to use an old/vintage kitchen items. If there not made of some sort of metal or fiber wear. There be ok. They will also last longer if you take good care of them. Don't use to much of high heat, the size of the pan should be what the flame under the pan size.😊

MANY PEOPLE HAVE BED CHAMBER POTS & do not know they were porta potties when there was no inside toilet even in 1900s and easily back to 1600s. Poor may have just used a wood bucket. AH the good old days. They were often fired in kiln and seem to fragile to sit on >???? Look like a giant squatty tea cup.

The cat may knock over some of your antiques. I don't think it's a good idea to store salt in a metal container because of corrosion. I would use all the items except the wooden ones that could accumulate smells while in storage.
