KZbin's ad choice is strange. Their ads are contradictory to the content in the video. For example, on debunking videos I get ads about 5G conspiracies and I get ads from fossil fuel companies on videos about climate change. I don't know why KZbin's choice of ads are so contradictory.

@@northernskies86 It’s the algorithm that selects the ads is pooling all related terms to the video title (I.e climate change, oil, global warming, petrol / 5G, radio towers, radiation, conspiracy theory) and is failing to filter out the good ads from all the shit. Or it’s actually completely pre determined by KZbin and the powers that be behind the corporate behemoth that is Google. With how the world is right now, I don’t know which one is true anymore

As a biomedical researcher I have recently read about research which tries to combat plastic waste pollution through directed evolution. Directed evolution is a process where proteins are changed in the laboratory over and over again to become much more efficient to do certain things. In this case, scientists are trying to make PET-digesting enzymes more effective in digesting plastic waste and they are actually quite successful (I'm planning a video about that if you are interested). Although this is only a tiny part of the overall solution, I think that innovative research might save us from the current climate change crisis!
@ThaFlowzer
@ThaFlowzer 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i read that too. This might be more of a curse than a blessing however. Plastics are used extremely commonly exactly because it does not get degraded by bacteria. If this would not be the case plastic might become far less useful, imagine your computer or telephone falling apart and those are just small things. It might not be smart playing god with evolution.

it may sound morbid, but the covid-19 crisis... kinda (numbers not very much not so clear) helped the number to stop growing for a while.. The shit still rising up and the effects the constant pumping of co2 have started to show, (which in effect, it also gave some motivation to some companies, not great but better late than ever i guess.) but yes, as morbid as it sound, the pandemic gave us just a bit of time. . Two new variants called "lambda" and the stupid but cleverly named "Delta plus" just showed up in the world, which that it still could help us in some way despite still being a tragedy.. But that doesn't mean that we need to depend on these virus to take the people out, we still need to act out before the population starts rising up again (which, yeah it will rise up sooner or later.) and pressure the companies to act faster..

@@CSR_mufc Exactly. But its not really the amount of kids that are being born. Birth rates are actually declining. The problem is that people are living longer lives because of the new and improved health care systems. People are living (and wanting to live) longer. And, I'm sorry, but this is greedy. Ok so I'm going to guess that they're a few oil companies in that top 100. You can't run a modern economy without oil, including the feeding the population part. Without oil you have one modern agriculture and the vast majority of people starves. Is that a viable solution? Saying things like "but the top 100 companies" is counter productive because it's too big, ill-defined and you can't disentangle the parts we could make positive change from the parts we need to live.

I want to point out that when people find ways to use energy more efficiently it often leads to throwing out older, less energy-efficient products. Both the manufacture of the new products and the transportation of the older products are carbon-intensive. A huge carbon expense that needs to be addressed is that of product processing. If I went to the store and bought canned fruit, they often say that they're grown in a South American country, but packaged in an East Asian country (usually China). Let's say they're from Venezuela - they go over 25000 miles, and over 3 months on the ship. It'd be FAR more efficient in terms of fuel and carbon to pack them in a nearby area.

Ironically, fossil fuels contain trace amounts of radioactive particles (because everything does) and when you burn it, these particles go strait up the chimney and out into the atmosphere. A coal/gas plant dumps more radioactive fallout into its surrounding environment in a week that a modern nuclear reactor of comparable output does in its entire commissioned life.

I was being taught about the effects of climate change in the 90's and how we would need to do X,Y & Z. nearly 30 years on and we still need to do X,Y & Z. I'm not sure the ones in power want to change and I feel sorry for the generations below mine, they'll have to clear up the mess the generations above leave behind.

Idk know what X, Y, and Z are, but I do know that most ways people have come up with for solving climate change are too ham-fisted. We can not change our methods of transportation and power generation in a day nor in generations. Hell, we still can't generate green power efficiently. Solar only gets 1% of the energy it absorbs turned into power, Hydro (which one would think would be easy to implement) can cause massive ecological damage (and isn't that what we are trying to solve at the end of the day?), Wind can't generate enough power to effectively replace our current system, and Nuclear scares the hell out of people and still develops waste that is radioactive (which causes ecological damage). Personally, I believe that if we invest into making new technology to solve the problem. For example, our batteries store next to no energy for what seems like no length of time. If we made a battery the size of a Phone battery that could last a year we would be able to half our need for fossil fuels. Also if we made ways of generating nuclear power that eats its own waste so that we do not need to worry about the radioactive waste (because it is another process's fuel). I do agree we can right now do things better, but isn't that true for everything? And haven't we done lots better today than 30 years ago? We have moved from coal to natural gas which has slashed our emissions by a load. We have an active effort to reuse and recycle things rather than just throwing them away. So in short, I think you are cutting humanity short on how well we have done with climate change, which while not the best and is still a problem, is notably less than it was 30 years ago.

Of course some of those alternatives are just too taugh for some people, but we could be getting used to them gradually, I guess.

Artificial intelligence assistants running the plants and safety protocols, updated security measures. Overall the biggest reason we aren't using it is because of A) Making Nuclear Warheads and B) Big Oil would rather get more money destroying the world instead of creating a diverse investment portfolio. Honestly the ability of humans to seek destruction never ceases to amaze me, but we can always hope for a greener and brighter future

People don't want to fight climate change. In my small village (150 residents) a solar farm was planned. It should have been located on an unused strip of land directly at the highway. It was expected to tripple the villages budget due to taxes. But as soon as these plans were revealed a group of people brought the whole village to fight against it. Now we still have a huge strip of land directly at the highway that nobody will ever use or look at, the small school will be closed and the 40 year old fire engine won't be replaced any time soon.

Bees and butterflies are in a lot of trouble. If you dig up some lawn in a sunny area and replace with flowers that would help them a lot. I recommend butterfly bush, butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, coneflower, black eyed Susan, zinnias, yarrow, sedum, spirea, fennel, dill, and parsley. A year ago, I put in a 50 gallon preformed pond ($50 at Menards) and put in a few pond plants (water lily, water iris, and water lettuce). It has attracted birds, frogs, lizards, and dragonflies. No pump or filter is needed. I do have to bail out mosquitoes larva, but that is quick and easy. If you buy seeds for birdhouse gourds you can grow and make your own birdhouses. Just punch a hole for the birds to get in and shake out the seeds, punch some small drainage holes at the bottom, and punch holes at the top to run wire or string through to hang. If you have a chain link fence in a sunny area, I recommend growing trailing blackberries. You can buy one plant and the root system will spread and you will have several more plants in two years. The bees love the flowers.

@@spillarge at least in Arizona, there is an incentive to use solar power. You’re able to install them for free for outdated meters and your energy bill goes way down. As far as electric cars, you don’t have to pay for gas or anything like that. Govts. have to incentivize vehicles by say, trading in your vehicle for scrap for a buyout of its net worth so you could be incentivized to trade it in for an electric car. It’s also a sociological problem, but people don’t like nuclear power just because of things like Chernobyl, 3 mile island and Fukushima. More stable nuclear power is available in the form of isotopes like thorium, and the move away from uranium and plutonium is possible. It’s all cheaper than the alternative with fossil fuels, just not incentivized.

I would like to address a misconception about the safety of nuclear power plants. Many people believe they are unsafe and dangerous. Nuclear power generation causes thousands of times fewer deaths than coal and oil do. Nuclear accidents are nigh on impossible now due to the strict regulations implemented after the previous nuclear disasters. Even when an accident occurs, fewer people die than you may think. Chernobyl death estimates range from just a few hundred to about 60,000 at the most. Fukushima killed one person from radiation exposure. Compare this to global annual flu deaths which the WHO estimates at 250 000 - 500 000. Nuclear power is extremely safe and, I believe, necessary to our goal of reaching carbon neutrality. Edit: oh yeah and do check out Kurzgesagt's awesome series on nuclear power 😂

Fun contradicting fact: Burning waste in facilities designed for it actually reduces carbon emissions indirectly. Think of it this way. There are a few reasons for this, first they have special filters in the chimneys to remove all that nasty SO2, NO2, NO and other greenhouse gases that have a much greater impact on global warming. Another thing is that these plants can and should be designed for energy reclaim, meaning they save some energy we would normally waste when we just yeet the "garbage" on to a landfill, therefore reducing the need for burning coal or gas. Furthermore, the waste we throw on landfills gets decomposed and turned into CH4 which is also a much higher impact greenhouse gas and even though you can put pipes to collect it, much of it is wasted before a high enough concentration is achieved to be viable enough for use. This means they let the natural gas(CH4) escape through the pipes in the atmosphere for the first few months before they get to those sweeet few months for use in power generation and then again letting it loose. Source: I finished my bachelor in Environmental Engineering in Zagreb, Croatia. Hope you enjoyed ;D Edit: I hope I am not the only one that writes bacchelor with 2 c's in it... Added some more info about landfill gas reclamation. Edit 2: People: We need to reduce carbon emissions. Engineers: Lets build specialised buildings to make use of waste. People: EEEEEEEEWWWWWWW, THAT SMELLS... HELL NO! Engineers: But...but... People: Nah fam, aint having that near my house. Engineers: Do nothing. Global warming continues. 6:08 I would really love it if you could do a video on the Passivhaus standard. Most modern insulation has really limited effectiveness owing to air loss and conduction in the building's structure, and so heating and air conditioning are some of the most massive wastages our society has at the moment. I firmly believe that shifting new builds to passivhaus design is the most impactful and easily achievable improvement our society can make. By building its structure around the insulation, almost any building can be designed to regulate it's own temperature using only a tiny energy budget, considerably less than a couple of solar panels would provide. The only problem with passivhaus is that it tends to be done on a relatively small scale, but educating people about it, particularly architects, engineers and governments, could really help change that. Sorry for the slight ramble/sales pitch. I'm not associated with any company but I love your videos and I think they could make a real difference.

One concern that I hope new tech has overcome: back in the 80s and 90s, we did start making houses more airtight to reduce energy wastage due to leaks. The problem that then popped up was Sick Building Syndrome. Essentially, nasty molds started growing in houses and buildings due to a lack of outside airflow. So a quick question: does this "Passivhaus Standard" address that issue?

@@smarty1312 nuclear waste is minuscule compared to the waste generated by all other means of energy production INCLUDING solar and wind which generate a ton of dangerous waste during their manufacturing process. Plus the nuclear waste can be reused. Of-course with diminishing returns but with more funds put into nuclear energy means more research which means more and more of the fuel gets used meaning the nuclear waste becomes less harmful every time. I mean theoretically you could reduce nuclear waste to hydrogen by splitting an atom to the smallest possible thing but of-course every time it gets smaller the more energy it takes to split it and the less energy to get out of it but still.

Nuclear is expensive and time consuming to construct. Financially, it takes a long time to see profit from the investment. Investors naturally want to make money now, not 15 years from now. Farmers in industrialized countries only grow that much because they can sell it. Corn (maize) is often sold to livestock producers as feed for the animals. A given amount of corn could feed six times as many people as when it is used to feed chickens. Much of the energy in the corn is lost as waste heat through the metabolic processes of the animal and is used to make parts of the animal that are often discarded like bones and feathers. You could feed way more people with maize than with chickens raised on maize. However farmers only grow as much maize as they do because they can sell it to livestock producers, junk food manufacturers (think high fructose corn syrup and flamin hot Cheetos etc), and ethanol producers. This in turn gives the farmers money to feed their own families. Corn could be just given to hungry people in the developing world for free but farmers would never grow the corn in the first place if they didn’t get paid to do it. If you were to redistribute the food someone would have to buy it first and then give it to the hungry. People in the industrialized world would likely be opposed to increasing their taxes to pay for feeding people in other countries. Not to mention the corn shipped to the hungry would reduce the global supply of corn for other things like meat production and snacks which would raise the price of those things and in turn make people in the industrialized countries angry. The reason we suck at distributing it is because it’s complicated and there would be a cost to just giving it to the hungry

Chickens produce eggs and cows produce milk, so I'd say using corn and grain as feed for them is a good use for it. I understand the value in providing it to impoverished peoples as a substitute and staple however. I think a big issue in the way of wider food distribution is that it's still a time-sensitive, and resource exhaustive matter. Food expires, and the means to prevent it aren't necessarily cheap or easy. As to farmers simply giving away the grain they've produced for free, I'm sure we could agree that it'd be a rediculous plan ethics wise. However, surely a governmental or intergovernmental, tax-based fund could be used to purchase it, if there isn't one in place as is in some way. I wish that more and more people, especially leaders, were caring and mindful about the health of our planet. It's the only home we have and likely be the only home we will ever have. It gives us life, water, food and shelters us from the dangers of space, yet, here we are repaying Earth by continuing to destroy it with our greed, power and ego. If our beloved Earth is to be inhospitable, then surely, we will go extinct in no time and that's a consequence I cannot bear in my mind for the sake of future generations. Despite this, Kurzgesagt gives me the hope that, one day, we will all set aside our differences and fight to stop human-driven climate change to make the world a better place for every living being. Appreciate the gold video Kurzgesagt!

That's pretty much the point. Every few decades they move a different goalpost around and tell it's it's going to destroy the world. Wasn't that long ago we were all supposed to freeze to death from an imminent ice age. And when that didn't happened they shifted it to global warming. And when that didn't kill us and the average global temperature started to level off they shifted it to climate change, as though the climate is not in a constant state of change by nature. People are easier to control when they're afraid and hopeless.

And a communication framework and how to do that. Not to mention, no -one was expecting the US to fund everything. That's just some BS Donald comes out with to justify whatever treaty he's pulled out of. Not to mention, climate change is not just an issue of environmental damage. It's an economic issue which will cost the world trillions of dollars if we let it get out of hand. Kind of like covid, the more it gets out of hand, the most it was cost to get it under control. The best thing (from both a financial and human perspective) is to go hard on dealing with it now before it gets out of control. But just like covid, idiotic, populist leaders like Donald fucking Trump will ignore and deny the problem. That's simple whataboutism, as sad as it is. And by now you can not point out any issue without someone replying with some form of "Actually, there is this other issue that is more of an issue, hence we should focus on that!" Or the advanced kind of excuse among the lines of "But why should we in do anything, while is being much worse?" And that saddens me. It does, because people don't understand that someone has to start taking care of some problem. Others will follow. And also because pointing out a problem and working on solving it never indicates the importance of said problem. Because it doesn't matter, it's just another problem that needs solving.

It's just consumerism blaming the people for their byproduct. They emit so much more so let's stop buying from them and just reduce their footprint. Or we can regulate and stop them from being a business all together. Gas powered is just forced on us to keep those in power rich. We wanna have people trade in their car for a replacement that is modern and highly invested in keeping it green. The gov can work with car companies and have them scrap and recycle all those cars for new cars. But that just seems like it's be too much work for them, but if it's for a profit they'll make the sea part and move mountains for that extra penny

Made very well, I am just missing the two maybe most important factors here: 1) Reduced Consumption would especially lead to less emmissions, as long as we won't find ourselfes be satisfied with lass than with more and more we will have a porblem. So we need to find new ways of enjoying live without consuming new things all the time. 2) There are real people suffering from climate change. It's not a concept but a real problem, leaving small farmers families hungry because they can harvest less food and so on. As long as we see the climate change as a theoretical problem and not something that actually causes harm to people that are worth as much as we are there won't be a lot of changes made. That's at least what I believe :)
