The church is referring to its people, not the building. The Matthew 16:18 verse where Jesus says "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church", the word "church" is translated from the Greek word "ekklesia" which means "assembly", "called-out" or "congregation". This is referring to the church as people, not an institution or a building. The church are its people, not the buildings.
