Frank saves the day once again with another quality weld repair. You are getting close to that 10K hour mark. The mig welds they put on from the factory just can't match ductility with 7018 welds. I hate to put it in a bad way but the factory welds are worn out. The mig welds from the factory are welded to hot on cold metal and they quench a bit from cooling to rapidly. The weld repairs you are making are a pain in the butt, but at least you are taking the time to do it right. Those 3/32 downhill low hydrogen welding rods are great for running a split bead 2 stringer cap when you just can't have undercut at all. They run good at around 100 amps. They flow extra nice from the preheat from the uphill passes. Just keep burning rods and hang in there. If you were not a good weldor it would be time for a new machine. I say there is another 3000 hours in that machine before it won't be fit for what you are doing with it. Even then you have had it for so long you know it through and through. I would keep it even after buying a new machine. This winter you will weld a lot but after you make it through all the warm months next year will be smooth sailing! Great video and great repair.

Thanks Tim! They just don't build them to last forever, I have been meaning to ask about that rod. I think I'll keep it if possible, that is unless I wear out the pipeliner fixing the welds!!! This repair was a quick one, not too bad at all.
@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
@@Digginok The stuff you have seen me do is all engineered with a life expectancy. It would be in the problem zone if you could not weld so well. Welding rods like 7018 are truly an inexpensive repair. That repair cost a lot more time than money. You have replaced pumps, done some pins and bushings and repacked some cylinders. If I was you I would want to run some of my money out before I let that machine go. Please don't take that as me tell you what to do, you gotta do what you feel in your heart is right. It never hurts to ask God to guide your decisions. You have stayed in business for a long time so your own judgement must be very good as well. When I am considering changing things up I am not too proud to bounce the idea off of my Dad, he is smarter and wiser than me. I sent you some more pictures ;) That pipeliner will last forever at the rate you use it. I bet you are still on the original main brushes.

@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
@@Digginok That machine is your right hand. You are a great operator, that being said you do run the B95 a lot. A man get comfortable with what he can do with what he has. I am more than willing to help you with that machine in any way I can. I wish there were not so many miles between us. I would love to work on equipment with you! You would be surprised if we took a weekend and did every pin and bushing. With that and rebuilt cylinder it would be crazy. When you have one down that far removing paint around welds and dye checking resolves a lot of problems before they happen. The machine is still strong. I worked in a shop that did a lot of rebuilds. Your machine is so well maintained that a rebuild would not be that bad. You have so many dollars worth of very good buckets for that machine, that if you replaced it you would almost have to get something bucket compatible.
@RockCreekEnterprisesNM6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that the factory mig welds are not as good as they could be and they don't have the penetration needed. But I also see a design flaw, that bracket looks to be almost solely designed for the lifting of the bucket and not for the down force of lifting the front of the tractor. I would be willing to bet the designers don't realise the amount of time the machine spends with the front tires off or nearly off the ground. If that bracket had another inch around the back of that pin boss, I don't think it would have broke like that. As always, another fine repair Frank.

Good job on the welding, thanks for the welding flash! I treat all machines equally,the operator always is the factor. My PC50MR2 Komatsu has a 2 meter stick and extra counterweight bringing total machine weight up to 14500 lb with 20 feet of reach from the pilot controls. Tractor backhoes are a perfect setup the only downfall I have with them is when you are in tight spaces you cannot spin around to get rid of the dirt. As far as putting money into a brand new machine I am a lot like you no way, go for a low hour newer machine and save a ton of money. When people know you are good on any machine they will pay more money to have a good operator. Thanks for sharing

Hi, I have been watching a number of your videos as you go about repairing your machine. A couple of comments for what they are worth. I live in Melbourne Australia and have worked in construction and building since the'80's so I keep my eyes open. I am struggling to recall the last time I saw a front loader backhoe. It was the late '90's with a curb and channel crew working past where I was living at the time. Most guys these days tend to run the mini excavator and a skid steer with the rubber tracked ones beginning to see off the wheels. Usually set up with a tipper towing a flat bed trailer with ramps. Zero swing excavators in all sizes are prolific on the Metro Tunnel service works crews and the road works for the new Westgate Tunnel project under the Yarra River. Take some test drives of this sort of equipment and get the feel for them. Sometimes it's not how much work you get done but how much work you seem to have got done.
@Digginok6 жыл бұрын
I dig side by side with minis, the minis cannot dig as fast. They do great when the soil is not hard, but there is no substitute for weight when you are in the tough stuff. I have used minis I have gotten a feel for them. Every situation is different my friend, I wouldn't want to go back to a 90s backhoe, they have made some major improvements since then. I'll remain a backhoe man, or cave man if you would prefer! In the end it's what my customers expect, they like what I'd do or I would not have a job, bottom line. I mean no disrespect to you. Thanks for watching down under!!!

@@Digginok Even if you do get another backhoe, I would keep the old one as a backup. I believe in having two of everything (except girlfriends). Even low hour equipment can go down on you and if it happens in the middle of a job you have a problem. With a backup you always have recourse. Also, backhoe loaders are just a good extra piece of equipment to have around, (Swiss Army Knife). I pretty much wore out a 82' year model JD410 but still keep it in the yard to load skid tanks, dirt, gravel or what not. It has a true self leveling front bucket, ( like JCB). I used to think a so called self leveling bucket meant that it levels itself. Well I guess they changed the definition of that word because the self leveling buckets they make today you have to level yourself, (except for Komatsu' and JCB). Come on John Deere, figure it out and do it.

Another good repair Frank. You stated early in the video you were using 6010 rod, later you said 7018 which I think is correct. The 7018 would be my choice for that repair as it has better properties for strength In machinery repair such as that and of course with multiple passes no underbead cracking from hydrogen As to a new backhoe? Sure it would be nice, more power, comfort, etc. the old New Holland puts more net dollars in your pocket each week you can keep her going. And honestly Frank if it wasn’t you and your meticulous attention to its maintenance and repair that machine would not be still be working as dependably as it does now.

Thanks Steve! I did use 6010 for the first pass downhill, and 7018 uphill. I like how I can dig in with the 6010, and it gives a good base for the 7018. I saw in your video you did some "vertical up" welding, I assume 7018 rod. I am a self taught welder and have yet to master this technique. Can you give me some tips? Or better yet make a video? I know it has something to do with selecting the correct amperage and I tried messing with that but still stuck at "vertical up" welding.
@Digginok6 жыл бұрын
Weld.com may have a good video on that. What I can tell you is you have to keep a shorter arc and move the rod a lot to keep the metal from “dripping “. I’m kinda self taught too, but have learned a lot from pipe welding. Generally on uphill you will need less amps, shorter arc length, move into cooler metal or weave a bit, and keep the rod pointed upward around a 30 degree angle. It’s a tough weld to make, practice!

I used to run backhoes and they have their place, but after i bought a Kubota kx121 mini excavator my hoe just sits. A 5' smooth bucket will move spoils pretty good and you can level up using the blade. If i had to pick between a hoe or mini ex , the mini would win every time. Wish i had bought one a long time ago. The ability to swing 360 and put spoils anywhere really helps. Its also easier to transport. If you had a mini excavator and a tracked skid steer you could do so much more than a backhoe.
@Digginok6 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on why you are doing, I move my hoe almost daily, so two machines seem to me to be heavier and more work to load and unload. My question is do you charge the same amount for two smaller machines as one big one? I work mostly by the hour and I can’t imagine being able to charge for 2 machines if I’m only using one. Rates here are around 100$ per hour for me. I agree the minis have their place but I haven’t seen one yet that can produce as many feet of footing as a backhoe can in a day. i think the bottom of the bracket is too honking thin. but that is hindsight. how about creating a back side cutter to carve out a groove between the inside of the pin bushings and the plate. that could be easily installed on a longer pin that you could put a drill on to spin it. various holes in this hub but at different diameters to put cutter tools in so you could use it for any of the bushings on your tractor perhaps.. this carving out the rod end side allows you to bend your welding rods and go in a weld the bushing to the plate making it much stronger.. then just grinding it flat to get your rod end back in.. if you do go to look at new or replacement equipment .. you might want to make sure this is not an issue.. i see so many videos with line boring for new oversized weld in bushings that most of the meat of the plate is cut away. carving a little at a time.. is all you need. till you have enough of a groove to weld it in and smooth it off. making the tool flip able.. its just a thought.. as is investing in a few more welding blankets to protect the rods and paintwork.. i am also taking you are going to use a mirror and check around all the other welded in pin bushings to check for cracks.

Don't know how serious you are about a new machine. But if I were you I would seriously look into a large minni ex. And a skidder. You can have those two for almost the same price as a new backhoe. I think with a little getting used to you would be surprised how much faster a 50 or 60 sized minni is than a backhoe. Just my two cents. But nice fix! And good video way to keep the old iron going.
@Digginok6 жыл бұрын
I will probably will buy used, I don’t think I could come close to the price of one backhoe with two machines. I have given it some thought. As for digging faster, I don’t think that’s true. I have worked side by side with a Deere 60 for a week diggin the same footing. I actually made more ditch than the mini did. Call me old fashioned but with the ability to level the machine, the extra reach, and more loader capacity, I’ll probably stick with the tlb. Cost of operating a backhoe is also way less in my opinion. To match the backhoes capacity I would probably need 2 12000 lbs machines, my machine weighs 17000, not sure Little Red would approve of that. Believe me I have studied the other options and I think if given the chance I would try to get into a 120 sized ex. and keep the backhoe. Bigger machine = more $ per hour. Thanks for watching!!!!
@RockCreekEnterprisesNM6 жыл бұрын
@@Digginok I have a JD 50 mini and JD 332 skid steer, each about 12000 lbs, and I agree with you the tlb is faster (especially you verses joe operator), has the ability to level, more reach and lower o&o costs. Plus you don't have to get out of one machine and climb into another only to find out you need to move the first one just a little more so you can do what you wanted to do. As for more loader capacity, I'm not so sure. I run a narrow (80") 4-1 bucket with just under 1-1/2 yard cap. No trouble filling it or lifting it to load a truck. Skid steers and minis have their place, but for what you seem to do the most of tlb is the way to go. 120 sizes ex weighs in about 26000 lbs. As long as we are dreaming of bigger machines I would love to get into a 135 size.

Thanks for understanding!!! I realize that it goes against what most people think, it has taken me a while to convince some of my customers that the backhoe is better for footings. But give 4 hours on a job and I will make a believer out of them. I’m not knocking the mini, please don’t think that, but the backhoe is where I belong!!!!
@cree54336 жыл бұрын
Digginok maybe it's that we mostly do pipe work why we see more productivity out of the minni. And that speed doesn't translate into footings? Don't know. Always cool to hear everyone's take on things. For our work when we switched to the minni from a 310 sj it was night and day faster once you got used to the change. If I ever get an excavator it would be a 120 sized, and I would keep a backhoe. Hah! My first thought was already expressed below. You keep fixing it and eventually you'll have a new one. But, speaking as an engineer, all these failures are disturbing. I don't see serious corrosion, so I can only conclude that your unit was underengineered from the start. Somebody at New Holland either didn't know their business or they intentionally cut corners to save money. I hate to come off like a hardass but these constant failures are simply not okay. Although, they make for lots of good videos, I'm sure you'd rather have a machine that did its part as well as you do yours.

Metal fatigues. Whether it's one of two bolts holding the wing on the plane you're flying in, the blades of the turbofan, or his hoe, there is going to be cracking. that was a very bad place to put jake stands and blocks, if something let go on your bucket cylinders, the bucket would roll forward and loader arms would come down fast crushing you in between, i always tack weld heavy pipes to the loader arms close to the bucket pins, with the pipes sitting tight to the floor, i keep 4 inch 3/8 wall pipe 6 feet long at hand just for these kind of jobs, i have seen welders crushed before my eyes and a welder backed over by a D8 WELL WELDING A PATCH ON THE BACK OF A FINAL DRIVE in my time in the bush camps, they think nothing will happen to them, and they dont stop and think what can move were if presser is lost, and with hydrolics with out dead man lock outs valves like used on man lifts and over head booms, things come down fast

Hello, I enjoyed your video but could not understand what you were saying much of the time. Too much machine noise. Maybe you could get a microphone or something. I am a backhoe man too (JD410D). Started out working with my dad back in the 60's. We dug a lot of Graves and had to get creative working around all those monuments. I also use a PC50 mini when things are real tight or ground conditions are bad. It's good to have both so if I were you I would keep the old NH and add a mini to your inventory. I like the way you keep your equipment greased. Many operators don't want to get grease on them so they try to ignore this important item. When you did the repair you could have scabbed some 3/8" plate over the pin boss to make sure it doesn't happen again. This connection is under designed.

Sorry you couldn’t understand me, the weld I put in should be better than the original, also at 9300 hours I’m pretty happy with the machine.
