that "orange peel" paint is pretty common these days actually. I've had several vehicles from multiple manufacturers that all had it. Nicely comprehensive review, Brad, thank you. I didn't know that the Sport could be so capable, because I had assumed it was 2WD. When the new generation of Tacomas was announced I was very tempted by the option of a manual transmission -- the 21st century's ultimate anti-theft device. Living in Washington, D.C. the anti-theft/anti-carjacking dimension of a manual is very appealing. But I won't buy the first year of a new model or redesign so went ahead with the 2nd year of the other redesigned Toyota truck: the Tundra. Oh, my -- could not have imagined that the first Toyota I'd own would become synonymous with a decline in Toyota quality. Mine was built late enough that it is not in Toyota's recently announced recall of 102,000 engines so maybe it dodged that bullet. Maybe not. Meanwhile, all its components are covered by Geico's "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" -- financial protection I became aware of when looking at Jeep Gladiators a few years ago. I adore my new Tundra Limited TRD Off-Road -- by far the the most capable, fast and comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. But am also keeping my '04 Honda Element, which is a great city car as well as ode to simplicity of days gone by. On that note, would love to see Toyota take on Ford's little Maverick truck -- something truly small and very basic.

Evan "Iron Man" Stewart, a legend in the Baja 1000 Arenas. I got to say hello to him many times when we were living right down the street from him in Lakeside, CA. He lived on the corner across from the elementary school. He would drive one of the trucks he had down the street hauling ass. We would be right there on the side of the street and he'd wave at us driving by, sounded so awesome...agh the good ole days. I remember one time, he was fucking hauling ass down the street and the Sheriff were there. They just waved because they knew who he was. He'd take his truck up behind the old junior high school up on the mountains there. During classes, we'd see him up there behind TDS and he'd be doing burnouts in the dirt up on the hillside there. Great memories of him, his boys were awesome too. We used to tell his kids that whenever they had the trucks outside, we'd watch over them. I mean, we were kids back then, what could we do. We'd sit on the curb outside their house on the side street hoping to hear Ivan Rev up that engine....he never disappointed. Thanks Brad for pointing out that edition of Tacoma in Ivan Stewart's name. We had alot of fun watching him race up and down the street and him letting us watch him work on his trucks.

As an Aussie reading some of these comments regarding the 'weakness' of Toyotas, I can but sympathise that our American brothers and sisters can't easily purchase the legendary solid-axle 70 series range, nor - it seems - the small/mid 'unbreakable' Hilux. Our conditions are the 'real-est of real' when it comes to the necessity for reliability and utility. Down here, while not everyone is a Toyota fan (and fair enough)...their toughness, range and reliability is not even a matter of debate. Sure we have good-natured jokes at their over-simpleness (farm-trucks Ha!) and less than stellar articulation. But never their epic durability. Case in point: our remote (and in Aus...that can literally mean hundreds and even thousands of miles from asphalt) ranger, emergency rescue and fire fighting vehicles are invariably Toyotas. Are their North American 'cousin' vehicles really so removed from that DNA? From my perspective it's interesting to read...another benefit to loving Brad's channel!

It’s all over the net about how Toyota is having problems with a lot of their vehicles. The three major issues I hear about the taco is engine, tranny, and suspension. I would stay away from Toyota until they get things straight. And if they never put a 6 cylinder back in the taco, I’ll never buy another one.

I do agree that there’s a lot of stories about problems. However when I bought my early (11/15 build) 3rd gen the forums were also full of stories about 3rd gen problems. I took the chance, and 8+ years and 92K miles later it’s been trouble free. And the naturally aspirated V6 and 6 speed AT are as sluggish feeling as ever. But now that I’m used to it, it’s not THAT bad. I think I’d prefer a 4 cylinder turbo though.
