LGS owner here as well - Yes, the wholesale cost on these decks from most stores is going to $7-8 USD (so more in CAD) more than the New Capenna pre-cons were, so a $5-10 USD increase in on-shelf price is to be expected. It'd sure be nice if there were MSRP on these products.

Seeing as this post got pinned (Thanks, Prof!) I'll piggy back a little. Local Stores are getting handed the crappy end of the stick from a lot of larger distributors atm (not just WOTC), so if you want too see them stick around, you gotta support them. I know these decks and other boxed product can be found much cheaper online, so I won't blame you if you go that route (although beware of booster boxes from Amazon, often opened and returned unfortunately) But if you do get boxed product online, head to your local store for singles, sleeves, deck boxes and dice, usually we are able to sell those at more competitive prices. And now the world is opening back up again, go out and PLAY in these spaces, grab a can of coke and a candy bar from them and pay $5 to play Friday Night Magic... it's literally those little things that are keeping places like us open right now. Thanks for reading and thanks again to The Professor for his awesome content and community :)

I highly recommend getting decks from gameology, all 4 set you back $229.95 AUD right now. Only downside is you do have to get all 4. If you feel bad about gimping your LGS the cash for precons then source their singles for fun builds, buy snacks there instead of bringing snacks in those are where the real profit margins are.

Noteworthy there that Exit from Exile went down the least. Some cards on the other decks were pricey simply due to a lack of reprints, while the deck that seems most consistent but didn't fetch high prices is more resilient to these fluctuations.

I still remember picking up the vampire and cats decks from commander 2017, both based on using them for play. Yeah, the decks and cards in them may now be worth quite a bit, especially edgar markov, but the value of the decks should always be in the playability. 10:51 Assuming there's not a joke I'm missing, this is a really strange statement because the last D&D set had a super similar deck to Exit from Exile named Planar Portal, with a commander that also exiles a card each turn and lets you play it, and gives you a token whenever you play a card from exile. When I first saw the commander for this one get revealed I was confused because the deck seems kind of like a color shifted version of last year's D&D precon, and that one was your favorite from the AFR commander decks.

I just recently got into MTG about a month ago, and I played with my friends decks while I learned the game. The first deck I got for myself was Reap the Tides, because I liked the idea of ramping, and I turned out to really like the deck, and my friends all hated playing against it. A week later I was on amazon and saw a bundle for this entire set of 4 commander decks for $140, which I thought was a pretty good price. I looked through them a little bit and thought they looked nice, but I am still relatively new to the game, so I was just kind of hoping that they were good enough to all use. And once again I was delighted by the results of these decks. all of them are extremely fun to play with and are also usually very good. Hopefully I can keep accidentally stumbling across good precons with zero research like I have been so far lol

@@mindlightwave I agree with this statement IFF (if and only if) the LGS in question is catering to your needs. I had a new store open up from me back in 2019. They were asked by countless players to start up Modern, and later Pioneer. Hell, a number of players asked them to do Standard (me being one of them and I HATE Standard). We just wanted to play ANYTHING that wasn't just more mindless 4-pod Commander trash tournaments. They kept promising that they would do the formats asked, and started doing a lot of Draft as they finally got their WotC approval in 2020 just after Ikoria and the COVID shutdown. So with Draft now added to the Commander tournaments, it felt like they were on their way to at least Standard, and hopefully Pioneer and Modern. Well we all know that Pioneer died off for a while, so I forgive them for that. But they continued to push Draft EVERY week over Standard, despite a desire by most players to play a Constructed format. So fast forward to the summer of 2021, and MH2 releases. Tons of players, both the Commander players and the Modern players, bought everything the store had. The store promised us that this was their big push to Modern. They ran a "casual" Modern night, to "test" demand, despite knowing that the demand was there. Well after a month and a half of that, players got fed up with the lack of actual tournaments and left. Then by the time Modern tourneys did start, we went from what would have been 20+ minimum before most players left, to less than 10. Then they declared Modern dead, because they killed it. To make matters even worse, I tried to get a Flesh and Blood scene started. Keep in mind that I barely enjoy the game. I was just trying to help the store out because they asked me to. I was a regular and had been since they opened in 2019. I'd spent THOUSANDS there. Well, long story short, the store owner knew that I was planning to buy some boxes. It just so happens that I do my research, and find out that buying some Crucible of War is a great idea for a tournament player like myself. That same day, LSS released the statement about the product going OOP. I go to the store the following day, not expecting it to affect my price at all, because the store owner has never raised prices on his boxes before when a market spike hit like that. His position was that he wanted to be a fair business man, and that doubling the prices of boxes to $200, that he paid $70 for, felt dishonest. I appreciated that. Well somewhere along the way, he clearly changed his mind. Those $85 Crucible boxes became $160. Now, I might have been able to understand that had he not told me his prior philosophy. I might have understood had he had an active FAB scene. But here he is, asking me to help him start a tournament scene, and then he raises the prices of the boxes through the roof, and I'm supposed to just suck it up? Nah, man that type of thing is a two way street. Had he said, "Hey, Xoul, these boxes doubled in price overnight. I didn't pay that for them, but I'd like to make a bit of extra money to help out the store and my family. Do you mind paying say, $100 a box?" I would have gladly said yes. Instead, he wouldn't budge on the price at all, while sitting on a half dozen boxes, with no market for it locally. He wasn't doing online sales either. Long story short, tl;dr, whatever: an LGS only deserves as much respect as a player gets back in return. That LGS that I mentioned, they aren't doing so well now. They baited players in claiming one philosophy, then changed up the rules mid game. A lot of regulars have abandoned them and drive twice as far to play, and more importantly, shop elsewhere.

@@blaze556922 I don't disagree with you about Wizards greed. But let's not go spreading disinformation about LGS's. I don't know what the price is for these decks, but I doubt that most LGS's are doubling their money on them. In the event that they are, let's nor act like that is a huge amount of money. Say they sell 20 of these decks at a profit of $25 each. That's $500. Wow, they are so rich, right?! NO. That doesn't even cover the rent of the majority of places that an LGS is open. That doesn't even get into costs like electricity, water, gas, supplies needed to stay open like cleaning supplies, employee paychecks, and then finally an actual paycheck for the store owner as well. That money, that profit that you mention isn't getting spent on yachts and islands in the Caribbean. It's getting put right back into the store more often than not. If the profit margins were even close to what you claim they are, and as easy to maintain and manage as you seem to think they are, then many more people would be investing into LGS's. So like I said, please don't spread misinformation.

These decks look super sick and they've got some amazing reprints, (Jeska's Will!!) but every time the price shoots up, buying even just one gets harder to stomach. I bought singles from the last one and it still cost me 30-40 bucks. And that was only a month ago! I guess I'll wait half a year and get one of these for 25. :P

Exit from Exile is such a fun deck. Once I saw it, I knew it would be interesting so I grabbed it... and Funnily enough, it was the ONLY one of the 4 that weren't marked up. Grabbed it for 50 CAD, while the Goad deck was 60, Mind Flayarrs 70, and Party Time already marked up to 85. So definitely glad the deck I wanted is fun, strong, and not marked up.

I'd argue that the playing from exile theme can be as strong as storm decks. The reason it's so cheap for its power level is simply because it's much more harder to control. There's a bigger learning curve, as someone else put it. It's like trying to tame a wild stallion. I'm currently working on a 5-color play from exile deck. There's no proper commander available, so I'm just making my own. It's casual anyway.

Draconic Dissent is probably my favourite of this batch. I love dragons and the commander looks great to use (drawing cards and getting counters is great). But the Goad mechanic is so fun when you’re in the game. Just causing trouble for opponents by provoking other creatures and then getting to plus off it seems hilarious and I can’t wait to see how people will react to having to attack scary boards.

I really wish someone out there could get someone high up at wizards (or hasbro if they're the real villain here) in an interview and ask them how they can justify selling a hundred card commander deck for twenty bucks not long ago and now charge almost three times that for, on their end, couldn't possibly be that much more to produce.
@johncreekpaum4998
@johncreekpaum4998 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'll give the answer that nobody would say but is likely the truth.... "We found that lowering the price to $20 didn't increase sales enough to have those decks make as much as the more expensive ones. But, at the higher price point we are selling more than enough to easily cover the slight drop off in sales."
@Xoulrath_
@Xoulrath_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@johncreekpaum4998 I highly doubt that that is the truth at all. The reality is that there are still a lot of Magic players who don't play Commander; I'm one of them. I'll drop $20 on a Commander deck that I otherwise don't need, all because of a few cards that make the deck a value. At $40 I'll just buy singles, which means that Wizards doesn't see my money at all. I've also talked to a lot of Commander players who live and breath the format, and they were willing to buy the $20 decks for staples like Sol Ring, since the true Commander player loves having a million decks ready to go. But at $40+, they stay away because the value isn't there. So it's more likely that new players are buying these decks to play with friends. Or existing players just getting back into the game might be buying them to figure out what the format is. But players like me, who primarily focus on Modern and Pioneer, and existing Commander players, are not the ones buying these decks at $40+.
@johncreekpaum4998
@johncreekpaum4998 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xoulrath_ OK, but be honest, do you truly believe that the $20 Commander decks sold twice as many as the $40 ones? Because that's the amount needed to make the $20 ones as profitable as the $40 ones.

@joshholmes1372 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xoulrath_ people also buy them for reprint value. Party time has a number of valuable reprints. Plus a few new cards that could be commander staples. So you end up paying less than you would buying each of those cards as a single. Plus you get other cards to build with as you please.
