I think Godox is reliable light ... and Profoto is equally reliable. But in 10 years time if something happen to my Profoto , I am sure I can repair and use it for another 5 years, where as Godox you may need to replace with new one and may cost same or less and get better light. I have both ; quality wise they are equal, performance and reliability wise, they are equal. Price wise Profoto is much more expensive. Would I buy Profoto over Godox? yes if I haven't tried Godox. Would I throw away sell my Profoto and switch to Godox? No, Profoto has the brand that create some confidence to clients. I like clients when they smile and not worry about the brand of my lights. You know some very high class client / celebrities will get nervous when they see brand they don't understand. Its like would you drive a Honda or Toyota to pick up Queen Elizabeth / Taylor Swift ? , even though you know Honda or Toyota maybe equally or sometime more reliable than a Porsche or Rolls Royce.

I have 2 AD300s and 1 AD100. I carry 1 AD300 & 1 AD100 in my backpack, along with my camera and 3 lens for on-location portraits. It's a great combo. * Darren - the most of the XPro triggers are interchangeable with other brands so long as you shoot in manual mode (which is all I do). It's the TTL function is why there are different triggers to the various brands.

you're partially right. Yes, you lose TTL function. And other issue is sleep. You have to press a button to wake the trigger up. And that's annoying.

I have sold all my Godox equipment, several AD400 Pro incl. all Bowens light shapers! The reason was that Godox did not trigger every time and now and then a black photo resulted. Since I would have had the best picture exactly during this release, I had to act. Since I earn money with photos I change now to Profoto. Well, for all those who are still looking for a Godox trigger suitable for Nikon, the Xpro1 can buy this for 49.-.

I’m ready to sell-off all of my GODOX kit and move to Profoto. I am ramping up my photography business….and while the Godox stuff has generally worked, there have been too many instances of misfires, inconsistent light power from shot to shot that I can not trust Godox in front of clients. I’ve tried the different channels and yes, moving into less busy channels helps with misfires… but still experience inconsistency in the actual output from shot to shot. One shot at F8 it firescorrectly, then next shot it might fire at F11 or at F2.8

Excellent video on the Profoto & Godox strobes. I'm in the Nikon system and invested in the Godox system flash system since the beginning and I am so grateful and love it. You touched on a lot of key conversations about Profoto and other similar expensive lighting systems. At the end of the day, a nice while light is what we want. It is refreshing to hear a video about this. Thank you.

I am about to do the same, Been using Profoto for 25 years and done with them, too expensive and now days Godox and Nanlite are the future. If I need Profoto for some reason, I would just rent them now.. After I bought the Giant Profoto 7B2 with battery and spent a fortune, 3 years later I needed to buy an extra battery and they do not even sell them anymore and they are too hard to find. Not to mention just the battery is more expensive than a whole Godox system. Profoto screwed up not letting people plug in a B1 while in studio, which would be a simple dummy battery solution.

Profoto reminds me of Pocket Wizard which as the market changed and less expensive but as good or better options some of which included TTL became available, Pocket Wizard was late to the TTL game and than charged ridiculous prices for triggers with way worse UIs. Not to long ago Pocket Wizard had a paid firmware update. They are still acting as if they are the only game town. Profoto is doing the same. Ignoring the market changes over the last 5-10 years that are making them irrelevant due to their size, weight, and especially pricing. They will get away with it for awhile due to the mystique the brand has. Most using Profoto do so to be seen using them and to feel like they are "real" pros or have "made it." But the reality is in the current market Profoto is way over priced and the number of photographers willing and able to pay those ridiculous prices in the current economy is for sure shrinking every year. So while they are currently riding the past brand perceptions, I really think that won't carry them forever. Profoto gear makes sense at a small premium due to the build and design and such. But not at 5+ times the price.

I'm glad that you too saw the way of the reasonably priced future. All of my lights, both studio and field are now Godox/Flashpoint and I have three triggers for my cameras. I made a gradual switch beginning almost 2 years ago. I can afford spares now, and the 2.6 ghz frequency seems almost totally devoid of interference on any channel. The communication between the lights and transmitter is rock solid. All of my GOBOs are Bowens S mount, so not too happy about needing that mount adapter either, but I haven't yet bought AD600 or Ad200 Pro lights yet either. I think I'm going to wait a year before going with them to see if they change the lights to Bowens S without a required adapter. They almost have it right, except for this. Thanks for the comparison. It helped further convince me that I made the right decision.

Thanks Darren. I just added a Godox ad 300 to my arsenal of gear. I use Einstein 640 strobes that plug in and I always wanted a battery operated light to add to the mix...I use all Pocket Wizard triggers so it took me a while to get info for a compatible trigger for Godox...I add PW plus and all seems to work. When I was beginning photography I foolishly spent way too much on a few Profoto umbrellas...they are made well but pricy....Einstein was always a great resource for repair at $50 but now that the shipping is so expensive its just not worth ordering online...my point is Im also looking around...I took the Godox on a small product shot gig and it was so great not to have to plug it into the wall. Tho the S2 mounts are metal and heavy I really love them for speedlights in addition to the ad 300...Im glad to hear you speak so well of this light...I feel better about dishing out more cash on yet another piece of equipment...thanks for a great review...Jan in NYC!

I also swapped out my two Profotos B1 for Godox flashes. Especially outdoors, the small Godox flashes with the small mount are an advantage. The small AD S85S Octabox is less than half the size of a Bowens mount light shaper. My Godox flashes have often fallen to the ground, so far they have withstood a lot of stress. I don't need tons of different light shapers, I just need the right ones for the job. I can only recommend the whole system and only use it for my shootings. You can see many examples of this on my channel. Unfortunately only in German.

The biggest disadvantage to the AD300 Pro is the mounting system to the stand. The knob is tiny and the tension is VERY low for what it should be. Using larger modifiers can really tax the mount and it can dip down. I'd like to see Godox come up with an optional mount with a stronger system that can secure the flash. I actually use some Pro Foto modifiers with my AD300 Pro. I love it. They are extremely light and compact. BUT the Pro Foto adapters for the AD300 Pro make it a big bulky for transport.. All that said, I'm a huge Godox/Flashpoint fan... I have 6 AD600 Pros and 2 AD300. It's a great affordable system and as Darren says, if something breaks... it doesn't break the bank.. ;) Thanks Darren for a very insightful review.

such a great video, i;'ve been using profoto for the last 10 years and love it, the b1 is my current workhorse but if that breaks, an ad300pro would be more cost efficient than repairing my b1. I did get the ad100pro for my aquarium macro photos, it works well but it does have a colour shift which is annoying. i've semi corrected this with the gel. But when the time comes, it'll most likely be godox. the profoto softboxes are quite annoying to set up, i use 3rd party ones that are pop up open and works well. thanks for the great video and until the next one!

Hi Darren, I use the Godox system myself (Pixapro UK Branded) and it has been great. From speedlites to the big 1200 pro we have a ton of options. A few people I know alays talk about Profoto providing a better quality of light, better moidifiers , more consistent light. Not so sure myself but not had any real hands on time with Profoto and don't feel the need to. The only advantages Profoto brings to my mind are. 1. Lighter wallet - not really an advantage lol 2. Rental houses will most likely have them VS Godox.

Great video. I’ve drawn the same conclusion, Godox v Elinchrom having just bought my first AD200 it’s way smaller, more convenient to use quickly and a fraction of the price of my Elinchrom Quadra’s - and as you say, modifiers also are way cheaper. Wish I had now gone Godox for the studio rather than the ELC’s I spent £3k on! … amazed at the quality and intuitive control of Godox - unbelievable at that price point … wireless trigger is better than Elinchrom and £60 v £250!

The AD360 are several years old and the batteries still hold a charge like day one. I did have to order new bulbs for the AD360 after 2 years of use and now keep a spare for both models on hand. I will say updating the firmware is not easy or fun. Also, I have heard/read that Godox support is not good but I haven't had a need to call them. I was initially going to buy Profoto or Elincrom lights but kept reading such great things about Godox and with the money saved, I was able to buy several modifiers, high end light stands and hand-painted canvas backdrops. I’m also a wedding photographer. One reason I left flashpoint and went to ProFoto, is the ProFoto systems simply went off much more consistently with the heavy use of a wedding reception and dance floor coverage. Especially the speed lights. The A1 is far superior to V1. My question for you does the AD300 have an option for using AC power? I don’t want the frustration of changing out batteries in the middle of reception if I don’t have to. That’s one of the main reasons I’ve held onto my Profoto D2 lights. I can power them at wall outlets at the wedding reception, and have no concern about battery the whole night.

Hi Darren - that is the one argument I've heard for Profoto - that it is built better and will last longer. To me though, I could buy a new Flashpoint every 2 years for 10 years and it would be the same price as the Profoto - if it does break early just buy a new one - so what. Also, after 10 years there will be new and better lights to get. Also you should get the Glow S2 Round Flash S-Type Bowens Mount Bracket to use Bowens modifiers - it is better than the other one you are using and has a more robust tilting mechanism - it's like $25. This bracket also works for the Godox V1 round flash - that you might have for wedding work so it has a double use case.

Whats the point of profotos outlasting everything if they don’t support cameras from the past 2 years. Whats odd is that canon doesn’t need to update the firmware for its native radio triggers everytime a new camera comes out. I thought once profoto reverse engineered the particular protocol, that was it.

Godox HHS TTL support for the Canon R5/R6 has been broken for over a year and no updates have been issued for it nor has there been any indication that it will be fixed anytime soon. They are not 100% compatible with the R5/R6. I own two AD200's and wanted to get a 300 but I can't in good conscience. If you attempt to use HSS and TTL the moment you get above the sync speed of 1/200 a full power flash will be the result. The only work arounds are use HSS with Manual flash power OR use a ND filter to keep the shutter speed under 1/200 so you don't have to use HSS. Tried the X2 standard trigger and the Pro trigger and neither work.

Great review, Darren! And I think at 5:09, you sum it up perfectly. Many Profoto users spend so much money on their gear that they wouldn't dare look elsewhere at a cheaper brand. I believe there are two reasons for this: 1. Exploring outside of Profoto would be a waste of time because Profoto users believe nothing that sells at a quarter of the price of Profoto gear could be better quality. 2. Exploring outside of Profoto would lead to a level of great disappointment if brands such as Godox, are proven to provide equal (or better) quality. I personally believe that Profoto might be more durable over the long run, but the creative results are indistinguishable. Also, even if you have to replace a Godox strobe once or twice in a 12 year period, you're probably still saving money when compared to Profoto gear. Also, it might no be the worst thing in the world to update your strobes every 5 - 10 years. Strobes are are very sophisticated these days, and a simple firmware update isn't always sufficient. For instance, most strobes that were produced after the Profoto B1, are much lighter in weight - that's a hardware improvement. Godox has appeared to master this ergonomic feature. Godox has already killed off the Bowens brand, by offering the same lighting quality at budget prices. Profoto, might be their next victim.

tbh, even that perceived reliability difference is probably not real. I've used 3 600J Godox studio heads for 8 years and they've never missed a beat (and I take these to rental studios as I need to guarantee the lights will work, and have a decently low flash duration etc). My Godox-made Lencarta Safari II 600J location light - also about 6 years old, is also bullet proof - and has a plug swappable radio module - so now fitted with the 2.4Ghz radio - it's fully compatible with the new X-Pro triggers. This thing has been dropped, dragged through mud, rained on and still works just fine. My AD200's are only 2 years old, but also working just fine. My money is on Elinchrom next - and then Profoto :-/ (mind you, having seen the Godox P2400 pack - maybe you're right: this looks to be aimed squarely at the Profoto Pro-11)

I do have the same thoughts. My air remote ttl just broke with the same failure as many has experienced, the lockpin got stuck, material failure was the reason inside it. And the price to get a new one, not right at all. So i started to look at Godox, i will get almost 4 AD300 for one B10 and as you say, if the transmitter breaks, well i just get a new with low cost. I really love my Profoto gears, it works magical and gives me the best of light but the pricing is just not good for a small company as mine, economics say, leave the Profotos and go Godox.

economically Godox is the best. If you want to compete on price, give discounts to clients and yet produce beautiful images, then Godox is the right choice. Profoto is more for higher end photographers that have clients that don't mind to pay extra. Quality wise (quality of light) Godox and Profoto they are almost equal. It is mind-blowing to see a $300 light can match $2000 light. But I will just keep my Profoto for my client that pay me extra. I just added few more Godox.

I am a semi professional photographer, but I am the guy who wants the most for their money. So I first started with the Godox ad200 with great success. The more I learned the more I needed more power on those real sunny days. So I picked up the ad600 for right under $500. Even though the ad300 is nice and compact, for the same price or a little bit more the ad600 is double the power. Godox makes some great products but their prices can be a little ass backwards with their newest products. The ad100 is $300 and the ad200 is $300. Me I want the most for my money. But I know the pro versions are smaller and have a faster recycle time. So I know that it means it should cost more. Bite I still try to get the most out of my money. Great video as always, love the channel.

people are getting played with Profoto. To pay 2600$ for a 500w B1x when I can get a godox 600w for for 800$ ( I took a non TTL one since I only shoot in manual for 100$ cheaper) means I can buy 3 of these for the price of an outdated B1x with no firmware updates (don't know if they resolved that issue since this video) I don't get it. you truly pay for the name. only advantage I can see ever so slightly is it might be more user friendly but the godox ad600pro is not bad to handle at all

Yeah... I just dumped all my Elinchrom stuff for Godox. I can trigger Godox speedlights, monolights, AD300, etc. all with the same transmitter, OR with the speedlight itself! The Elinchrom Quadra Ranger was a great 400WS kit, but doesn't offer HSS, needs an adapter to mount regular Elinchrom modifiers, and a replacement Li-ion battery pack is $500! Rebuilding the old battery packs with off-the-shelf lead acid cells is dirt cheap, but then you get hardly any full power pops from a battery pack and trickle charging takes forever. The flash industry seems to have split into Godox, Yongnuo, & Phottix on one side and Profoto, Broncolor, Elinchrom, & Hensel on the other. Buyers either want good value, or they want cost-is-no-object Swedish/Swiss/German manufacture. Middle of the road brands like Dynalite, Balcar, Bowens, Speedotron, Norman, Photogenic, & Novatron are either dead or seem to be nearly so. And what the heck is up with Elinchrom's 7mm umbrella shaft diameter standard? This drove me nuts!

the AD300 is 200Ws less powerful than the B1 so it's not the best comparison but if the 300 size works for your use case then I say more power to yah. Honestly though the AD300pro is barely more powerful than the AD200pro so it's not exactly worth the extra money to get the 300pro. I saw a real world comparison between the AD200pro and the AD300Pro and the AD300pro was only 1/10th of a stop faster than the AD200pro. The AD400pro was a lot better than both of them by at least a full stop. The best deal going right now is the AD600BM (non TTL version) it's selling for under $500 or you can get a full package with a bunch of accessories on amazon for around $550. If you don't need TTL thats the way to go I think plus it doesn't seem to have the same reports of battery issues as the pro versions.

Sadly all manufacturers discontinue support with their products in time. I have several EF mount lenses now that Canon will not even look at. In fact, my Canon EF 500F4, at $7,000 at time of purchase requires an independent repairer *if I can find one*. FWIW I have both a Xplor 600 Pro and the Xplor 300 Pro for outdoor work. Build quality on the transceivers are questionable. The soft plastic shield on the XPro 2 will scratch very easily and be careful with the battery door as it likes to fall off never to be found again or broken by a shoe unknowingly. I have a piece of gaffer tape holding the door in place in case it wants to abandon ship.

I agree with most of this, my only issue is the b1x is a current offering and why Profoto hasn’t updated it to be compatible with the r6 is very strange to me, otherwise you make a logical argument. The xpro triggers are cheap, but they get the job done and for $69, I’ll put up with inferior build quality for 1/5th the price.

Thanks for the wonderful video. As a Profoto user, I'm switching over to Godox too. As mentioned by you, I have the same exact pet peeve with the company. Getting replacement parts takes forever and I'm on the verge of giving up. Bought a Godox AD400 whilst waiting for my Profoto replacement and I'm in love with their range of Godox mount softbox which is so small and compact. Getting a AD300 later this week and my Profoto replacement is still not here yet despite waiting for 2 months. Considering the price that Profoto is charging, I expected better customer service from them. If they don’t buck up and rethink their pricing strategy, they are gonna be like Bowens which is now acquired by Godox.

Hi Darren, the problem with ad300's is that both standard Godox reflectors for ad300 are bad and don't give out much light, also Marcus Pix found that the ad300 has a blue-green color cast, maybe they fixed this now, but I am interesting did you see this blue-green tint? What reflector do you use for the ad300 to extract the maximum amount of light from it and what reflector do you use with the umbrella, if of course you use an umbrellas at all.

Now, I'm one of these people that keep a camera till it falls apart. I do not upgrade more than once every 9 or 10 years. However, plan to make the jump to mirrorless soon. If the Nikon Z9 is everything it's cracked up to be I'll invest in that. My issue? If there are compatibility issues with the Z9 and my B1 series lights I'm going to be pissed!

We recently decided to dump all of our Profoto kit in favour of Godox, to date we have saved a small fortune, and Godox have been very reliable with no issues. I appreciate the quality of construction may not be as durable, but the saving and durability of Godox is first class. £350 for a profoto trigger, thats obscene, so goodbuy profot.

Het Darren! It's been a minute since we last spoke. Several years actually (Jog the memory: Nikon 200mm f2 vs. Sigma 135mm). I'll get back to that conversation in a moment. I picked up my first strobe of my short hobbyist career (Godox) because it was on sale and noticed that the 300 WS flashes are now on sale making them almost the same price as the 200s. So I had a question for you on them. I do not anticipate doing real estate at the moment but heard the handle that attaches to the C-Stand is "flimsy" on the 300s with a modifier. Also, for Bowens mount (have a Cheetah stand softbox), you need a bowens mount ring. Now that you've used this light for 2 years, any thoughts? BTW: I purchased the 200mm f2 because I found someone that didn't want theirs anymore and made me an offer I couldn't refuse (nearly same price as the 135mm f1.8 PLENA). Love everything about that lens except the weight (and distance to subject). That said, I take it everywhere and shoot everything with it . Quick question on stands: Have the impact Turtle based C-Stand for outside. Was looking to eventually get a Matthews Hollywood Baby Jr Triple Riser for inside (albeit also expensive). Any recommendations or thoughts? Hope you and the family are doing well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Good to catch up!.
