Is it Safe to Wing Foil in the Middle of Nuking San Francisco Bay?

Wind was 30+, big bumps, far from land, fast huge ships, fog, definitely super fun, is this safe? What skills, experience, safety gear does one need?

I am still a noob at wing foiling (proficient at prone) and it gives me anxiety every time I go out. I think of where I may end up downwind, a shipping lane, a stretch of rocky shore, blown out too far to paddle back in, etc... There are so many variables to consider. Yes, thanks for the reminders to be safe!

Cool video, hey,your stance look unusual, is there a reason for the way you prefer to ride like you do?

Thanks. My winging stance changes, and I move my feet a lot. I came to that recently when going upwind really leaned over and hooked in it feels more secure when I get hit with a strong gust or lull. I am tall with big feet, so maybe having more leverage lets me ride differently. My surf stance is completely different.

In the month of august the wind seems to shut off for no apparent reason to us humans on the water. Time of the year to be cautious.

I punctured my 2.5m wing the other day in wild conditions. Front wings and stabs getting sharper and sharper sadly. I swam for an hour to shore. Luckily it was the hottest day of the year. But it made me think about self rescue gear. Would you consider a foldable mini paddle on the back? I've seen some of the Japanese wing foilers carrying those.

I hear you. I tried a 3 pc sup paddle and now my wing board is to small to sup, so I'm resigned to prone paddling. The packable mini-kite might be an option, or rope and tent pole to rig a popped wing into a sail...
