I just hope the desire to buy something new and shiny is not a reflection of other issues in your life. You have a lovely family, so as long as you and they are being fulfilled by the travel and lifestyle and not drowning in the pressure of vlogging and other life pressures, it isn’t going to matter what size or shape your van will be.

The issue that seems to be developing is that people are starting to realise that content creators on KZbin etc is not the real world. It feels like that content creators are travelling for a business rather than the joy of travelling. They have to create a revenue stream to travel and this drives the content. Many of us who travel do it for the love of it, pay our own way and deal with lifes issues in private. This isn't a criticism just a view cheers
@TheLifestylePioneers7 ай бұрын
You're 100% right. What's shown in a 25min weekly video is never going to accurately reflect what life is like 24/7. We try and show a bit of everything but at the end of the day we want to inspire and entertain, not just show what real life is like. Making content is costly and time consuming so it needs to generate some revenue or no-one would be able to do it long-term.

I’d say it’s preferable to have a gorgeous, comfortable, functional van as a base, you can always ‘rough it’ when you want. It’s hard to achieve the opposite.

Simple...add a small tent, some blow up mattresses, amd a portable stove, portable potty or shovel etc to your kit. Go where you want in the van, then leave it there and push on further with the tent. You get the best of both worlds. Feeling the sand/ mud between your toes, and luxery at home. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. We did The Gibb this way. Got to camp and get close to nature..sometimes uncomfortably close, then return a few days later to a nice home on wheels. 😊
@cynthiakavanagh69728 ай бұрын
We did the same thing the first time we did the GRR and lots of other places. This is good advice. Simon and Liz, you swag camped with your last van; that’s all that’s needed now. Build a new van if that’s what’s wanted (it seems to be the thing to do these days); before you built this van, you were looking then at options to go smaller, further and harder, and it seems like that itch hasn’t gone away. However, I’m with Liz; less over-thinking & more just getting out and doing with a simple camping set up.

You can step outside anytime you like! You can’t always escape the weather or the bugs if you don’t have anywhere to retreat to, and being full time you need options from time to time, particularly if someone is unwell. Setup the vehicle and/or the caravan with a basic kitchen and start using it when you can to experience the outdoors more. You already have swags I think, and have talked about doing more travels in just the vehicle so setting that up with a kitchen would make sense.

You're spot on. The trouble is sometimes we need to be pushed out of our comfort rather than just stepping out. We definitely need to use the car camping more though.

The Challenge for the future is finding new locations to Video. W.A. is at Saturation point with youtubers, covering all areas from Esperance to the Kimberley. The Beaches, Forests, Desets, Canning Stock Route, and Gibb River Road, the Goldfields, and the Wheatbelt, all done several times by youtubers living the dream. On top of this, is the number of formerly free camps now being closed for various reasons. That's the real challenge for the future.

We’ve done a lot of travel…WA, NT, SA, QLD TAS and NSW…harsh off road and bitumen…we were initially inspired by some YT’ers…the well known ones…however very quickly we realised this/these were our trips…not following in others footprints. Getting water, food, dump points…where to stay were never shown and still rarely shown by YT’ers and these are daily chores…plus washing, checking van and car. We love the experiences but we now don’t get caught by the glitz and glamour as shown on YT.
@TheLifestylePioneers7 ай бұрын
You're spot on, and to be honest it's a tricky balance. While we try and show as much as possible of the mundane aspects of travelling, it dosn't make the most entertaining or watchable content.

Like the TOP 10 best/worst style videos , the relentless creep toward homogenised carefully crafted fake sensational (OH NO OUR TRIP IS OVER only to find they had a flat tyre 🙄) thumbnails coupled with the not too subtle spruiking of mediocre brands/products is driving viewers to search for something new and could easily be the beginning of the end of similar channels. I'm very aware making YT profitable is not easy and there's a fine line to walk. Interestingly, there a significant data showing a swing in popularity and searches back toward warts and all, less professionally edited content. For example, having recently sat down with the owner of a large and successful premium Australian caravan manufacturer we didn't discuss the pretty beach footage, we discussed at length your water maker system... food for thought. Keep up the good work.

Hello I feel you and I are on the same page (see comment of mine), I enjoy watching the early episodes of content creators and as you mentioned before they become a “business”. All creators follow the same template approach and most if not all suppliers hitch there wagon to these creators. For example when I see another creator telling me how good the Ecoflow power hub is I turn off immediately. You could name another 3 product suppliers who are everywhere on line now. It’s the same with destinations, how many creators do we need in WA at the same time? They all seem to head to the current “in” place and follow each other. What disappoints me is that they don’t need to follow the creator template, many have a good story to tell and share. They don’t need to push products or create tired cliche thumbnails, just share your story and we will watch. Anyway I feel that the mood of the viewers is changing and more and more will become tired of the same content and same products being pushed. We are starting to see more creators have “honesty” sessions about there channels. I wish these guys all the best and hope they go back to being a family that traveled to see this amazing country. Leave all of the business side of it behind. Cheers

@itsrixtube food for thought indeed. There's a lot to consider when it comes to content and it's frustrating to see fake, sensational and click bait content perform well. We keep telling ourselves they will burn out and it's not a good long-term strategy for growth, but we're yet to see it. We want to keep it real, but that's only possible if people decide to watch the videos. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. People say they want real and honest content but the data says differently.

My observation - you have the perfect set up for your age and stage right now - 2 young kids, full time liveaboard and you aren’t retired. When the kids are no longer with you and it’s just the 2 of you , you can lighten the load and go where you will whenever. Until then, enjoy having the best of both worlds - a fully kitted tow vehicle and a base camp.

Yes, I agree. We were down in Denmark in February, staying at the Big4. This park is huge 250 sites. It would half empty and then fill up daily, even some that wanted to stay a day or two longer had difficulty in getting a spot. Quite a few were W.A locals, farmers having a couple of weeks off. But most from over east. Reminded me of kindergarten, but instead of the best toys in the sandpit, the best Toys in the caravan park. The Misso and I had the same difference of opinions when moving up from our camper trailer 5 years ago. I wanted a hybrid, something like an AOS/KK for another 5 years before moving to a van, but my wife wanted some more creature comfort (an ensuite) and somewhere to get way from the bugs as well (they drive her insane). In the end we got a 203 Lotus Trooper and I have to agree she was right. I do miss towing a smaller rig and being able to get to some places but set up and pack up is great and the ensuite creature comfort is a winner. I have a full slide out kitchen outside and I normally do the cooking so that keeps me happy. Keeping the bugs out of the van is still somewhat of an issue though!!

Yeah. We just upgraded from a foldout to a small hybrid, both with outdoor kitchens. I have no interest in an inside kitchen. For us, that will be later in life when we don't feel so capable. To me, what we do is still camping. I'm not interested in towing a small motel room. It's all about the outdoors. I cook when the sun is going down and the flies are gone. Sometimes mozzies, but use a spray or bug zapper. Part of the thrill is overcoming the challenges. I love cooking on a real fire or in my Cobb oven. I do that more often than use the slide out 4 burner gas stove. Having said that, we don't have kids with us, and we don't do it full-time. Good luck in your new plans.

Things i hate in having a full outdoor kitchen and outdoor living space, the bugs it can't be good spraying Aerogard on your self every time outside and fly spray, i have big roll out awning, easy to pull out any time, hate standing in water while cooking dinner, sitting out side in freezing winter nights eating dinner, i hate summer cooking and eating out in heat and the flys, the rest of the times great being outdoors cooking, eating, but my next Van's will have everything inside with long folding beach outside too put the cookers on

Maybe the outdoors isn't for you 🤔🤣 I hear you though, it can be challenging sometimes.

Keep it real & don't upsell it to be something it's not. Keep your private lives to yourselves. Include the breakdowns, mishaps etc so it doesn't seem like travel is all rainbows & lollipops. You don't need to have the best & biggest vans like all caravanning You tubers seem to be doing now. Hubby & I first did our first lap in 1989 in an old HZ Kingswood & 16ft Franklin caravan (no ensuites back then) with a total value of $4500. Our first 5 month lap cost us 10k. There's so many people out there that see You tuber content & believe they have to start out with the best of everything to make it achievable. Keep it real, do it for the love of it, not the money, if you don't love it with a passion then its time to move on.

Thanks, we appreciate the perspective. I did my first lap in 2005 and it was very different back then, but life's different now.

Please continue to keep the videos positive. I stopped watching another channel because there were too many negatives/ whinging. The outdoors are great when the environment is good, but you always need the indoor comforts as a backup. Tip: we have a portable induction cook top which we can use both indoors and outdoors. Most of our cooking is outdoors on the Webber and on the induction cook top.

Great content Simon, it would be testing some times espically for new full time travellers. You and the family show what it is like to live in a caravan full time with your ups and downs. Would be great to see more content on when you can't get into a campsite that's full and have to try and find somewhere else also the bloopers that happens when filming before the editing. I will see how we go when we head west for a month in our 15ft stoney creek hybrid as that suits us for couple travelling, will be the longest trip we have done. Fingers crossed everything goes well.Hope to catch up with you when we are over there🍻🥂
@TheLifestylePioneers7 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. We'll keep that in mind. Most of our videos include the bloopers if you watch through to the end.

Ages and stages. Like you - I have tented with my children and then, as I got older - switched to a camper trailer and couldn’t believe the luxury. Now single, 65 and retiring soon - I’ve decided to travel around Australia again. Everyone has their opinion on what I should travel with - most recommend a van! This time, however, I’m going for a small 13 ft hybrid caravan full height. My criteria - it has to be something I can manage myself and be reliable as I am quite mechanically challenged. It also has to have outdoor cooking but, for the times when it is wet or there are too many bugs - I need to be able to cook inside. I prefer to live outside but I’m old enough to want some creature comforts. I live in Vic so cooking outside is not much of a challenge - few storms and bugs but it absolutely was a pain in the neck when there were midges and wall to wall flies. I’ll be interested to see what you get that would cover all your bases for power, dishwasher, storage for a family, somewhere to do editing and home schooling, etc. I imagine travelling full time with young children would be quite challenging so would recommend buying a two burner gas stove and trying the whole cooking outside thing in current setup and see how it goes. Have fun x

Done full time camper trailer to small van with outdoor kitchen to massive 23.6. With family travelling full time big is better. Soon as we stop full time travel we will go back to 15ft Hybrid.

I'm looking forward to following the journey as you guys design the new van. It's quite unusual and very exciting to see a travelling family such as yourselves turning back toward their roots in terms of camping comfort and experiencing the environment. Generally it's a one-way journey toward bigger vans & vehicles, less exposure to the outdoors and more click-bait, which is not what we're interested in, so we stop watching. Good on you for trying to keep it a bit more real.

Not full time travellers but we do travel for months at a time… Recently upgraded from camper trailer to caravan. I really miss our outdoor kitchen. I do enjoy my early morning coffee in bed made in the van however all other cooking is done outside on Weber or fire but I would love an outdoor kitchen again.

Simon, is changing the house the answer, or getting out of the office more? I have recently changed from a Tvan to an AOR, both with outdoor cooking. I love it, however, the two biggest drawbacks wind and wet weather. The Tvan was pretty good, but I have yet to see a caravan that has addressed the issue of an end wall on a awning that is simple and effective. Similarly, you need a good wind break around you stove, ( I don't know about induction in a breeze). Look forward to the discussion and ultimate choice of van.👍
@TheLifestylePioneers7 ай бұрын
You might be right! I think we'll stick with full-height rather than pop-top for the wind and extra storage. Outside cooking will definitely be induction.
@rossharvey14968 ай бұрын
Simon says it seems crazy not wanting to make things more comfortable and Simon is correct. I don’t think going backwards is “better different”. If you want to move on to something different that may also suit all of the family get a unimog.
@TheLifestylePioneers7 ай бұрын
I guess we'll see. Unimog are cool, but not really practical.

Bigger bathroom and smaller kitchen... bath tub does sound nice 😂 No more dishwasher?? 😱😱 Water filtration would definitely be of more use in a smaller van if you have less storage.

We always want what we don't have right? 😁 As an idea for a future video (and maybe you've previously touched on the topic in prior video(s)), maybe you could briefly discuss how close you ended up and if it met your expectations when you were narrowing down your choice of vehicle and caravan after doing all the analysis. That said, I guess that's why you're getting a new caravan.

Thanks, Rich. We'll be sharing more about the decision making process over the coming months.

Sell it all and get a large cruising catamaran and do a lap via the wet route. Or get a large trailerable trimaran like a Corsair 880. That way you can also keep the car and explore inland.

Simon, think carefully about your next RV choice, we have arrived at a free camp tonight, the wind is blowing, it’s raining and it’s cold, we are so glad we can retreat into our well insulated Caravan with all the mod cons…sometimes in life we don’t realise how good we have it, until it’s gone. With all the comments you have received on this video, you should be able to make a well informed decision. Cheers Graham & Ann

The van is your home. If you want to rough it, just go tent camping for a holiday from your caravan, the same as you would if you lived in a house. And your headline was a bit on the click-bait side; please avoid this route.

If you have an outdoor kitchen, go induction cooking and a plumbed-in water and waste. It sucks having a bucket for the waste and having to screw on the water taps every time you set up. Oh and have a two way pantry, so opens inside and out👍

OMG keep the comfort and luxury! Happy wife happy life! You can always cook outside the caravan with a gas or induction cooker, etc, but if you only have outside, what about the flies, the heat, the cold (remember your trip to the southern highlands and there was snow!!). Yes, there are 4 of you and you're already in a small space, full time. If it was just for smaller trip, yes, go more rugged, but I reckon in your situation, you currently have the best of the everything!!! Don't do it Simon! Edit - have just seen the last bit of the video. It seems like you've come around Liz, so it's all good. I love my little haven of luxury to return to after a day outdoors, but you are probably more adventurous than me! As for my hubby - he's more of a "we've bought a caravan, this is it, for life", whereas I can see us changing it up in 10 years or so!

Start by working outside Simon! 😊 Next (if I were you) put your van in storage and spend $30k on a van. Second hand. Must be 10 years or more old. Do it for 6 months. Then you’ve got a great idea what your compromise point are and what they’re not. Oh, and buy a French press. No electricity needed but much better that instant coffee! Can’t wait to see what you guys do!

That's common. People fall for that idea because they only see the bright side, unless they start 'stalking' those few youtubers who actually tell it all. The question is, how much do you actually want to share with everyone else. Common sense should tell everyone, that there is plenty (probably more physical) challenges with this lifestyle than when lifting the feet onto the couch at home. In saying that, we pull our hats to all those people who home-school their children whilst travelling. On the other hand, the children will probably thrive in this lifestyle much more than sitting in a classroom with limited physical activities. We are very interested to see which caravan will be your next one. We are guessing something, but after your last change from one brand to another we are not sure, if we are nailed it ;-) All the best and thanks for your great videos.

Simon you shoulda put a bbq in- cook out doors on a Weber 😄 Liz it’s one thing to do 6 months or even a year in a camper, but full time you need what you have now. We run a soft floor Patriot as it goes anywhere but our big lap in 2027 will be in a van. In the top end humidity or bitter cold desert nights or in the snow canvas isn’t living it’s an adventure or even survival.

We are waiting for our new Lifestyle Reconn R2SE to be built in December then this time next year we will take off full time with our Jeep Gladiator.
