For the love of the art should at least be enough. They're partially afraid that it won't live up to the hype. They made the hype by not making a sequel. It won't be a repeat of Mass Effect 3 if they have a great story and a well polished game. Just excuses. If they don't want to work on it how about selling the license to another developer. Easy to solve. Valve is almost too big to fail, even if HL3 didn't quite live up to the hype, Steam alone will recoup any revenue lost, remember Steam Machines? Hell even if they don't want to or can't release HL3, at least finish the story even if it's a web series or a comic. It's infuriating to not have a finished story.

I hope so too, but I think Marc Laidlaw, the first writer to leave Valve, cryptically claimed that "no work was done on HL3 since he was there", if I understood him correctly. Then, two more writers also left, probably for the same reason too. Valve hasn't really focused on single-player games since Portal 2 and more so on multiplayer games and writers don't usually have a place in that.

@ Liam Tillett I don't really have any faith in triple A developers these day as they're plagued with problems, but it may as well be the only solution for now. However, I think Valve would rather just sit on the IP of HL than do anything else with it. They just don't seem to care anymore which is sad. Back then, they were really close to the community but I guess when that hacker leaked the first version of HL2, Valve has been aloof and did not make any E3 presentations whatsoever in the last couple of years.

Here's what they need to do: 1. Hire back the writer. If He doesn't want to do it, get another talented writer who is a fan of the games to write the story. 2. Don't make it a prequel or set it far in the future or different protagonist/different story set during the main story. Continue from the end of ep. 2 with all the main characters. Don't pull a Disney and make a shitty spin-off. 3. Keep its development a secrete and announce it right before you release it. That way the hype won't be dead by the time it's out. I think if you factor in all those points you could at least make it fairly decent. It might not live up to the hype created over the years, but just as long as it lives up to its predecessors and concludes the story beautifully, then yes, they should make HL3.

I loved the story and I would love to know how it would end. However what I enjoyed much more was the game feel. It felt so much less arcadish than other games. I miss the feel of the game the realism and wish to see how it would look and feel in 2019+ I would be happy with a Half-Life inspire 2020 FPS that keeps the mechanics and builds upon it's spirit.

Most people work on VR because that's what's new and interesting. The 5 programmers who work on TF2 do it because they want to and that is something I truly appreciate. When I say that the company as a whole doesn't care, I mean that most of the people who work there are more interested in different projects (as I said, VR is the new interesting thing), so TF2 is left with 5 programmers who, while they are doing their best working on the upcoming pyro update, are just too few people.

I'm gonna say it, Half Life will always have a place in my heart. As you said, there is just this sense of charm to the whole series that no other series has been able to replicate. I have so many fond memories of this series, so many fun hours spent with my friends on this series. It (Half Life Source) even was my first FPS. Half Life and Portal will always be games I will return to, and I will keep loyal to these franchises, for the sake of the beautiful hours and memories they have brought me.

Half Life 1 was used to show that you can tell a story thorough a game. Half Life 2 kept the story part, and then showed you can use creative physics in games. Half Life 3 will show people how revolutionary VR is, when their VR systems are finally completely done (They look done, but there will be another one better than what they're selling right now). This probably won't be for a couple more years, then the game won't be developed a couple years after that. So we've wait, and we'll have to continue waiting, but it will be here, eventually...

That's a good idea. Because of the hype of half life 3, many members in valve feel pressured and stopped working on it. If we forget about it, they'd be more likely to work on it and surprise us. Because Valve's quality on games is best resulted from those who are motivated enough to do them. I am pretty sure a lot of workers are put off by the pressure, I am sure a lot of people here would anyways. Also Devs like surprising players so why not.

They don't really force their workers to constantly update a game and some can pull out of it if they want to, for example: TF2's team is narrowed down to 4 people (or less) maintaining it now while the rest moved on to other projects they feel better towards.
