Excellent video! I totally agree. I took a distillery tour of Jack Daniels a couple of years ago and they said the same thing you did. Jack Daniels is technically a bourbon whiskey, the only difference is the charcoal filtering, which doesn't disqualify it from technically being a bourbon. They just call it Tennessee whiskey for marketing purposes.

Prichard's was grandfather in because they were making and labeling their whiskey as "Tennessee Whiskey" way before the law. Back during this time, Tennessee really only had the two distilleries making whiskey. What small distilleries that were around (very few), were sourceing their whiskey.

It comes from the yeast strain they use during fermentation. Old Forester has a similar yeast strain. If you go on a tour at either place, the fermentation room smells like banana bread.

Pritchard’s was around prior to the creation of the legal distinction of Tennessee Whiskey and had already been calling their product “Tennessee Whiskey,” so they were grandfathered in.

Don’t forget that Bourbon is an American whiskey. So it’s not like calling rum tequila. So it’s also not technically wrong to call Tennessee Whiskey, which legally qualifies as a bourbon, Whiskey. The interesting thing about Whiskey is that it’s more of a category of spirits then it is a specific spirit.

No, Jack Daniel's is a Tn sour mash whiskey. They use the lincoln county process. That's the difference 😊

I think the only people who argue that JD is not bourbon are JD marketing folks. It is bourbon in the same way that all squares are parallellograms but not all parallellograms are squares. It is a subset of bourbon. Period. And yes, JD SB BP is fantastic. Always a staple on my bar.

RE: Prichards. Prichards has never used the lincoln county process. When the state of TN decided to officially list requirements for a TN whiskey, Prichards was allowed to continue their labelling as they were "gradnfathered" in.

As below, to clean it up in 2013, the state legislature legitimized the brand of TN Whiskey while also offering the exception(s) to those like Pritchards (only?), to preclude hardships and lawsuits! Not sure about Belle Meade, which is sourced in Indiana, I guess they just go with bourbon, since TN Whiskey has to be made in TN.

The primary requirement that defines bourbon as straight is if the distillate has spent a minimum of two years stored in new charred oak barrels. The only exception to this rule is corn whiskey, which is aged in uncharred or used oak barrels. Straight whiskey then is a subcategory under that broad definition, indicating that a whiskey must be aged in new, charred oak for two or more years. Every type of legally defined American whiskey can then be further classified as straight. This includes bourbon, rye, wheat, malt and others.

I don't know why people don't just come out and admit the truth: "Tennessee Whiskey" is used as a name for no better reason than state rivalry, and I am not saying that isn't a valid reason. If you are a proud Tennessee citizen, why would you want something you produce in Tennessee going by the name of something historically associated with a neighboring state? So Tennessee Whiskey absolutely qualifies as bourbon, but I don't begrudge the people of Tennessee wanting to distance themselves from a state with which they have a rivalry.
