Barnes earned a PFF of 84.5 over several games to start the season while playing MIKE exclusively, then he was moved to SAM to get Campbell on the field, he is obviously the most versatile of the linebacker neither Anzalone nor Campbell would have any success at playing the SAM, and that is why they are not tasked with that at all.@@coachadamtaylor38

You don't even sniff the field at Iowa unless you understand leverage and play accordingly. Every year Iowa is in the top three nationally for (defending) yards-per-play. That aspect of the game is second nature to 46.

Agree. 100%. Not sure why there is a segment of Lions fans who have such a inaccurate perception of Campbell, but not other players on Defense. Very weird dynamic. He played really well last week. The Bears are going to be a challenge with the Option game and Boot stuff trying to get Fields out on the edge. Get the Run game stopped and be sound against the Pass and the Lions can get off to a fast start.

Well done again. A few things; JRM ended up starting at inside LB in 2021 and did an okay job. His optimal role is ST ace and back up LB. Jack does have one sack from early in the season, and yes he looks to be a very good run defender, although the Lions need him to improve his play in pass coverage. He has the physical traits to do it well, he just needs more training/coaching. One other point from your video, Hutch played a lot better than he got credit for. He kept a hard edge and was somewhat disruptive against the run. The Lions need to get more creative to jump start their pass rush. They can’t just rely on him to be the only pass rusher.

One, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate these film breakdowns of the Lions. Two, I'm glad it seems you love Jack Campbell as much as me! I'm hopeful Anzelone gets another week to heal up and Jack gets another week of experience at MLB. I really think he has all the qualities to not just be good, but to be a legit All-Pro, but he needs snaps in order to continue his improvement. Also, I completely agree that I'd like to Barnes at SAM more and keep Jack in the middle, that alignment just plays better to their respective strengths.

People have to understand what the Lions are trying to build. Of course Campbell looked better playing his natural position. This regime prioritizes versatility and if Campbell could give them anything at another position, it gives the position ultimate flexibility in terms of injury and roster construction. Some decisions that are made aren’t solely for a single game or season. Some decisions have long term in mind. I think Campbell playing all 3 spots while also being used as a pass rusher was checking his utility belt to see exactly what they have in him.

Obviously I have not watched your video yet, but I think it is safe to say that compared to his teammates that are rookies that Jack has not performed as well as Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, or Brian Branch. The good news is that he has been healthy all year, and appears to be getting better month by month. I’m not sure that he will ever live up to the expectations that people have for a #18 pick, particularly a Linebacker, but he seems to be trending in the right direction. There are still five games and the playoffs to go this year, so I would not write off this season yet. He may end up being considered to be the best of the bunch after this season is over.

Campbell missed two Tackles on the opening poss, one of which was in open space vs Fields. I would expect any of the Lions front 6/7 to get juked there. Which is what happened early, as Fields ran all over the Defense with Glenn choosing to force a Keep read. That was a tactical error. What also happened on that 1st Possession was Hutchinson (2x), Branch, and Anzalone getting beat with blocks at the POA. Hutchinson also was unable to beat a TE in a Pass Rush situation on the opening possession. Finally, Derrick Barnes got stoned on the short TD to finish the drive. I am not sure if you noticed, but multiple players got "beat" on the opening drive. Are you willing to point out those guys mistakes as well? Or just Campbell's? He did have 9 Tackles in the game and played quite well. Thank you for commenting though. It helps the video receive more exposure and generate more views. I appreciate it.

Derrick Barnes is the better MIKE linebacker, he maintained a 84.5 PFF, while playing that position for the start of the season. He is playing the majority of his snaps at SAM now to get Jack Campbell on the field. Jack Campbell was an epic failure at SAM and they don ‘t even attempt to put Anzalone there, that speaks volumes to Barnes’ versatility. Even though Barnes is now playing the majority of his snaps at SAM, since the Ravens game, his PFF is higher than Campbell 62.7 compared to 52.4, and again Barnes is playing the majority of his snaps 65% out of position. Barnes played some outside linebacker in college, but again out of position he was forced there to make room for a coaches son, he moved back to the middle his natural position his senior year where he flourished and was able to get drafted even after playing only a 6 game season due to COVID. Barnes is faced with the task of beating guys who are 6’5” 350 LBs or better while playing SAM, and as I stated before it was an epic failure for Campbell. You say you have not seen missed tackles or failures by Campbell, you must have missed Campbell getting stiff armed to the ground by both Keenan Allen and Roschon Johnson in successive games. Roschon Johnson is a third string RB who got drafted in the 4th round. It is obvious your bias for Campbell, however Barnes is the better linebacker and It’s not close. Listen to what Dan Campbell had to say about Barnes after the last game, and remember he is playing the majority of his snaps out of position.
@all_22_films
@all_22_films 9 ай бұрын
If you rely on PFF for evaluation, I would suggest broadening your scope to more data points than just that. When they're facing 11 Personnel, the Will is to the boundary (Anzalone) and the other ILB, the Mike, is to the field. There is no Sam in a Nickel Defense. He is replaced by the Nickel.
@MilesDavis-xx8io
@MilesDavis-xx8io 9 ай бұрын
The SAM for the lions plays primarily on the line, that is where Jack Campbell started out and was a disaster, watch the Ravens game, Campbell got beat fort three touchdowns playing that position a disaster. Barnes is having some success there, but is definitely out of position. I know where the MIKE , SAM and WILL play, I don’t know why you included that analogy in your response. I don’t totally depend on PFF, but they are the only unbiased source that is available now. PFF compared to the podcast analogies is much more reliable for correctness. Your views have been skewed because you listen to these type of analogies. This game was the first game of Campbell that you could put in the good category, all others are less than average especially for a first round linebacker PFF has him at 52.4 75th out of 82 LB’s that sounds about right to me. You could argue that PFF is somewhat off in their analogy however they are unbiased, and have no reason to grade him low. Jack Campbell is not the linebacker this podcast is making him out to be NO WAY.@@all_22_films
@all_22_films
@all_22_films 9 ай бұрын
There is no Sam on the field vs 11 Personnel. The Lions are in a 4-2-5 alignment vs 11, just like 90% of Defenses are. Since 62-65% of Offensive snaps are from 11 Personnel, the Sam designation is minimized at this point. Additionally, there is nothing to discuss when it comes to OLB/9 tech opposite of Hutchinson at this point (vs 21/22 or 12 Pers). Hopefully, Irvin and/or Houston (when he returns) can help alleviate the lack of Pass Rush talent there. Campbell did not "start out" at OLB/9 tech, he played ILB, which is his position, exclusively in Wk 1. The Lions mistakenly moved him there after injuries at that position early in the season. Barnes would've been the better choice there since he often struggles in all Pass coverage, Man or Zone. Campbell played better than you are crediting. I frankly don't care what PFF thinks because their grading is far more skewed than you posit.
@MilesDavis-xx8io

i just read a chart on Barnes’ coverage for the entire time he has been in the NFL, he is off the charts in terms of linebackers in coverage in the league, no other linebacker has been in coverage more over those three years, Derrick received accolades from his coaches because of the fact that 75% of the time he limited the separation between he and the person he was covering. Your problem is you are not talking to an average fan, you are talking to a fan who is in the know. I don’t have an axe to grind with Campbell, but I know are a lot of people trying to force feed Campbell, and skewing stats and scenarios to accomplish their goal. The fact is Barnes is the better linebacker and Campbell still has a lot to learn as identified by the 2 stiff arms to the ground I wrote about. That should not happen to a first round linebacker. As far as perpetuating your podcast, no I am correcting your errors so fans can know the truth.

Cool. Thanks for educating all of us without showing any film to back it up, and just relying on PFF or conjecture to support it. You're welcome to show the film that backs up your opinion. I actually like Barnes as an ILB and over 6 weeks ago called for him to be used as a 9 tech rather than Campbell, which would be better usage of the two. Barnes struggled in coverage last week, as well, against the Saints. But that's not something you would need to be told, I'm sure you saw it already.

I always thought highly of JRM so I'm not surprised by anything he does. As long as he's not put into position to have to deal with big and explosive players, he's very reliable. I certainly wouldn't complain about him being brought on to cover RBs during obvious passing situations. As far as Campbell goes, I don't love him as an OLB or on the line but I've been watching your videos all year so I'm pretty biased towards your view with regards to his run defense, tackling, and zone pass defense. We can see from Anzalone's improvements over the years how much there is to learn about playing mike and will so there's a lot to look forward to imo as Campbell polishes the instincts you like to highlight. Barnes to me is ok as a sam but that's all he's really good at and he's not a great finisher at the QB, I'd love to see the Lions add somebody like Boye Mafe in the offseason to either line up opposite Hutch or as a SAM.
@MilesDavis-xx8io
@MilesDavis-xx8io 9 ай бұрын
So how did Barnes earn an 84.5 PFF while playing MIKE and the the Lions had the Third best run defense. He i# the better MIKE linebacker, the problem is Campbell was an epic failure at the SAM. You are right your views have been skewed when it comes to Campbell.
@luniz4209
@luniz4209 9 ай бұрын
@@MilesDavis-xx8io PFF is more useful in aggregate than it is a precision tool. It doesn't judge by what a player is asked to do, only whether they make the plays directly in front of them. Because Barnes is a good tackler and can win on the edge pass rushing, he gets a high grade. However he routinely loses his responsibilities in pass coverage and he's frequently slower to react in either pass or run defense than either Anzalone or Campbell. He's not any sort of a difference maker. I don't mind him at Sam but he's got the least range of the 3 starters and he lacks the length of somebody like Boye Mafe who's a much better pass rusher.
@MilesDavis-xx8io
@MilesDavis-xx8io 9 ай бұрын
Yea so how do you explain the 84.5 PFF if he has the least range, the evaluaters at PFF is the same for all three linebackers and neither Anzalone or Campbell has maintained a PFF of 84.5 for 4 weeks. They also grade Barnes higher in coverage than Campbell and it is not close Campbell is 5th from the bottom overall. You guys seem to ignore the fact that Campbell got stiffed armed to the ground two weeks in a row, maybe that’s what PFF saw.@@luniz4209

Just subscribed to your channel, this is really a great video and analysis. Jack Campbell played well. I agree with you, he should play at least 40 snaps a game, and while he is a great run, stuffer, he should also be in there on passing downs. He may be the Lions most complete linebacker. The lions need to figure out a way to make the quarterback get rid of the ball more quickly; without that, give them enough time, most NFL quarterbacks are going to pick you apart. Also I think they misusing Hutchinson, they need to go back to using him the way they did last year, where he stood up off the line of scrimmage, moved him around. He’s an intuitive player. And they need to go to a 3-4-4 D, not a 4-2-5.
