Have you ever tried to persuade someone that your belief was true and that person responds, “Well, there is no truth” or “It might be true for you, but not for me”? It’s a frustrating experience.
This way of thinking, called relativism, can impede any sort of rational dialogue.
The view that truth-that is, what is real-is relative to the individual is what some scholars call “I Say” relativism.
As U.S. Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the 1992 landmark case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.”
In other words, in “I Say” relativism the individual determines what is real rather than discovers what is real.
In order to engage in any sensible discussion about truth, we must first overcome the obstacle of relativism.
So, what can we say in response?
First, we can ask, “Is it absolutely true that there is no absolute truth?” If they respond “yes”, then the statement itself is an absolute truth. But this is a contradiction-it’s absolutely true that there is no absolute truth? Plain absurdity!
Now, suppose a relativist answers our question, “No! The statement, ‘there is no absolute truth’ is only relatively true-it’s true relative to my system of beliefs.” This is problematic as well.
Using the verb “is” implies an assertion about the objective order of things-conformity to reality. But this is like saying, “It’s absolutely true that there is no absolute truth,” which as we already saw is a contradiction.
Furthermore, a relativist’s claim that the statement, ‘there is no absolute truth,’ is true relative to his system of beliefs makes the claim trivial.
If a relativist simply means by this, “I believe this but others don’t,” then it doesn't tell us anything we didn’t already know.
If a relativist means, “This is just my opinion, take it or leave it,” then there’s no need to pay any attention to it.
To put it frankly if a relativist is not going to make a claim about reality, then who cares? Why should we be concerned with such trivial matters?
A second way we can respond to “I Say” relativism is to show how the logic leads to absurdities.
For example, in a recent video, “College Kids Say the Darndest Things,” released by the Family Policy Institute of Washington, Joseph Backholm, the executive director, interviewed eight students from the University of Washington about so-called gender identity. Backholm, a white, 5' 9" male, asked the students what they would say if he told them he were a female. Every student was quick to say it would be okay.
Backholm then asks the students a series of questions that lead to his identifying as a 6’5” Chinese woman. Although a few of the students were a bit hesitant to affirm Backholm’s assertion that he is 6' 5" and Chinese they concluded it would be within his right to identify as he pleases.
That’s either going to make you laugh or cry.
Perhaps the students would have seen the absurdity of the relativistic logic if Backholm asked them, “What if I say I am a cat?”
Lest you think such claims are outside the realm of possibility, check out the story of 20-year-old Nano from Oslo, Norway, a young woman who claims she is a cat trapped in a human body. As she explains in an interview with a Norwegian reporter, she was “born in the wrong species.”
The absurdities that follow from “I Say” relativism continue.
By embracing relativism our culture has reached the point of insanity. There can be no false perception of reality because there is no reality to perceive-only a reality to create. Can our society function with such a worldview? It’s doubtful.

Ug Krishnamurti. I think you are confusing concepts (the ideas we have to navigate our reality) with truth (reality). As we have no other mechanism (our ideas) to understand our reality, we must take responsibility for the way we conceptualise the world we live in - which I agree means calling out some of the ridiculousness you have highlighted in this video. That has nothing to do with proving that absolute truth exists. It simply means shifting the locus of truth from something objective outside of ourselves to 'truth' being a creative act that we all partake in responsibly.

You can be a relatavist and still acknowledge the nessecity of conformed "truth" for society to function. Also using the "is" in relatively true is not a fallacy as it implies the relatavist is decicive in their perspective. In the same way that "I'm sure, that I'm unsure" isn't a contradiction.

you are correct that saying "I'm sure, that I'm unsure" isn't a contradiction, however it is stating a fact, that is that you are absolute in the fact that you're unsure. which is contradictive to the argument at hand. That there is no absolute truth.

@@the_crackedcoconut1881 even in that statement, the lack of absolution is implicit. To be nauseatingly pedantic I suppose to amend it, you'd say "I'm relatively sure that I'm unsure". Contextually speaking, that's what was meant.

You can also be a relavist and acknowledge the fact that there are things which don't apply to relavitism, such as mathematics. Though, on a deeper scale, mathematics has the potential to only be relative to biological life as we know it, which strengthens the argument for relativism even more.

There is something that neither absolutists nor most relativists get about relativism. By stating "There are no absolutes.", I am not stating the absolute truth but an approximation of the absolute truth. And this approximation of the absolute truth is more accurate than the approximation made by absolutism. The same as Einsteins mechanics are a better approximation of real mechanics than Newtons mechanics. There is no need for individual/personal truth here to make my point.

It would be wonderful is this information was also available in multiple languages. I am thinking Spanish to start, since we have an increasing spanish speaking population and the hispanic cradle catholic tradition, broken in true practice, can be revived with apologetics and with thorough explanations like this. Toward the end of the video the globe is interesting. It seems that when you look “inside” the sphere, things are in their proper places. But when you look on the outer surface, then it looks flipped. I wonder if that was deliberate and significant. Surely it was and is.

The answer is yes and no in my experience because I seen 4 different realities at same time where 4 different things are happening. I know people that seen even more realities. If you are directly connected to the truth, then you need not be dependent upon mere beliefs. If you are NOT directly connected to the truth, then as a consequence you are obviously located within "The Zone of Less Than Truth". Thus if you choose to stick to your mere beliefs, then you have also chosen to stick to being located within the zone of less than truth. Those who stick to their beliefs, have also raised their beliefs to the top of the ladder in their decision making. They do so even though it is truth that is to be located in such a position ! But since believers raised their beliefs to the top of the ladder instead, there was now a gap all the way down at the bottom. In turn, this gap became the only location available for truth, within these peoples minds. And so such people in turn see the truth as clearly being an absolute lie. Thus roughly 2,000 years ago, a fellow named Jesus Christ was placed in front of a group of religious "believers". He said he spoke the truth, and so they said he was a liar. He said he was the son of God, thus they thought of him as being the son of Satan. He should be treated with respect, thus they did the exact opposite. This demonstration of how believers respond to truths, was a complete success. And so one can not simply present truth directly to believers. One must speak to such people from a distance. To do so, one must communicate with them, via speaking to them in parables.

The ability to define your own concept of existence and the meaning of the universe (yadda yadda) has nothing to do with freedoms or liberty or society or laws, rather has more the mental ferocity of the individual. If you CAN think this way, you may either CHOOSE to think this way or even HAVE to think this way, no matter the outside influence. I think it's funny the person talking about liberty puts people in jail, administer fines and punishments and sets laws. I'm no anarchist (give me dictatorship over anarchy, give me freedom over dictatorship) but I think that it would be interesting to start laws fresh from scratch, keeping out the jargon. Maybe have a very complex exel document or something. If Crime A = X, go to table B7 B7a: Did *Insert additional data* occur? =Y Go to Column B B7b: Was *Insert Motive* a factor? =Y Go to Row F B7, Column B, Row F: Your punishment is *Low Fine*. You now owe X money: X = % of income - immediate bills (food, rent, offspring, travel, electric, gas, internet, water)/Judge may choose to give leeway with regards to Netflix.

Wonderful. So.... because only God is absolute, He alone can tell us what Truth is. And that is what He did in the Holy Scriptures. But than Catholicism has a problem. For if our religious traditions contradict His revelation, we must repent

That's actually the point, the absurdity of the statement reflects the absurdity of the larger world. The idea being that people should allow the world to be ridiculous and absurd and have no real reason to attempt to justify the world around them

I've never had this experience. It's a straw man. I'm an orthodox Catholic and I love Catholic Answers, but I have never met a relativist and I think they barely exist. It's an easy position to demolish but very few people actually hold it.

The idea that we can all run around getting to choose our own truth is nonsense...but there is a possibility that truth is subjective... meaning that it only exists as a concept inside the Mind.... being that we all have a similar subjective experience of the external world... the concept we call truth might just be a useful tool to navigate through it.

@@davidbourne8267 I'm a relativist. And this video is biased because the dude doesn't even seem to understand what is relativism. I can tell you how I view the world and it would take days to write everything. Also I'm a human of 32 years. Considering yourself a women or a cat or anything that you aren't isn't relativism at all. It's, as he said, like creating or more deciding that reality can be whatever you want. And particulary not what it is. I also can say christianism is bad and show examples exactly like this video. But I'll be accurate because I'll show christians while he didn't showed any relativist. P.S : I'm entirely able to hold my position also. My beliefs are rooted in solid grounds.

Ok so now relativism equals creating your own reality ? I feel this video was firstly made to make us perceive relativism as bad, using extreme examples. I also can tell you that christianism is bad because it pushes you to see reality under its prism, and I also could give you the most extreme examples regarding this. Would that make it true though ?

1. Now equals? Did it equal something else before? 2. So you think relativism isn't bad? 3. Christianism isn't a thing... But is your claim true when it comes to Christianity? Bad according to whose or what standard? 4. What prism are you looking for and does it reflect the truth? 5. You could give? Then why didn't you? C'mon, give me 3 or your "most extreme examples"... 6. Would that make Christianity true or your claims? How do you discern what is true?

Special Relativity(SR) says that both observers are correct. One says that he is at rest, and that it is the other who is in motion, and visa versa. Thus it is being said that both are true/real observations. Thus it is being said that there is no such a thing as an "Absolute True" singular observation, and thus there is no "True Reality" being allowed to exist at all. To put it in other words, it is being said that the huge reality in which individuals reside within, has no rights at all, and that each individual overrides all other than himself/herself, which of course includes the reality of which one resides within. Back to SR. Physicists/Teachers fail to mention that we exist within an absolute 4 dimensional Space-Time environment in which we are constantly in absolute motion, with the magnitude of that absolute motion being equivalent to the magnitude of motion of which light has as it moves across space. The outcome of this setting of absolutes, is the SR phenomena itself.

Neither observer can be correct if there isn't any absolute objective truth. Mathematical truth is a priori. It's objective. Two calculators cannot both be correct if they contradict each other. If there were no absolute and objective truth, there wouldn't be any contradictions. C.S. Lewis has demonstrated that moral truth is just as objective as mathematical truth.

​@@tanner865 I think the problems all come down to the use of beliefs and disbeliefs. If you are not directly connected to the truth, then you may become dependent upon beliefs and dis-beliefs instead. If you are not directly connected to the truth, and thus you are obviously located at a distance from the truth, then you are now located within the zone of, "Less than truth". Thus if you choose to stick to your beliefs and dis-beliefs, then you have chosen to stick to being located within the zone of less than truth. Seeing is believing. Therefore even seeing is incomplete, since beliefs obviously reside within the zone of less than truth. I had my observations of the concept known as motion, therefore, being merely observations that my eyes had provided, I was not satisfied with this limited understanding of motion. My goal therefore was to understand motion absolutely, rather than be confined to a partial understanding. If you watch my Special Relativity YT videos, you will see how this was done.

I Saw who made this video and I just had to comment because in the search for the truth on anything I find it funny that someone would come to a place that is Possessing the name Catholic in it AndYes I am a believer I just don’t believe what the pope does that we have to go through him to get to our Creator there’s no truth in that

Dear Karlo, you may pretend to make a claim about reality but, as long as you are unable to support it without relying on it at some point, you are no less expressing an opinion that others do not share than a relativist not pretending to make a claim about reality and there’s no more need to pay any attention to it. I would also like to point out that your choice of examples of relativism is biased. You might have chosen more serious and interesting metaphysical questions such as those regarding the existence of essences or the intrinsic and absolute individuation of reality for instance.

Peace with God.....Jesus said "I am the truth"...you can believe Him,He also said that if you believe in Him,you will be saved,the thief on the cross had no good works,but Jesus saved him because he trusted Jesus,that's all,you can't trust in your good works because we always fail,but if you believe Jesus paid for your sins on the cross,you will be saved.

By believing that relativism is the "only" path to freedom, you are contradicting the core relativistic belief that there are no absolute truths. If relativism were "true," then there shouldn't be only one path to freedom. Relativism is just a sad attempt to not offend people by rejecting science and logic.

Relativism gives you the opportunity to discover what things are objectively true and what things are subjective grey areas or simply cannot be known or proven one way or the other. It also gives you the ability to behave AS IF some things were objectively true, because of what that belief makes possible. This is already what people are doing anyway. The only difference is that a relativist is self aware of his own subjective limitations while the objectivist is overconfident in his ability to know truth.

I like it when we human beings (read the guy in the video) use one era, the era he is we are living in, to base his arguments on without realizing he's just proving the truth about relativism. You see, you can't use cultural beliefs and society standards to dictate what's absurd or not. Because that changes with time. There is a time being left handed was an omen. It isn't any more. Probably in future it will be the norm for people to identify as cats. Yes, it's ridiculous now, but that's all based on current standards. There was a time it was absurd for certain gender or race to do certain things. It isn't any more. You sir need to expand your view

The Truth is the same whether it was in the past, at present and in the future. Gender or race is of humans and the latter is not absolute like the Truth. Please educate yourself

That is why there is black and there is white. Unless if you are blind. That is why truth is necessary. We will miss categorical differences if we just accept that white is black and black is white and that would be absurd and contradictory. We need a society to function alongside truth. Truth matters. A bad omen in your example comes from cultural perspective, and any cultural perspective may be wrong or right, but the truth remains the truth even if it is past, present or future.

@@jayjaydee2875 It's actually good that you have used colours as an analogy since I'm sure you know about shades. And there are tons of shades of white. So white is not one absolute stop. It's a sliding scale. And to complicate things more, colour is technically a matter of perception and therefore subjective. I get your point about society defining some rules to govern their lives but the rules are dictated by the society's understanding of their world at the time. This so-called truth keeps changing as perceptions change, as interpretations, moral and scientific, change.

You forget that the proof of a claim lies with the maker of the claim, not those who would refute it. By claiming there is absolute truth you make the first claim and set a strawman to knock down with word play.

This presentation of the limits of individual perspectives is disingenuous. Recognition that you and I may honestly see things differently does not amount to assertion that objective truth does not exist, but just recognition that nobodies subjective truth is necessarily that objective truth. Only God knows objective truth, and presentation of your understanding of God as objective truth is definitely NOT truth. Silly relativists are straw men. Such hubris.
