Signature Spellbook: Sorin There is a ton of flavor potentials here. He's an interesting character who has been around a long time. He strikes a tenuous balance between vampires and humans, good and malign. He's made sacrifices and been a hard character to parse at points. I'd love to see a little short story included in the Spellbooks. It's not an expensive thing for them to do to increase the value of the product. Desired inclusions: A cheaper Sorin, Avacyn (original one), Anguished Unmaking, Declaration in Stone, Exquisite Blood

With Ikoria they literally added a way of making a card appear one way while representing a different card. They could have made a card that was "Chandra's Fireball" with "Lightning Bolt" as true name text allowing them to make a truly thematic card while also making a reprint people would want.

Another one I saw, was if they kept Young Pyromancer, but changed the art - they had an unused art of Chandra from Origins that got posted on reddit that was absolutely fantastic, and while I get that the character in this one is like cosplaying her or something, that's 2 of the most likely cards from this to see play that don't even have new art.

I feel like this would have been a perfect opportunity to do a Teferi Spellbook, as it would have tied in with M21 and all the characters from his past. Another reprint of Teferi's protection would have been VERY welcome, and they could have brought back some fun cards with the updated phasing text. Even if they wanted to stick with mono-blue, a new art reprint of Teferi, Temporal Archmage would be amazing!

First one: pay {R}, get {R}{R} Second one: pay {R}, get {R}{R}{R} Third one: pay {R}, get {R}{R}{R}{R} Fourth one: pay {R}, get {R}{R}{R}{R}{R} Then Past in Flames, 1st one you flashback nets you 5, etc. Is it super busted? I don't think so, mainly due to sorcery speed, but it is definitely not bad either. It doesn't need Baral or gobbo to be efficient like the other rituals.

Honestly, I _like_ the choices they made for this. It feels more like it says something about Chandra as a character than Jace's Spellbook did. If anything, the fact it feels "disappointing" because there are higher priced but less thematic cards to have included says more to me about how wotc needs a significantly more aggressive reprint policy than that this product itself is bad.

Great review! I love these products but you're absolutely right about this being on the weaker side, and despite liking Chandra, I'm ultimately going to pass on this one. I know it's never going to happen but I'd love to see an Ajani spellbook. Being multicolor and having a full story arc during the shards of alara block, I just always find him to be an underappreciated mainstay that could use some time in the spotlight.

Had a dream I met you at a convention and we talking about English major stuff and you recited a steampunk poem you made where a farmhand killed the narrator’s wife, son, daughter, and cat. You might be asking why the farmhand wasn’t fired after the first murder, but the way you told it made it short and concise and more about the emotion of betrayal rather than the lack of secrecy I’ve work done in said betrayal. Tangent: the Core Set 2021 bundle had some really nice lands, multiple versions, foil versions, and an alt art pack leader. Figured I would point it out in case you wanted to do an updated “is it worth it” for bundles. I don’t remember what I paid for it though, I picked up singles from my LGS at the same time.

Interesting. I thought this was the best one they did by far. Every single card in the Chandra set is currently or has been played in high-level tournaments. The weakest card is Pyromancer's Ascension, which isn't really played now, but has been in the past.

It's neat that the M21 planeswalkers have spellbook-style frames, gives us a taste of what one of their spellbooks may look like. as for other walkers, you could justify fetchlands in a Nissa spellbook, though more likely we'd just get elementals and ramp spells. I'd like to see a multicolored walker featured, just to see if wizards would print only multi-colored cards that are on-theme or if they would have similar styles for the mono-colored cards within. That may be one limitation of the spellbooks as a series.

Signature spellbooks are a fascinating concept to me, because I always have enjoyed the lore of magic, at least from afar, and this is a nice way to tie a character's narrative to a set of cards. I feel like Nissa or Liliana are probably going to be the next spellbooks we see, just because they are mainly the planeswalker faces or the last remaining colors. That said, I would really like to see a Tibalt or Sorin Spellbook. Tibalt because I wish his story could use flashing out, and Sorin because he's a great Walker with a decent access to a variety of staples, black removal and tutors, vampires, possibly having a theme between him and Nahiri with back to back spellbooks.

I would love if they changed their business model away from gambling. Just straight up sell any rare for 3$ and play sets of lower rarity cards for the same. That would still keep booster pack relevant with a significant difference: You have now hard numeric evidence that this is not gambling because you sell the cards and all have the same price. A booster just being the draft pack where you buy a a random selection of cards with a slight discount. Well, if you get a box below 108$(3$/pack) everything below "rare" is now a free addition. Because any rare is established to be worth exactly 3$. But right now they are doing the opposite with selling some cards for about 50$(and up) which clearly tells me: "Yes, we are doing gambling. Those cards are 50$ and the others are the non winning lottery tickets."

I think Tamiyo is a great candidate. She has a ton of lore and has been a mainstay in the story for a while. She's multicolored and Moon Sage could really use a reprint. Also she's just awesome and I think there's a ton of flavor room for new art.

Tbh a lighting bolt artwork of Chandra could be badass... since they could have the main blast be a lighting bolt but spiraling around it is fire. Have it where it’s her own version of the spell.

To be honest I want to see Signature Spellbook Liliana 1. Liliana of the Veil (A card that has only been reprinted in masters, Mythic) 2. Liliana's Caress (A card that hasnt been reprinted, Uncommon a 5 dollar uncommon) 3. Rise of the Dark Realms (A card still overly priced even from Jumpstart) 4. One of the four demons that controlled her 5. Diabolic Tutor (which could have been in this spellbook because of Liliana's guidance of Chandra through Kaladesh even if it was negative) 6. Command the Dreadhorde 7. Throw in Nicol Bolas the God Pharaoh or some form of Nicol Bolas 8. Liliana's Contract That would be a really good spellbook in my opionion also cover great cards with some good story background to them, slap alternate art and a cool boarder and boom perfect

I agree with your overall evaluation, Prof. However, I think what might be a nice idea in the future, is to look at what the card's prices were BEFORE being announced in Signature Spellbook. I do think it's a little unfair to use the prices post-Spellbook-inclusion-announcement as the comparison. Otherwise, it's unclear how the reprint has affected the price.

I built an M20 deck based around Chandra's cards. It was pretty good. Now that M21 is available in Arena, my "Chandra's Chandra of Chandra" deck is spoiled for choice when it comes to reasonable includes for the theme. I've been shaking my head over the list of cards included in Chandra's Spellbook ever since it was made public.

Signature Spellbook: Vraska An originally shallow character that has gotten some major depth recently. Unfortunately, there aren’t any expensive versions of her, but I could see this lineup going rather well. *Vraska, Relic Seeker* is the representation of her that we got the most character depth with. We got to see her as she finally has a crew of people she trusts and who trust her, plus she makes up with Jace and helps him to better himself (I ship it, sue me). *Oubliette* would represent her ordeal in the Azorius prisons that left her scarred and ultimately resulted in her Spark igniting. *Assassin’s Trophy* would represent her finally getting vengeance on Isperia and taking her place as the leader of the Golgari swarm. *Memory Jar* would represent the growth it took to trust Jace with her memories in order to trick Bolas. Alternatively, you could go with Induced Amnesia, the card originally intended to represent that moment, but the Jar has more value. *Vraska’s Contempt* could be valuable with some new art, but really it’s for the Vraska connection. *Ochran Assassin* has very little monetary value, but you could have art of a younger Vraska learning the ropes as part of the Ochran. *Thaumatic Compass* is representative of her original mission on Ixalan, and could have some interesting new art/flavor text. Finally, *Perilous Voyage* makes excellent filler due to its amazing flavor: Vraska trying to SAVE Jace when he falls off the waterfall as Orazca awakens.

Next year I would like to see Nissa's next year: Nissa, Voice of Zendikar or Nissa, Worldwaker would be the likely Planeswalker include...but we can hold out hope it will be Nissa, Who Shakes the World. As for other reprints: Nature's Lore, Elvish Mystic, Back to Nature, Burgeoning, Channel, Abundance, Creeping Corrosion, Harmonize, Nissa' Revelation, Nissa's Pilgramage, Sylvan Library, Verdant Confluence, and Vernal Bloom are just a few on my short list.

I would love a signature spellbook for Sorin Markov. He's a character with a ton of story behind him, and some of the spells associated with him or his kind (vampires) feel like the very essence of black mana. Plus, he has more recently been associated with the Orzhov color pairing. Sorin's Vengeance, Vampiric Tutor, and Anguished Unmaking could all easily be included in this list.

Signature Spellbook: Ugin = Fetch lands because he was one of the three planeswalkers to trap the Eldrazi on Zendikar (where we first see fetch lands in Modern) and we first see Ugin in Fate Reforged (where there's fetch lands again). And while he's not associated with any color, he's a dragon spirit in a set with a bunch of multicolored dragons needing fetch lands.

I think your position on reprint effects need an explanation, because I am genuinely confused. If I were to buy even the top three nonfoil cards from this, it would cost 20 bucks, the cost of this product, which includes 5 more nonfoils and 1 foil. That seems like a great value. Asking for reprints and then saying that the reprints made the price too low for the reprints to be worth it is a weird position that I don't fully understand.

I would have liked to hear your take on some other alternatives they could have included. It would add a nice, fine touch to the criticism that the included cards were not good choices. I understand you pointed out lightning bolt, but that isn't very Chandra oriented + we already have a Secret Lair Lightning Bolts this year. Some ideas off the top of my head: Disrupt Decorum (nice Chandra flavor) , Vandalblast, Seasoned Pyromancer (maybe over Young Pyromancer), Chandra's Ignition, Pyromancer's Goggles (reminiscent of Black Blade), Reforge the Soul (maybe over Past in Flames), Pyrohemia

I have a few spellbooks i would like to see Nissa, cultivate, life from lone, zendikar resurgence Ral - bolt, brainstorm need I say more elspeth - Godsend, Shadowspear, deicide, some good soldiers, swords to ploughshare and resurrect Serra, who say's they need to be current 'walkers (shame serra's sanctum is on the reserve list) Liliana - The chain veil, demonic tutor and many zombies

Chandra Ablaze, Pyromancer's Assault, Pyromancer's Gauntlet, Pyromancer's Swath, Chandra's Regulator, Chandra's Fury, Chandra's Outrage, and Fall of the Titans are what this spellbook should have been. Things that actually showcase some of Chandra's character. Maybe even swap a card for Bonds of Mortality despite it being green cause it's when Chandra and Nissa first bonded.

I'd love a Nissa spellbook. She's my favorite walker. I think some great candidates for reprint would be growth spiral, realms uncharted, and cultivate/kodama's reach. The real bomb of a card included would be three visits, and it could be the three times Nissa has been to Zendikar. It might also nicely line up to the third Zendikar set coming out soonish.

I was very sad about spellbook for the lack in quality with the cards included. I love Chandra, so of course I bought it, bit I was some better cards were included. Even lightning bolt being off flavor, would have been a great include.

I'd like to see a Liliana Spellbook next year: Liliana of the Veil and Last Hope are probably too expensive to see a reprint in this kind of product, but Liliana of the Dark Realms or Dread horde General would be a very nice reprint, and we could get cards like Living Death, Necromancy, maybe a spicy Doom Blade alt art where she's wielding the Blackblade to kill Belzenlok?

I thought this one was BY FAR better than the other two released so far. EVERY single card in there is a tournament-played card in some format. Buying these things to make money is always going to be a bad bet because anyone can open them and have them; and singles prices are always going to be lowest right at release because everyone is doing that. You buy it because you want these versions and like them. Chandra TOD - Legacy Mono-red Prison, Modern Gruul Midrange, off-axis Pioneer decks Fiery Confluence - Legacy Mono-red Prison, Commander staple Pyroblast - one of the most widely played Legacy sideboard cards Past in Flames - Legacy storm decks, Modern storm decks Rite of Flame - Legacy storm decks Young Pyromancer - Izzet Delver in Legacy, various decks in Modern over time Cathartic Reunion - Modern Dredge Pyromancer Ascension - formerly in Modern storm; this one is the outlier Gideon had just Path and Rest in Peace as tournament playable cards and Jace had Brainstorm (which has 17 versions already), Gifts Ungiven (which is banned in Commander), and Counterspell, which is realistically played nowhere.
