I'm an aerospace engineering and I own a '12 X5M E70 with an S63, and I can tell you it's the worse engineered engine I've ever seen on any car. Sure it gives out 555HP and lots of torque when it runs properly, but in 3 years I've practically replaced everything on that engine and parts keep failing. Everything is in triple, and putting those turbos in the hot vee section with all those cheap plastic hoses around that section makes it a disaster in terms or reliability.

It's actually not bad, I get 16-19 mpg on the highway depending on if you're doing 70 or 90+ . It's better or just as good as any other big truck, but you actually good hp and brakes to match. The only other thing I recall being a disappointment on this car is the sound. It doesn’t sound right and that is because of the exhaust manifold. For some reason bmw did make the manifold pipes all the same length 😢 and that affects the sound coming out at the exhausts. It doesn’t have the v8 sound. Why? I’m not even sure you can fix/change it due to the space? No idea.
@surreaLinnovatioN

A simple X pipe fixes it. Unfortunately it does have that overlapped 4 banger sound at revs. With a muffler delete at warmup and idle is sounds like a beast.

I owned one for 6 months and sold it. Drove it home from buying it and blew a vacuum line.. Replaced it and a month later blew another. Changed all vacuum lines. As well as one rear air shock. I then realized auxiliary turbo pump stopped working and replaced it. After doing all this, i got reduced power malfunction on full throttle. At this point i sold it. I suspect i needed coils and spark plugs. Worst case scenario injectors. Car had 60,000 miles so it was imminent to change all. Expect paying 1800 for sparks and coils. Injectors over 2,000. If you can wrench yourself great! But if not, definitely not a car you need Now i own a g63 amg. So far so good lol. Fingers crossed 🤣

Just to give you an idea of how much trouble these beasts give you: it's been two months since my last post, and I've had to replace the main water pump too (the pump cost me CAD$300 and I did it myself, and I replaced the thermostat and belt while I was at it for an extra CAD$200, but it took me 4 hours to do!), rear left air bag (CAD$200 for a decent one, since original German one costs CAD$700!), and starter (it's a bitch to get to and you need to support the engine to remove the engine mount so it's difficult to do yourself). I also replaced the rear brake pads since they were due (Original Brembo pads were on special at Canadian Tire 😁 at CAD$90, and I bought the brake sensor wires from Amazon for CAD$16). @GrandSavrify you can get jobber rear air bags for CAD$70 on Amazon: www.amazon.ca/dp/B08FBJWYBZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_HY9HP7D0HHXXQ6ZPPRYK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Rod bearings could become an issue on neglected cars, Or people doing those 15k oil changes from this BMW generation; what a horrible idea. 3 water pumps :o

My '12 X5M's main water pump failed 2 weeks ago. Plastic impeller wheel fell off the axle while removing it, that's how close to disaster I was. Cost me CAD$300 for a HEPU made in Germany replacement. It was a b*tch to replace.

My '12 X5M had 170k when I sold it a couple of months ago. It was stock too, and had all kinds of reliability issues, especially with the engine...

@Zeiten LLC what a great video! No hyperbole, no sugar coating, no gloom and doom, just the facts from your many years experience working on BMWs. I've actually been contemplating getting one of these to use for the next few years until the Tesla truck is out for a while and thoroughly vetted. Your video certainly is helping me with my decision. It sounds like if you thoroughly check the car out and budget say $2-3k per year for maintenance (and another $50k for gas :)) this could be a reasonable proposition. Quick question, I have a 1992 850i 6p I am bringing back to life. A great automobile mechanic, body guy and good friend repainted the car a beautiful carbon black. After the repaint the engine bay was carefully steam cleaned, but now when you start the car it only runs for like 1min then bumps up a few hundred rpm and then dies. We checked both distributors but there is no indication water got in there. Replaced the fuel filters, still no luck. He was thinking the timing and cylinder identification sensors but visually they seem fine. His specialty had kind of been American Muscle cars but he is branching out lately and did a great job on a Ferrari and is now working on my 850i. Have you ever seen this, any thoughts???

Thank you, well i would look into MAF sensors (mass air flow), as far as I remember those v12 don’t have idle control valve and idle is controlled fully by throttle bodies so cleaning those would be a good idea, if the car was sitting for a while refuel it, old gas deteriorates but it is rare. Look into air leaks and air flow

@@Zeiten Thank you much! Will check into those things. Also will update with what the problem and fix turn out to be. Keep up the great videos. Perhaps one on the 850 is in the future :). Not much of a market as so few were made, but a wonderful car nonetheless.
