The 75g I got used 20 yrs ago just started leaking earlier this year, I bought a new one to replace it for half price at Petco - The manufacture date on the old one was from the 90s, I'd say I got a great deal and 20+ years of use for a used tank was definitely worth it - thanks John 💕👍

I am currently running a 75g that I bought in the early 1980s, it was left out in Ohio weather for over 12 years and it is working perfectly. I took it down and set it outside when we remodeled the house and just got around to setting it back up 2 years ago. Got a couple of scratches on the glass but nothing bad.

@Michael Clark, that's awesome!! I still have my leaky one, may reseal it and put it back together someday - these older tanks have thicker glass than the newer ones🤗

Over half of my aquariums in my fish room, from 75s to 240gallons have all worked greatly. Checking the seals/ silicone is always my biggest check. As long as those look good and the bracing has no cracks, 90% of the time or greater, the tank should work like a dream. Best of luck to all who are out looking for some great used tank deals now. :)

my issue with the used market is mainly how dirty tanks are on the secondary market, youll see tanks where the glass is brown and to me the time it would take to clean it is more valuable then the money id be paying buying a brand new tank

Just bought a used 55 gal for 200$ - came with EVERYTHING, stand, heater, filter, light, PLUS he threw in tons of rocks, some caribsea sand, and several fish. What a deal! Last year someone listed about 20 aquariums for free - curbside pick up. By the time I got there there were only 5 10 gal and one 55. I took all but one of the 10 gal tanks, and the 55. Got home, and only one of the 10s leaked… so I resealed it. The 55 turned out to be in really bad shape though, so we tossed it out. But hey, FREE, and those four tanks now house my beautiful bettas!

About a year and half ago my wife happened upon a local garage sale. She called me up and said the guy was selling an aquarium. Went to check it out and found that it was a 75 gallon oceanic in excellent condition. Purchased the tank and stand for a hundred bucks.

Agreed. For larger tanks absolutely worth it. In 30yrs I've had 1-2 tanks develop slow leaks. If they do, resealing a tank is super easy, as long as the glass isn't damaged.

My husband bought a used aquarium on Craigslist at the beginning of this year. It's a 55 gallon and came with a cabinet stand, decorations, lids, gravel, 2 filters, 2 heaters, and a light. I'm pretty sure he paid $235. It has been great.

I bought a secondhand 75 gallon aquarium to put Mbuna in last September. I got the tank, cabinet, heater, light, internal filter, sand and some rocks with it all for £200 and I’ve had no problems at all with it. I’ve since upgraded the light and bought an external canister filter and I’m well happy with it. The guy I bought it from had only just emptied it as he upgraded to a 240 gallon so I knew pretty much that it wasn’t gonna leak. Love you guys by the way been watching you for nearly 2 years now and love watching your content. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this!! All of my aquariums, but ONE are used. Not gonna lie, it freaks me out! BUT (I know, the grammar lol), after reading and learning about the seals, even I feel as if I could reseal a tank if needed, the sides that is lol. Just gotta take your time. Maybe practice a little. The fear of things really is worse than actuality. Human brains, gotta love em! SO many I have learned are willing to help out in a time of crisis. Oh the fish community, the non jerks of course, some AWESOME people!! Loving it!! Seeing previous clips is always a treat too! Hooked guys! Chomping at the bit (what an AWFUL saying lol) to shop your store and actually purchase! More and more praise is coming! I say some weird stuff too, heads up. Been raising kids for years, a lot of kid in me still lol Just so darn appreciative of those that I've found on here! Between OFR, King of DIY, and you guys, EVERYTHING is covered plus some! Gotta have the time to keep up with videos, so not going ALL crazy lol SO excited to have found another group that is just so wonderful and fun, caring and sweet, but most of all honest!! We gotta stay in reality, it's easy to expect the sugar coated everything when viewing edited/filtered/staged EVERYTHING online.....this getting older thing lol Well Thank You if you made it through ALL of THAT! No worries if not! Get REALLY excited about anything aquatic. Getting to share it os the best! 💙💚 Take care guys and safe travels!! Hugs! Thank you again!! 💌

We have had about 6 different tanks now. 5 all second hand. No dramas plus we got some really good gear thrown in with a few of them. Like perfectly good filters, hoses, pumps etc that saved us a fortune. Some people just start the hobby and don't last very long so they throw the gear in just to rid themselves of it all.

All I have is used tanks and old used canister filters! Two 10s, one 20, one 30, and a 72 bowfront. $350 total investment for tanks. I used KG tropicals for lights, filters, and heaters for the 10s and 20, and boom, I have 5 tanks running in my office. I leak checked all of them outside on the back porch for a few days before filling them inside. I would definitely recommend doing that.

I bought a brand new Boyu acrylic tank and it cracked from bottom to top 10 months after. I was just grateful I was near by and heard the gushing water so I could save my angels. I was told by the retailer that that's what happens with a lot now due to cost cutting. Sooo... I bought a second hand decent quality tank, resealed it and two years later... I'm a happy bunny.

I was looking at getting back into the hobby after several years out of it. Wanted a nice 'big' tank (previously the largest tank I'd had was an AquaOne AR620). Saw a 4ft tank for $21NZD (about $13USD).......THAT was too good to pass up. Nevermind I need/ed to reseal it and give it a bit of a clean! Was so surprised it actually sold for $21 and the bidding didn't go higher tbh.

I picked up a 220 Oceanic Aquariums glass tank earlier this year. It was used as a salt water aquarium. There’s some buildup, etching, and scratches in it. My plan was to polish the glass and set it up. It’s made from 1/2” tempered glass and using a 7” rotary, coarse microfiber buffing pad and 3M glass polish made no difference on the scratches. Buffing got rid of the haze, but that’s it. So I stripped out the old sealing caulk, resealed it, painted the trim, and it’s sitting in my garage curing. Next weekend I’ll have 3 guys come over and help me move it to the basement. Oh yea, I got it with the original OA stand, but wasn’t feeling the particle board construction. So I built a 41” tall 2x4 stand wrapped in 1/2” maple plywood to put it on.

Most of my large aquariums are secondhand and I have not had any issues with them, and I’ve Gotta be honest i’ve travelled to see them full before they’ve been emptied. But ended on agreeing to take FishThe 150 I got was amazing deal with a FX6 with all new media and bits and pieces. It was a older tank I got be honest I should of done of reseal before using. It wasn’t leaking but The seal looked like It could’ve done with it. I knew the person I got it from and it had never leaked, and it had been moved loads in his house to other homes I helped move it many of times. It was the tank closest to the garage door which was replaced with a insulated one. There was a lot of movement drilling to the wall and the floor very near the tank The day it started to leak. Personally I think this had a lot to do with it. So I blame myself I should’ve moved it.

Here in Sweden where I live you can buy used tanks for a fragment of the price new. Especially the big tanks. Many buy tanks and shortly after they discover it was nothing for them. Most people want small to medium size tanks so the big ones is hard to sell. You can many times find 125-250 gallon tanks with all gear like filters, pumps, decorations for like 100-300 usd. New it cost at least 10 times more.

My reentry into the aquarium hobby after a break of 25 year or so was an 80 gallon tank I got used from a local family who were moving across country 2 years ago. It came complete with substrate, lid, lights, filter, decorations and fish. It was fully set up the day I purchased it, no leaks. I got a company that moves aquariums to move it the couple of miles from the owner’s house to mine. The fish were in buckets, the filter, etc., were in totes, but the substrate was still in the tank. They set it up in our great room, and it seemed fine. Two weeks later I came down in the morning to 40 gallons or so of water on my hardwood Brazilian Cherry floor, which was the only casualty. No matter how carefully you check a used tank, stuff happens.

I Just purchased what was only supposed to be a 55 gallon tank off of Facebook Market place, He listed it for 60.00. I was in a pinch and needed the tank so i offered him 50.00. when he dropped it off to me he also brought a 10 gallon with everything i needed to set it up right then, Lights, heater, filter, gravel the whole nine yards, he also threw in a 1 1/2 gallon Cube tank. a very large ship deco's, some other odd's and ends. I've had NO Problem with this 55 gallon tank what so ever. I'm currently using it is a fry grow out tank as my Guppies and Platys are reproducing at a rate i cant keep up with LOL I'm going to sell them locally i think. a 1.00 a fish I'll be rich in 6 Months at this rate. My 49 gallon Guppy tank is just wow with little babies that i need to get in there & Catch today, i have a 20 gallon tank with Platys not so many babies in there but some. and i have a BEAUTIFUL Betta .. He's my beautiful boy indeed =) I'm 52 years old, I've been keeping fish since i was roughly 18 .. i could not go without my little water babies. yes fish keeping is work but in my honest opinion it's work well worth what you get in the end

The only new tank that I've ever purchased was my first one (70L for about £25). All of my others have been second hand. Never had any issues at all. They are worth the risk, especially now with so many people leaving the hobby and, essentially, giving stuff away. Fish tanks depreciate like nothing else as well. If you buy one new, realise that it going to be worth a fraction of what you paid as soon as it leaves the shop.

That's why I always test the tank. I'm currently testing my saltwater tank because it has been sitting without water for 3 years. I've done the same thing for my freshwater 30 gallon. My saltwater is a 33 gallon. Though, the only thing that can be problematic as a second hand is canister filters. When I bought my 30 gallon freshwater tank, it hasn't ran water for quite a bit. The filter that came with it as well. And that's where my first mistake was made. I didn't test the filter and I went about to set it up. That's when I noticed that leaked. I had to buy another o ring for it.

I have many used tanks, just inspect before you buy and if the seals are shot or if the rims are broken, a reseal is actually pretty simple and new rims are as well. I'll do the work, but will definitely want a reduced price lol.. maybe you could do a video on what to look for as far as seals and when a tank has to be broken all the way down and rebuilt completely, and whether it's worth the effort?.. I also wouldn't mind seeing a video about your pro/con views on building your own huge wooden tank with glass viewing panels, as I have plans to remodel my very nice basement to accommodate a fish room large enough to do so.. I'm still on the fence about it and have gotten many opinions, but yours would be very valued

All but one of our tanks is used. I checked them in the tub first to see if there were leaks. I used a dry erase marker to mark the levels and would come back the next day. One did fail the test and I am meaning to re-seal it as another tank currently in use is going to need a new seal eventually too and I want a backup tank. It needs a good clean too. Our other used tank is working just fine though I did replace the filter that came with it. Used tanks are the only real way I can be in this hobby.

It depends. I probably wouldn't buy used large aquarium, but I could make an exception. On one hand aquarium silicone lasts for decades and larger tanks are less prone to giving a leak despite the algae and all. I had a 20gallon aquarium with transparent silicone, which was over 30 years old. We sold it because of scratches. Glass would probably give before the silicon, as it gets weaker, but again that's in decades. LFS was selling their show tank (renovation), over a decade old, but perfectly fine. Just no 5yr guarantee. Now there are two real problems: How well the aquarium was made and how it was used or stored. Some brands use cheaper or thinner glass and in a year these tanks don't just spring a leak, they burst open. Also if the aquarium wasn't sitting properly... A well made aquarium can handle a lot, but I heard some horror stories.

My best deal. 5 ft 90 gallon acrylic tank. The guy said it leaked scratched up fogged up looking. Novus polishing products and acrylic rods and $100 later it's been up in my basement for the last 4 years no leaks and it was free

So recently I saw a 30 gallon tank for sale for a really cheap price. This came with the stand and a whole lot of new starter kit products I contact the person and I asked them how and what condition is your tank and they replied is in fantastic condition with a few little chips and a little scratch as they've had the tank for awhile, so I asked him please send me a picture of your tank and please send me a picture of chip on the glass. They said it was very minimal and it was absolutely nothing to worry about, but they would send me a photo. I was shocked when I received the photo . The chip was as big as my thumb on the glass corner where the sealant is. It was a biggest chip that I've seen ever, hence why I do not and I cannot trust use tanks. Unless it's displayed with water inside it so I can see there are no leaks there are no cracks then that's when I will have trust!!! I'm sure there are many tanks on sale that are used which are great! This was just my experience always ask more questions!!! See more photos! Great video restores my faith!

I recently bought a 120 Xtra High for $100 off a buddy who I helped getting it used in the first place. He filled it up as is and used it, no leaks. I resealed it after I bought it just to be safe. No issues :-) worth it

Absolutely! I've never bought a new aquarium. Just have them send you pics of it full of water, and if it has been stored dry, outside for any amount of time just cut out the silicone and redo it yourself. Easy money!

I have experience with 3 used tanks. One was an absolute nightmare. No saving it but I still use the stand to this day. The other two have been fantastic. My son even shot the 125 with a BB gun and it's still in service

I have one used tank, and it worked out great. However, this past year I bought a new Aqueon rimless tank, tested it, set it up, scaped it ... And within a day it leaked everywhere. Took it back. Got a replacement. Did all of that process all over again. And within a day, it leaked all over. Broke it all down again, took it back and started over with a different brand. So leak risks are there whether you buy used or new.

Be a good video to show how to safely upgrade to a new or used tank. How to deal with fish during the upgrade. Take down of old tank and setup of new tank in same location. I'm curious how y'all do it because I'm thinking of doing that soon and hoping my large frontosas don't freak too much.

The big advice i would give is check the colour of the silicon, if it's at all orange avoid it. It will still hold water but it means last user had something in there that leeched copper and thats no good for fish apparently .

Up to about 55 gallon you can easily reseal. From just the inside. The water pressure usually can’t permeate the sealant. Higher gallonage is risky. They seriously require a complete disassemble to do a factory reseal. My experience at 6 am with a rupture flooding after being totally sound for a week after an inner reseal on a 210. Never again.

All my big aquariums were bought used. Have had to reseal several of them. Actually have 3 to reseal now. 2 of them are 220’s and 1 300.

Most of my aquariums I acquired free. I only had to buy a new top frame for one tank, but I always take them 100% apart to clean them. Those black frame pieces hold a lot of smelly nastiness. Then I reseal them and put the frames back on, boom 100% new.

As long as it holds water 🤷 isn't hard to clean one up & reseal if needed either.. I even take broken tanks. Usually at least MOST of the glass is fine & if I find another, just take all the good pieces & seal them together..

Would the difference be if they’re tanks that are put up empty and the seals dry out as a tank that’s in use and the seals stay new as they say they were bought.

I just bought a used 55 gallon drained it and cleaned out very well ect. Been sitting there for 2 weeks now the filter is a 75 gallon. It's wet inside yet. I didn't clean it or anything yet. I'm just wondering what to do about the filter if I should clean it and if so how? Or if I just throw it on and let it do its thing?

Just picked up a used 75 gallon and 30 gallon with a stand, 3 heaters, air pump, gravel and tons of decor (20$ pieces) ALL OF THIS for JUST 20$ 🙌🏾💯💯 they had been in storage for some time and the unit was auctioned and the gentleman didn’t care for them at all. Deal was too good to pass up.

I've just bought a second hand 100l tank, so tomorrow I'm giving it a good clean and leaving water in it for 24 hours, so I can see if it does have any leaks but for £30, I can't really moan as it came with pretty much everything apart from a filter which I have ordered.. I even bought gravel and driftwoods before I had even bought another tank lol as I'm now officially on tank number 6.. There's only 2 tanks that we have that are brand new

Bought a 75 that was actively running when I picked it up, no leaks nothing, less than two weeks later it was leaking all over my floor in the middle of the night. So yeah it’s a crapshoot when it comes to used, I will say if it has “wood” trim, maybe reseal it yourself before filling

Thanks, John! I've never actually bought a used tank, I preferred to buy them new HOWEVER!!! I recently adopted a BEARDED DRAGON and he came with a big tank-- it's got to be at least a 75 gal. I bought the "reptile" screen top, some lights ,etc. I'm seriously planning on buying a new enclosure for him , and then.. .. ..should I clean up this tank and SELL IT? SET IT UP WITH FISH? I must add, I'm living with my Daughter and I don't know IF she'll let me fill it with water!! That would be MY choice, but I guess I'll have to wait

I never got a used tank before. There is a local person that has for sale (2) 125 gallon tanks with an FX4 for $400. He said he has both tanks filled with water in his garage and that one was re sealed 2 years ago. Do you have any tips on what to check? My biggest fear is the tank to burst of something like that. I have small kids and that would be really bad if happens when they are near the tanks. Any advice? Thank you so much!!!!
