This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.
www.gatesnotes...
Climate Change is just too much. There is never any good news. Only graphs that get more and more red and angry. Almost every year breaks some horrible record, from the harshest heat waves to the most rapid Glacier melt. It’s endless and relentless.
We have known for decades that rapid Climate Change is being caused by the release of Greenhouse Gases. But instead of reducing them, in 2019 the world was emitting 50% more CO2 than in the year 2000. And emissions are still rising. Why is that? Why is it so hard to just stop emitting these gases?

it may sound morbid, but the covid-19 crisis... kinda (numbers not very much not so clear) helped the number to stop growing for a while.. The shit still rising up and the effects the constant pumping of co2 have started to show, (which in effect, it also gave some motivation to some companies, not great but better late than ever i guess.) but yes, as morbid as it sound, the pandemic gave us just a bit of time. . Two new variants called "lambda" and the stupid but cleverly named "Delta plus" just showed up in the world, which that it still could help us in some way despite still being a tragedy.. But that doesn't mean that we need to depend on these virus to take the people out, we still need to act out before the population starts rising up again (which, yeah it will rise up sooner or later.) and pressure the companies to act faster..

@@CSR_mufc Exactly. But its not really the amount of kids that are being born. Birth rates are actually declining. The problem is that people are living longer lives because of the new and improved health care systems. People are living (and wanting to live) longer. And, I'm sorry, but this is greedy. Taking resources away from the younger generation so older ones can live is crude and stupid.

Ok so I'm going to guess that they're a few oil companies in that top 100. You can't run a modern economy without oil, including the feeding the population part. Without oil you have one modern agriculture and the vast majority of people starves. Is that a viable solution? Saying things like "but the top 100 companies" is counter productive because it's too big, ill-defined and you can't disentangle the parts we could make positive change from the parts we need to live.

It's just consumerism blaming the people for their byproduct. They emit so much more so let's stop buying from them and just reduce their footprint. Or we can regulate and stop them from being a business all together. Gas powered is just forced on us to keep those in power rich. We wanna have people trade in their car for a replacement that is modern and highly invested in keeping it green. The gov can work with car companies and have them scrap and recycle all those cars for new cars. But that just seems like it's be too much work for them, but if it's for a profit they'll make the sea part and move mountains for that extra penny

I was being taught about the effects of climate change in the 90's and how we would need to do X,Y & Z. nearly 30 years on and we still need to do X,Y & Z. Idk know what X, Y, and Z are, but I do know that most ways people have come up with for solving climate change are too ham-fisted. We can not change our methods of transportation and power generation in a day nor in generations. Hell, we still can't generate green power efficiently. Solar only gets 1% of the energy it absorbs turned into power, Hydro (which one would think would be easy to implement) can cause massive ecological damage (and isn't that what we are trying to solve at the end of the day?), Wind can't generate enough power to effectively replace our current system, and Nuclear scares the hell out of people and still develops waste that is radioactive (which causes ecological damage). Personally, I believe that if we invest into making new technology to solve the problem. For example, our batteries store next to no energy for what seems like no length of time. If we made a battery the size of a Phone battery that could last a year we would be able to half our need for fossil fuels. Also if we made ways of generating nuclear power that eats its own waste so that we do not need to worry about the radioactive waste (because it is another process's fuel). I do agree we can right now do things better, but isn't that true for everything? And haven't we done lots better today than 30 years ago? We have moved from coal to natural gas which has slashed our emissions by a load. We have an active effort to reuse and recycle things rather than just throwing them away. So in short, I think you are cutting humanity short on how well we have done with climate change, which while not the best and is still a problem, is notably less than it was 30 years ago.

Bees and butterflies are in a lot of trouble. If you dig up some lawn in a sunny area and replace with flowers that would help them a lot. I recommend butterfly bush, butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, coneflower, black eyed Susan, zinnias, yarrow, sedum, spirea, fennel, dill, and parsley. A year ago, I put in a 50 gallon preformed pond ($50 at Menards) and put in a few pond plants (water lily, water iris, and water lettuce). It has attracted birds, frogs, lizards, and dragonflies. No pump or filter is needed. I do have to bail out mosquitoes larva, but that is quick and easy. If you buy seeds for birdhouse gourds you can grow and make your own birdhouses. Just punch a hole for the birds to get in and shake out the seeds, punch some small drainage holes at the bottom, and punch holes at the top to run wire or string through to hang. If you have a chain link fence in a sunny area, I recommend growing trailing blackberries. You can buy one plant and the root system will spread and you will have several more plants in two years. The bees love the flowers.

Nuclear is expensive and time consuming to construct. Financially, it takes a long time to see profit from the investment. Investors naturally want to make money now, not 15 years from now. And that's where I'd wish my country Germany would have done things different. After the Fukushima disaster, we bailed out of nuclear energy. But as our push for renewables was and is still not advanced enough to replace nuclear (and maybe never will), we upped energy production in our coal-burning power plants. With this we also took away the chance for technological advances in nuclear energy. I'd like politicians to sometimes stand their ground and do what's best and not what pleases the people most. Nuclear is the energy option with least deaths per kilowatt by far. And with advancements in reactor technology, there are now reactors running - so called breeder reactors - that can burn the waste of a normal reactors in a way that what's left has a half-life of about 50 years rather than a few 10000. Unfortunately not in my country.

I've been telling this to practically everyone I know: nuclear energy needs to remain and grow in the future. Unfortunately, government and power companies have different ideas. Heck, I found out not too long ago that Exelon is gonna shut down four major nuclear plants in IL the next two years. If that comes to fruition (which it likely will), then more dependency will be funneled to other renewables (which is a great thing, but those won't be as dependable as nuclear), all because the ROI of a nuclear plant takes much more time than plopping down some solar panels or continuing to help coal.
@theamici

I call this nuclear fetishism. The arguments against nuclear are pretty strong: 1) it takes too much time to make, like ridiculous amounts of time sometimes, 2) takes up too much capital for a single project, so there's not enough room to make other investments meanwhile and if the investment doesn't make a return on profit this could be very harmful, 3) is a single point of failure if something goes wrong (and it can hurt an entire society when things do go wrong in multiple ways), this includes when the project itself goes wrong by simple mismanagement, natural disasters that we cannot predict, wars where the enemy can destroy a single power-plant and then leave vast areas without electricity Nuclear is a stupid solution, imo. Expensive, tiresome, risky.

As a pro-nuclear guy, the main problem is that we can't make the whole world run on fission. This doesn't work. It can definitely be used more widely though, there is still room. To be fair, the future of humanity is pretty much on fusion. You talked about ROI, and indeed it's a key indicator. If fusion doesn't work, we have 2 choices: massive CO2 emissions, or massive economic slowdown, because our economy is directly linked to our energy consumption. And boy, these renewable energies sure are cute, but the ROI is dogshit (except for hydraulic, but not a lot of countries have the geographic features allowing this).

A MAJOR unidentified problem is politics, here in the U.S the Democrat's and Republicans keep on arguing on a solution to climate change. I'm personally a Democrat but that doesn't mean my party can just blame it on the other and not do anything about it. All what will happen in the end is that more arguing for a solution to the problem but no solution ever does come. Plus! even if one party does win the election and does change and fight global warming 9 times out of ten if the other party gets elected they will just tear down everything that the other party tried to do and blame them as wrong and there party didn't do anything but say there party will fix it but ether same will happen to them or they will flat out lie and blame the other.

If it is hard for us in 2020 to change our primary energy source with all the human resources and technology we now have imagine how difficult it would be in 1950 to improve life quality without fossil fuels.

As a biomedical researcher I have recently read about research which tries to combat plastic waste pollution through directed evolution. Directed evolution is a process where proteins are changed in the laboratory over and over again to become much more efficient to do certain things. In this case, scientists are trying to make PET-digesting enzymes more effective in digesting plastic waste and they are actually quite successful (I'm planning a video about that if you are interested). Although this is only a tiny part of the overall solution, I think that innovative research might save us from the current climate change crisis!
@ThaFlowzer
@ThaFlowzer 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i read that too. This might be more of a curse than a blessing however. Plastics are used extremely commonly exactly because it does not get degraded by bacteria. If this would not be the case plastic might become far less useful, imagine your computer or telephone falling apart and those are just small things. It might not be smart playing god with evolution.

If Covid taught us one thing, it’s that when the world directs its focus and resources to a solution, you can come up with an amazing solution like the vaccine in a short amount of time. Imagine what we could do if we put the same energy into other issues. We can do this! We just have to care enough and pour our hearts into it and we will shock ourselves at our own potential

@@ezeola6348 Not even remotely. There is no binding amount that has to be donated to be part of the Paris climate agreement. All it was is a commitment to keep climate change below a certain level. And a communication framework and how to do that. Not to mention, no -one was expecting the US to fund everything. That's just some BS Donald comes out with to justify whatever treaty he's pulled out of. Not to mention, climate change is not just an issue of environmental damage. It's an economic issue which will cost the world trillions of dollars if we let it get out of hand. Kind of like covid, the more it gets out of hand, the most it was cost to get it under control. The best thing (from both a financial and human perspective) is to go hard on dealing with it now before it gets out of control. But just like covid, idiotic, populist leaders like Donald fucking Trump will ignore and deny the problem. Until major, damaging, expensive policies will be required to bring us back from the brink of disaster. if you care about money (or the people of this planet) deal with it now!
