I have to add somthing, Ive noticed alot in the martial arts community no matter who you are or what style you learn or teach, ( yes I know karate and kung fu are worlds apart) I train under a sensi whose 3rd gen Kenpo with the docs and photos and seals to prove it. However there is always drama to follow him, or anyone else who opens a school. Alot of people wont even upload to social media because of this. Master Jake is taking this mantel and the shame with it. It shows a sign of humbleness the way he doesnt disable comments or bother to retort against his haters. That in itself is a sighn of discipline and that in itself makes him appear more official to me now than ever before. So in saying this I personally would like to thank the haters of Master Jake for opening the vale to show his true character in the face of adversity. Thank you.

I like how at 4:00, he catches a roundhouse kick by letting it hit him in the side. Just... noooo. No kung fu style teaches that! If the kicker was trying to hurt you, you would have just helped him break one of your ribs with it. And then in a vast majority of the techniques, the attacker's off-hand is always off to the side doing nothing, while Jack does his 'counter'. If you are not keeping both hands occupied in your technique, then it is a garbage technique. In an actual situation, that off-hand will do something that will ruin your technique. It is not incorrect to train a technique with a willing friend, who has no intention of disrupting and countering your efforts. However, the technique itself is incorrect if it doesn't include locking up a basic disrupting/countering effort as part of it. Kung Fu has never taught how to fight against handicapped people that are missing limbs.
@torrinmaag53316 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with the whole he's a fraud sentiment, but that kick catch actually works. You're supposed to move to the side first, but once the kick lands you might as well do something with it. You'll see this all the time in muay thai
@Heimdal0016 жыл бұрын
@@torrinmaag5331 It is all about how you move the body to absorb/jam the power of the kick. A lot of martial arts have some form of it, and it can work very well. But that - the absolute, most important basis for the technique - is what Jake is not showing. He just lets it hit him in a way that would be a full force impact. I get the distinct impression that he doesn't actually know the technique in it's proper form, he just does a superficially similar-looking version.

I enjoy your videos and techniques. I have trained in a style which blends kung fu, karate and Japanese jujutsu. However, now that I am sparring I am struggling to apply my traditional martial art. I was wondering if you have already done, or will do, a video on how to apply kung fu to sparring with an emphasis on using parries/blocks and reading the opponent. I've trained in MMA so I am familiar with those methods, but, I'd like to use some of the traditional blocks and footwork etc. Just how to get them to work is my struggle. Thanks for your videos. Hope you find the time to reply.

I do think you have technique and a good physical condition. However, a lot of the movements you show are shown too structured to be applied in actual combat. While some of the applications may be adapted, the way they are portrayed in your videos would only work agains a static opponent. Also, some of the explanations you give are a little too simplified. For instance, I remember you saying that there were two ways of using a staff: either spinnning it, or using the sequences. But both the sequences and the spins are preliminary training for actual combat (spinning gets you used to move around a long weapon, while strengthening your arms and wrist). Also you once described a move that could be named either parting the horses mane, diagonally flying, or parting the sparrows tail, and these are three different moves that use a similar principle(lie.). I also remember a move you showed to defend yourself from a kid´s game (the mercy game, which is pretty much a competition of strenght between classmates, not a real street attack, and it´s easy to avoid by not grabbing the other persons hand) by using a knee strike, which is really dangerous for such a situation. Just repeating prearranged defense can only take you so far. if you are only interested in the health/meditation aspect of martial art, that is okay, but if you intend to show these moves for self defense, you should also teach how to translate these into a practical situation

@Heimdal0016 жыл бұрын
I think the 'fake lineage' argument is just a method for people to justify themselves in saying that Jake doesn't know real Kung Fu. I, personally, do not care about lineage; lineage does not determine whether someone is capable or not. However, with that said... Jake Mace's Kung Fu is really bad. All of the 'different styles' he knows are just the same one style, but with different superficial poses - which only makes me feel that he doesn't understand the underlying concepts behind any Kung Fu style at all. His Tai Chi application is always given a 'force-on-force' approach, which is almost offensively opposite to how Tai Chi application methods are supposed to work. But even an atrocious 'martial artist' can be learned from. Just pick and choose what you're learning wisely.

Real kung fu is Chinese martial arts. Shaolin-Do is Indonesian Kuntao and a bad copy of Chinese arts with no real lineage.
@loneronin68136 жыл бұрын
My issue isn't with Jake Mace practicing and teaching Kung Fu. (I'm a practitioner of different martial arts from Asian origins, and I'm white.) My issue is that he doesn't teach what he claims to. I'm not saying he isn't capable as a martial artist, he just isn't teaching the genuine article. I also think that his ideas of "self defense" are poorly done and as a result irresponsible as he could get someone hurt or killed. Also this is just a nitpick based on my suspicions as opposed to fact, (grain of salt should be taken here) but when he said he started out on KZbin while teaching hundreds of students for four hours a day, I can't help but be skeptical. All that I have read about him points to him being dishonest about his teachings and skills, while I have yet to see any evidence from him that convinces me that he is legitimate. On top of that, whenever he is challenged on his claims, he goes on a tirade about how illegitimate and untrue to proper Kung Fu teachings they are for wanting to spar, describing them as though they are nothing but thugs. Jake also refuses to talk about or show proof of the exact lineage of teachings he comes from. From what I have come to understand by way of videos from other Chinese martial arts masters, proving your lineage is part of what shows you to be a legitimate teacher of a specific style. I could be off-base on that one, but I'm going off of what I have heard in comparison to Jake's claims in his own videos. Using the excuse of, "Sparring doesn't solve anything," or, "It's not how things are done," is just a poor justification for him to maintain his career of lies. I know this comment is a bit of a tirade, but to see this level of fraudulence, especially with his technique videos that others may no doubt copy and potentially use them when their lives are on the line, is just something that I feel should be condemned. While Jake has no control over who uses what he teaches, he still bares responsibility for what he markets as effective for defending oneself. He would be better off not trying to teach self defense. If he wants to claim he is a proper Kung Fu teacher in order to maintain his fraudulent façade, that's one thing, but to purport what he does as something that will save someone's life is just dangerous and irresponsible. The problem is, he has dug this hole so deep and continues to do so that if he didn't show off some techniques that give a false notion of how to protect oneself, everything about his claims of being a skilled Kung Fu practitioner crumbles down around him. After all, why learn self defense techniques from someone who may not be fully capable of using them himself in a real fight, or even someone who can't apply the more general techniques in a sparring match, which may be the case for Jake, although that I can't speak to. That's the problem...I don't know of anyone who can speak to his actual sparring/fighting ability, and he is unwilling to prove it solely because of his lies, not out of respect for his so-called "code." So when Jake makes a video where he asks the question, "Is Jake Mace Real?," what he hopes to hear from his compiled video segments of him working out but providing nothing of any real clout or substance is his fans saying how great he is. He doesn't take criticism (even when constructive) into account, only continuing to do what he has always done...and that is perfecting his skills as a con artist who uses his race, pseudo-morality, and smug pretense of being better than the master who challenge him, thinking himself morally upright for not being wiling to prove his skills to be legitimately Kung Fu as pitiful deflections of the fact that he is anything but a liar and a manipulator. He also loves to claim that people hate on him as being a fake martial artist, when what the real issue isn't that he is a fake martial artist, it's that he is a fake Kung Fu practitioner specifically. He may have over one million subscribers, but he has earned the ire of even more people for his deceit, and rightfully so. In closing, I would honestly be overjoyed to be proven incorrect about Jake Mace in regards to his skills as well as his character, but as of yet, I'm not convinced.

I understand your concern about Kung Fu possibly dying out. I'm not a martial artist, but I follow your channel out of curiosity. I am, however, a British folk musician who sings and plays in my local pub for friends and all-comers. Over the centuries, many people have said, 'Folk music is dying out, so let's collect it for posterity'. Ah - but it wasn't dying out! Each time, a new generation of singers and other musicians emerged, and fell in love with it all over again. I'm also a white guy, but that doesn't stop me singing a blues song every now and then. I'm not Irish or Scottish either, but I still perform music from both those traditions. Things may or may not be mainstream, but where there is any kind of art form, someone will practice it. Like you, Jake! Your concern is helping with that.

One thing that's hard is if you encounter group attack & they use sharp objects (blades). Do we have to keep our weapons tucked in our pants to get ready for that? Because their attacks will be random in movement & very dangerous.

Can you do a video about the "three section nunchaku"? It was mentioned in a Karate Nerd video. I made one to experiment with, and it is much fun. Based on what I was i made it with three 5.5 inch sections connected for an overall length of 18 inches.

Lineage or ethnicity don't matter as long as you can present good content and presentation and instruction. Of course if you don't have lineage yet you pretend you have and that is another matter. As a Chinese person and kungfu fan I thank you Jake mace for well documenting and thus preserving Chinese kungfu that should be worth reserving.
@mastersusanrichards7446 жыл бұрын
Jake Mace has no linage and all his techniques are bogus! If you are indeed a chinese person and know Kung Fu then you would know that the words around Chinatown around the world is that Jake Mace is a fraud! And if you have not heard of it, then I doubt you are a chinese person!

Let's be real. There is not many Asian men doing Asian martial arts anymore. That said. Jake Mace is a real person. Traditional Arts are dying out and the tradition with it. Do not say he is fake, he isn't. He is a person just like you and I. The internet allows us to connect and explore areas within our lives. You click on his video to find some meaning. That said, he is doing awesome work. Can you do the same?
@WhiteApeMA6 жыл бұрын
He is real, as in, a person, yes. There is no issue with anything of that sort. He's in good shape, and is indeed capable of being great in the martial arts. In fact, there isn't even anything inherently wrong with what he is doing here in and of itself... PROVIDED he were not claiming to teach the traditional Chinese martial arts. If he were to say "my interpretation of" or "my exercises based on so-and-so style," anything like that, there would be no problem. The part people are mad about is what he is claiming to know when he does not. This is why people want to know his lineage. Without being taught he simply has no business teaching. It is a great disrespect. Imagine claiming to be a leading pianist who specializes in Mozart's music, but in reality only plays good enough to fool nonmusicians. And the people who actually do know, see that he never actually plays any Mozart songs at all. Only he is essentially spitting on an entire culture in this way. You see?

Interesting...Never thought about the elderly traditional martial artists dying out....we are facing a similiar issue with our Native speakers in Canada and Usa. Traditional Languages are dying out as well....in fact over 70% of Native languages are lost, without First speakers.

Don't worry about ignorant comments here Sir, you're actions, and form speak for themselves. I'd like to see some of these guys perform these techniques, bet they won't ,because they take skill and flexibility and both of those take years to master.
@wolfbuchanan20136 жыл бұрын
If I have to explain why Martial Artists use the words Sir and Ma'am, you wouldn't understand. It not only shows respect for others ,but also displays self respect and manners, and no self respecting Martial Artist would take time arguing these comments.
@WhiteApeMA6 жыл бұрын
My apologies if my comment came off as disrespectful. What I mean to say is that clearly there is noticeable consistency in the positive comments to Jake. A level of consistency that does not look quite natural. That's all. And you would be right to show respect, one martial artist to another, provided Jake here... were a martial artist and not a fraud.
