This is very tricky. You would def safe money on rent but... Yeh, I enjoyed my summers in the village a great deal, we were a bunch of 5 kids from the neighbourhood+ a dog, wandering around the woods, climbing trees, building bunkers... Canoeing, fishing, taking care of farmyard animals (not always happy about that one) but.. do kids even do these now? We had to invent what to do. No cinema etc. BUT... if your son is lucky enough to go to a good school.. that´s something really important and hard to get. Maybe you might consider a typically Czech solution- buying+fixing a cottage/small house in the countryside. :). That would allow you to have the option of getting out of Prague for a while, your son can enjoy it as a kid as well as a teenager, having a place to invite friends.

Yeah rent is getting so crazy. Probably should have emphasized this more! It is really shocking how nice the school my son goes to as its public, and yet the facilities look so modern. The teachers at least its my impression that they are really good. Every couple weeks they send an album of pictures of things the kids have been doing to parents and grand parent's emails. The time and care put into this would be unheard of from a public school in the US. My son is also making friends and actually looks forward to going to school which I didnt think he would adapt to so easily. Just this factor really makes it all worth it. That is a good idea about fixing up a small house. I have been keeping an eye out for places near my wife's parent's.. houses in their area are not the cheapest but maybe I should look for something cheaper than just needs work. Hope your doing well and your enjoying the autumn weather!

@@ThePragueExpat0 A few years back I was driving around the northern parts of Czechia and I was surprised when I saw a rather huge 1930ties villa with a beautiful garden for sale for ...basically the price of a tiny/dingy apartment in Prague... It´s good for people who don´t need the city to do their job... I have heard that now is a good time to look to buy cottages because people sell? Didn´t check the info but it makes sense, people even sell half-built new houses since they can´t finance those anymore... As for the school. I don´t have kids myself but I helped my foreign neighbours´ kids battle Czech schooling system. And I was appalled by... some of the textbooks as well as the teachers... So yeh. It depends on the quality of the staff, the principal, doesn´t really matter if it´s private or not but very probably you have a better chance to find some good teachers/schools in Prague. Where do your wife´s parents live may I ask? I love the autumn the most and it´s really lovely this year!

They live kind of near Týniště nad Orlicí. They live in between several farms so I cant say what village they are technically apart of. I was looking for places near Rychnov nad Kneznou as my wife's sisters live there and its a prettty nice town (very close to skiing area). Because they have a big Skoda factory in Rychnov there is bad housing shortage in that area.

@@ThePragueExpat0 Yeh. And since it´s close to the skiing areas the prices go up again because people like to buy cottages there and rent them to those who want to spend time skiing... Ugh. Broumovský výběžek? Around Broumov? Not that far, between Krkonoše and Orlické mountains and probably cheaper? I just saw a nice large cottage there, must be some small cheap ones as well. I took 3 days off in Vysočina, in the middle of nowhere, the guy just bought his second ...farm house...(must be a better word for this but..) It is large though, he rents it to those poor guys who run away from the city, companies which organise weekend retreats and courses (one can run an English course there :). While driving around I was really curious, must be small cottages for sale, some look the part...

Hi Daniel, Sir_Mac here, as always! I have few points on my mind, so I am going to try to mention them one by one: 1) Chicken pox and other kids' diseases - it is hard to witness it, when it affects your child, but let me inform you that with the age of 12 years, approximately, the situation is going to turn much better and your child / children will be the most healthy members of your family. 2 diseases / flus per year (during fall and spring) would be the maximum... 2) I don't know, if you, or your family has some "chata" or "chalupa" - I would translate those czech terms into english as a "summer residence", where you can spend the warmer part of year in there. When the fall or winter comes, you can "zazimovat", I would translate it as "conservate for winter", when you turn off all devices, the heating is working only if the temperatures inside goes below 8°C, ... There is definitely one advantage, living (or at least spending some time) in the countryside.. If you have good or great relationships with your neighbours, and those neighbours are small producers of hens, ducks, pigs, turkeys, geese, cows, potatoes, eggs, etc., you can purchase any of their production for reasonable price, home-made / home-rised quality... And it is absolutely FRESH! And when the economic situation is not that good, you can lease your chata / chalupa or your Prague flat, depending where you actually reside. 3) There is state support, compensating the electricity / gas prices, so I assume you and your wife are aware of those compensations... 4) You mentioned you come from the state of Michigan? I have never been there, but there is KZbin channel called "Lex & Cinnabon", and the main focus of the channel is on a very smart cat, and the owner, Alex Sweers, shares his bits from his life. And the country and climate seems to be the same like here, in the Czech Republic! 5) I can hardly imagine, how difficult is to obtain the czech citizenship, but I don't know, if you watch "Dream Prague" KZbin channel, so its creator, Jennifer Preston, is in the process and she seems scared to try to apply for the citizenship. But I would definitely recommend you to apply for the czech citizenship, because you are going to feel like having new roots... 6) Daniel, be careful when using the word "nightclub" "night-club", because in czech, if you see a sign "nightclub", it means "brothel" and you will find an XXX-rated entertainment in there... So in czech, "nightclub" doesn't mean "music club" or "discoteque". 7) I have some suggestion(s) for you to make video(s) about, but the suggestion(s) is / are about, let's say, controversial or painful topic(s). BLM, metoo, racism, gender issues and other things, which are perceived and resolved in the US and the Czech Republic very differently. And maybe I am missing some crucial and historic informations, but from my point of view, all those aforementioned matters are treated in a bad way in the US. I know it is hard, it could cause some troubles, but knowing the context and using a common sense could solve a lot of things or at least bring some understanding...

1.My son already had Chicken pox so we were confused because you dont get chicken pox twice and so it turned out to be this Hand Foot Mouth Disease. Im not really complaining about getting sick.. that is part of having children. It is just an explanation why I havent been uploading videos. 2.Yeah if we were living near my wife's parents they have some local sources for cheese eggs potatoes and then they themselves have ducks. Not being able to benefit from that is a con I didnt think about. 3.I have been reading that Europe may not have enough gas in reserves to last the winter. Its all just very worrysome and it just seems to be escalating. No end in sight. 4.Yeah the state of Michigan does have similar weather and climate to the Czech Republic haha. In Michigan the one thing that is different is the Great Lakes can have a strong effect on the weather. We would get what is called "Lake Effect Snow" which can generate massive snow storms and it amounts to being more snow than I have ever seen here. Winters here are closer to what I experience living in Washington State near Seattle.. more mild which is what I prefer. 5. I would be open to applying for Czech Citizenship however I am a long way from having the languange skill to pass the test. I also wont qualify to even apply till I live here a couple more years correct? I mean I just moved here in 2021.. Jen has been here alot longer. 6. I laughed out loud at your comment about "nightclubs". When I lived in New York we just called it "the club".. I never went to places like that here so I didnt know they were called "discoteque" or music club. Yeah I will be definitely careful not to use the word "nightclub" anymore if it could be confused with a brothel. 7. As far as Blm and racism goes I have thought about doing a video on that stuff but as someone who lived in areas where BLM burned buildings and rioted I am not a supporter of that organization and its kind of a negative topic I dont want to talk about. People will say if you dont like BLM than your a racist which is NOT true. Also I have numerous friends that are gay/lesbian/bisexual.. that doesnt mean I support transgenders doing library story time with my 5 year old. At the same time I dont want to hurt someone who is transexual by putting out content that they will take offence to.

You should look into towns like Pardubice. Housing is a bit cheaper, you get most of the servises and oportunities of Prague and more calm living experience. It really is a nice middle ground and in case of Pardubice, you are an hour away from Prague by train or highway and there is an international airport.

Living in Prague without speaking Czech is very easy. The downside is it can be very isolating and lonely, depending on your situation. If you are good at going out and finding other ex-pats and finding or creating some kind of community then you should be fine. If your work is highly involved with other expats that also will make it easy to integrate here. Czechs know English on average at a highly intermediate level.. but they will always prefer to be friends with other Czechs.Like anyone I guess they are tribal like that and prefer to be around their own. I have been getting alot of questions similar to this lately. Maybe I will do a live steam sometime and answer questions more directly as I dont know if my answer here is too broad. Either way good luck.

Hi, could you please write how much money you can save in your city/state from your salary after all monthly expenses, working, for example, as a lifeguard in a swimming pool or in a fast food restaurant? In Czechia, you can save about $470 if you rent an apartment, and about $640 if you rent a dorm room. I'm thinking about whether to stay in Czechia or move to the US in about a year, some say that in the US half of the population lives from paycheck to paycheck in trailers and can't even rent an apartment, and others say that they save a lot of money in the US and in a few years they bought a big house. And they also say that if you have an accident in the United States or break a bone, for example, or need to have your teeth treated or even worse, have an operation, you will have to give all your money that you have earned and they also say that they are laying off workers en masse and that people cannot find work

Your channel is like the Encyclopedia of Prague with a personal touch. Very distinctive. As a follow up to last night's conversation; my questions are related to the Visa process...is it a nightmare as is the case with some places expats pursue? Is the application even in English? Do you have to establish a residency with a Prague address first? I have a million questions but those will do for now. In my case, I would just be looking for a studio apartment to rent as a single retiree in a couple of years from now. I really want to move there. Any insights or helpful links you might know of would be greatly appreciated.

Man this is a topic that Im just not very knowledgable about because of my Irish Citizenship and being married to a Czech Citizen it was all very easy for me. I do have American friends that went through Visa process and from what I see alot of people come here and find a job and then get sponsored through that job. I am not at all familiar with visas for retirees. I know there is a visa for like freelancers they call the Zivno visa.. Here is an article on that visa: movetoprague.com/zivno-visa-czech-republic/ so if you intend to give maybe drumming lessons that might be an option at least to begin with. From what I have experienced yes the immigration offices are a nightmare and the forms will largely be in Czech. Many Americans hire a service to help them through the process. The apartment hunt part isn't very difficult and there are a lot of people in real estate that speak English well. That being said if you have someone in the process that speaks Czech you might get a better deal.

As a someone who moved out from Prague when I was kid, I don't really recommend it, your kids have no future in some village, they will not find friends there and they will be stucked behind fence at your garden and walking 2 km to train station later after they switch to high school or university. Think about that carefully, because move to some place 30 minutes by walk from nearest civilisation is really the worst thing for kids, they will lost all social connections in age when it is the most important. I understand that some people want to save money and want more open space, but I just don't recommend it. You save money on housing, but you pay even more for tickets or for fuel to car, in Prague, public transportation is 3650 Kč/year, that's almost for free and you can always find better shop or supermarket which has exactly what you want, in small city or village, you buy what they have, not what you want or you have to drive 10 km to bigger store, I don't think you will save that much money by moving from Prague. I would say that ideal compromise is to live somewhere on edge of Prague like Klánovice or something, you are almost out from Prague, but you still have advantages of Prague like universal public transportation, you jump on train or bus and you are in center in like 15 minutes. But these parts of Prague are getting pretty expensive too. If you really want to move from Prague, I recommend cities with at least 30 000 people with some infrastructure, shops, schools and something to do for young people. If you believe that kids from Prague will find friends in some village, then no, they won't, people in villages are interested only in - fish hunting, football, cars, beer and girls, there is nothing to talk about with them, when you want to go to cinema, you are weird, when you want to do some trip to different city just to check what's there, you are weird, when you want to just walk somewhere without car, you are weird.......it was like that in all villages and small cities I lived in.

Iv lived in several American cities and cant say enough good things about this city. I agree though the EU isnt doing anything to improve things in the Czech Republic in the future. Thanks for your perspective. Glad you found a place you are happier outside of CZ.

@@ThePragueExpat0 Did I not remember to mention that I am Czech born, and am completely conversant with all the details that you have come to experience? Any betting man, without blinders on, would accept that the prosperity that once was part of the EU experience is in particular a long shot as far as the probability of degradation. The only important question is how severe will it get. The embasador when I asked her if we could comfortably retire on our pensions back home - was frankly shocked and said we can live like kings. But just in the four years since that has changed by ~ 40 percent. It the Philipines, Vietnam or in Ecuador the costs are not rising, and they are ~ 1/3 of Praha. So ...... I'm not at all happy about my (possible) U-turn. Sad rather. the CZ is my homeland.

@@ThePragueExpat0 could you please write how much money you can save in your city/state from your salary after all monthly expenses, working, for example, as a lifeguard in a swimming pool or in a fast food restaurant?
