Also, 5 years being vegan in Japan and yes it implies lots of home cooking but if you can read Japanese there are actually quite a lot to find at the supermarket or in izakayas. I have no trouble eating anywhere besides specialized restaurant (ramen/monja/hot pot restaurant etc. Are difficult but you’d be surprise I eat quite well at yakiniku places!) also Tokyo is getting more and more friendly with at least vegetarians, we even finally have vegan menus at Tokyo Disney resort! But anyways if I had the time I would make a blog about living in Tokyo as a vegan but it’s kind of difficult at the time. (Also, if anyone reading this wants to experience an amazing Shojin Ryori/Buddhist cuisine vegan restaurant, please please go at “BON” close to Ueno. We celebrated my son’s omiyamairi (first visit to the temple, similar to a catholic baptism) and ate there with the whole family (Japanese and French side both reunited) and it was one of the best food experience we ever had even for the whole non-vegan family!

Yeah, veganism and vegetarianism are pretty much just social trends, or personality accessories, anyway. The only reason for their being is because some people are extremely sensitive to the reality of organisms consuming other organisms and how it can be a bit harsh to witness when you've never witnessed it before. That and it can make you appear virtuous and noble when you wear them as titles or badges of honor to be displayed to others. I mean, it's a free world and people can do as they please, I don't care. But, a balanced diet of meats, vegetables, and some kind of clean carbohydrate(whether a starch or other vegetables that contain lots of it) is pretty much the gold standard. *shrugs*

I remember seeing a group of them passing in front of the station at Fukushima. The locals' bewildered expressions were priceless.

Thanks for making a video with specifically vegan food! That's one of the only things that worries me about going to Japan some day, I know my options will be pretty limited. Any suggestions on where the best place to go in Japan might be in terms of vegan food or restaurants?

Thank you!! Really appreciate it! The tip of the vegan dashi alternative is also quite helpful.

I'm vegetarian and I enjoy any kind of videos you make really. Despite not eating meat its still interesting to see what people DO eat regardless of my own beliefs. I'm going to Japan next summer and I'm slightly worried about accidentally eating meat or fish so I've gotta teach myself some phrases before I go lol

Very cool. I've always heard it's extremely difficult to find vegan food in Japan. You can make it work anywhere you go I think :)
@brewbrewbrewthedeck41386 жыл бұрын
Extremely difficult? Maybe if you're someone with zero cooking skills, utterly incapable of supporting yourself and 100% reliant on eating processed food from supermarkets or restaurants. Virtually any vegan dish you can make elsewhere you can also make in Japan. In short: Just don't be lazy and you'll be fine.
