Sarge's is probably the only reasonably popular restaurant in all of NYC where you can order coleslaw over a pastrami and corned beef sandwich and not be asked by the staff (and maybe by a customer) to leave the premises -- post haste! Although such sacrilege upon a perfect piece of brisket is ordered fare in S. Jersey and Philidelphia, it is not ordered that way by self-respecting New Yorkers! Compounding your gastronomic faux pas was giving the sandwich at Sarge's your highest score, despite that the rye bread there crumbled out of your hands upon immediately being touched. The only ones who rave about their pastrami and corned beef are the tourists who eat there, which entails most of their customers. The attempt by two west-coasters to seriously critique a NY culinary staple like the pastrami sandwich rang hollow. It was tantamount to my going to Los Angeles -- or San Diego -- to preside over and bestow the Blue Ribbon Award for the best tacos. Bruce Rutherford

Oh come on! What kind of fair and equitable taste testing is this? All four sandwiches needed to be identical: Sliced rye bread, pastrami, corned beef, and NYC style deli mustard. That should have been it for all four sandwiches. If the restaurant could not produce that it should not have been included in the test. You are in NYC for crying out loud and you couldn't find four restaurants that could do that? Out of all the delicatessens in NYC?

the pastrami on rye at katzs with mustard for me is the best sandwich in the country hands down, if im within 100 miles of NYC im making the trip every time and I dont like NYC at all, I sometimes hate it. the traffic and the amount of people never mind the sick parking situation. but then theres the pastrami and the corned beef, Dont get them Together on the same sandwich thats just wrong. the knish and hot dogs with mustard and kraut are a must, i think the cream and black cherry sodas are like $3,50 a can I havent been in over a year thinking of taking a trip soon. oh btw last time i was there with my wife and daughter we spent over $125 we left with a smile. there are alot of tourist for sure but the real new yorkers are there in big numbers trust me im 48 i been going since i was 10 the food has not changed. I want my last meal on this earth to be a katzs pastrami on rye with mustard and slip the cutter a 5er and tell him to make it MEAN and LEAN !!! that 1st bite youll know what pastrami should be. so is $25 alot for a sandwich ? As a native New Yorker, come on guys. This comparison is all over the place and inconsistent. A pastrami and corned beef sandwich at one place, just Pastrami at another and a Ruben at a third place. Rye bread, French banquet, vegetables, mustard, Russian dressing and sauerkraut. Russian dressing and sauerkraut is a Ruben which is a different sandwich style that will always be less dry. If you’re going to do a comparison of NYC best pastrami and/or corned beef sandwiches keep it consistent. Have a pastrami or a corned beef sandwich on Rye with mustard (the standard) at each deli. Also no offense to the guy from California that doesn’t like mustard but the pastrami sandwiches in Cali are as good as world famous Katz’s Deli (the oldest deli in the US)? You’re crazy. Ive spent a significant amount of time in Central and Southern California, the sandwiches don’t even come close. They are diner quality at best.

My yelp review of Sarges. We really enjoy watching you but have to respectfully disagree with you about Sarge's. "Ate here last Thursday, so disappointed. Service was slow and only 3 tables had patrons including ours. Waitress was distant and cold. Food was expensive, 25.00 per sandwich (2) fries, 1 wine, 70.00 plus tip. We saw Here Be Barr on youtube who said Sarges was better than Katz, not even close. The pastrami was like chipped pastrami which hurt the overall flavor for us. Bread was on the dry side not soft and pillow-ee like Katz. The fries we very good. We regret not having gone to Katz instead. "

Katz's Deli IS great, and the sandwiches WILL fill you up. But it's also a definite tourist trap, in part because Meg Ryan's famous "orgasm" scene in "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed there. There's even a sign over the table indicating where she & Billy Crystal sat during the scene. Also, the place is ALWAYS crowded, even on "slow" days. So, expect to sometimes sit with total strangers. I'll definitely have to try Sarge's Deli next time I'm in NYC!

i've been to restaurants that seat total strangers at the same long table: in Amish Country and in Texas, and i even worked at one. it's a great way to meet interesting people from all over and, if the food's good, the ambiance can be tremendous! so don't dismiss the practice out-of-hand, William.

Judging a sandwich by the amount or height of the meat isn’t about the sandwich at all. It’s about the meat. Judging a sandwich should include all of its component parts, i.e., meat, mustard, Russian dressing, cheese, onions, any side items - an extremely sour, garlicky pickle, one that tastes like it just got fished out of a barrel and is so soft when you bite into it that you know it’s been in that barrel for quite a while, is absolutely ESSENTIAL to lending cred to the whole sandwich experience. But most important to the quality of the sandwich, besides the meat but just as important, is the bread chosen to encase the whole megilla. IMO from a childhood consuming pastrami and corned beef sandwiches every time we went to Brooklyn to visit the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, we would make time for a sandwich and an egg cream at a neighborhood deli. I’ve eaten Katz’s deli sandwiches enough to know that I don’t like them. First of all, the bread is the absolute worst for the kind of sandwich that Katz’s tries to impress you into paying $25 for: it doesn’t have that thin, hard, shiny crust that keeps it together, and it definitely doesn’t have the rye flour mixed in and the wealth of caraway seeds strewn all through the dough. I’m talking about an Old Country, Old World, Jewish Rye Bread. Like sourdough, it’s sturdy, sturdy enough to keep your sandwich from falling apart, ever. It should be a peasant bread, a rye bread worthy of the adjective “Jewish.” The only sandwich that used bread close to what a sandwich should use, was the third place, the $10 sandwich. It wasn’t REAL Jewish rye, but it had visible caraway seeds, the crust looked right, and it kept everything in one piece. Didn’t y’all even notice how all the breads just fell to pieces?Every time the bread looked like that, I could hear Patsy Cline wailing “I Fall To PIECES.” What about the mustard, another deli sandwich essential that went barely noticed? One place, maybe the third one, mentioned an anchovy mustard. Now THAT sounds interesting. But other than that one utterance, nothing. The mustard that I saw was yellow, the nebbishy yellow American mustard that couldn’t clear your sinuses like a good horseradish mustard would. There’s little more to say. You don’t close your eyes and pick a few delis blindfolded, unaware of what they offer. Besides, the best meat to judge a REAL deli on is beef tongue; a good tongue sandwich is, again IMO, the best of the best. But I’m talking about old-timey sandwiches and old-timey delis. It’s definitely different today, still delicious but suited to tastes that are easily offended by strong tastes like raw onions and by freshly-grated horseradish so intense that if you were within a room’s length from the kitchen you would be weeping. Nevertheless, sandwiches are my favorite method of food-to-mouth delivery. Many people around the world say that the best sandwich, hands down, is the dőner kebab. I’ve seen it prepared on lots of KZbin videos; it looks interesting enough to be worth a try from you, Jon Barr. Oy vey, it’s 3:45am! Where does the time go?

New York prices are ridiculous. What theyre doing is criminal. Pay 1400 $ for an apt the size of a bathroom and 25$ for sandwiches. What the hell is the minimum wage in NY ? $40/hr.?????? You gotta lay out $400/wk for a hole in the wall and the food must be around $500/wk. So, you gotta be taking home at leat $1400/wk. Does everyone there work on Wall St? What happened to the poor? Were they shipped out of the city? I'd like to understand all this shit. I used to live there and none of this crap was going on at the time. Then one day (about ten years ago) I saw the rent ads on the Village Voice and realized sadly that I could never go back. In ten more years, those Katz's sandwiches will cost $50 and the tiny litlle crappy apartments will cost $2400. Where the fuck does it end?

Many of you have obviously NEVER eaten at a decent deli and are complaining about the prices and have likely spent 25 on a good steak or a couple sushi rolls. A proper deli sandwich at what is considered a good deli - is gonna set you back a bit. 25 IS on the high side as far as deli sandwiches go - but some of the best in Los Angeles - where I live - are $20. But the coleslaw and or sauerkraut or other parts need to be top notch to make it worth it, including a good potato salad on the side or breakfast potatoes (recommended instead of fries if they have good potatoes).

I have long liked Sarge's, which is in my neighborhood. After watching this video -- and having my seasonal cholesterol check -- I decided to misbehave and try the corned beef and pastrami sandwich these guys were raving about. I regret to report that I was underwhelmed. The meat seemed fatty and not that flavorable, and because the sandwich is SO humungous, you can''t get a complete bite at one time of all ingredients to give you the full flavor. As another reviewer here pointed out, the bread is rather flimsy, so I had to give up eating the sandwich in my hands and took to a fork and knife to prevent making a complete mess. I finished just one half of the sandwich in the restaurant and took the other home to eat for dinner the next night. I had the same reaction -- fatty meat, not a treat, especially for the $26 price tag. In fact, I threw the last quarter of the sandwich out. It's been years since I've been to Katz's, but I seem to recall liking their pastrami sandwich better. Just sayin'!

I hate the crods there - I hate the chairs there, and I certainly don't like the prices there. BUT! If you want a knish - square or round, or a latka and a Dr. Brown's and a real pickle, a pastrami sandwich which is better than ***. Katz's- before Paris, before a trip to the moon, before you win the lottery and before you die. (I do not own, nor am I in any way affiliated with this old place. I'm not even Jewish.)

*Attended high school a few blocks away from Katz's deli. in the early '70s, my personal opinion is Katz's, whenever I make the mecca to N.Y.C. that's my first stop, thanks for the upload, fantastic reporting to a well-made video!*

The ONLY reason I wish I could go to NY is for the delicatessens. Thanks for this video. Please do Italian deli serving a meatball sandwich on sourdough bread. Do they HAVE sourdough in NY?

PNonone talks about Katz's dining room. The back room. As of '21,while waiting in line with a group of four, look for the waiters coming out front to find the groups. Table service in the back dining room.

2nd Ave deli was the best I have even visited,, but it was so long ago it was on 2nd Ave. (I moved upstate.) I liked that it was not a tourist trap. The atmosphere was completely different from all the others. More real. I will visit the new location when I return.

I don't think your commenters realize how thick these sandwiches are pricing seems to be about the same as when I lived in nyc 1954-1992. To bad you missed out on Carnegie deli it came in at over 1lb meat yum. One night I grabbed one and hit a film at Carnegie movie theater opened up the sandwich during the trailers and the whole theater let out a collective yum and one person said now I want one. Today probably be shamed for eating meat. I left nyc in 92 to sail the world. Your vids are great never considered Katz's up there 2nd ave, sarge, up there. French roll dill anchovey mayo is not a deli sandwich. Keep up the good work.

Went to Katz because of the movie When Harry met Sally. Had two sandwiches, two drinks, fries 70 dollars. but worth it. LAST TIP, DO NOT LOSE YOUR TICKET THEY GIVE YOU. a guy did not have his ticket at neighboring table and he was there awhile trying to settle it out with the staff.

I’ve been too many delicatessens. 2 I recommend trying is 2nd Avenue Deli at 162 E. 33rd St. and Lido Beach Deli in Long Beach NY. Wally makes some of the best deli sandwiches in the world. Ask for the #10 it’s a combo sandwich of pastrami and corned beef. Yummy.

This is in my wheelhouse - Katz's is where we should've gone after the meet-up!

The Fillmore deli's small Pastrami on Rye sandwich for $10. I usually grab a sandwich for lunch and return to the office, I'd need a nap after those monster sized sandwiches.

Years ago there was this little sandwich place in Detroit that had corn beef that would just MELT in your mouth... They served it on onion bun… Everything was SUPER FRESH... Haven't tasted anything like it since... From New York to Los Angeles...

I have to disagree with you, Katz's is much better than Sarge's. I went to both and there's no comparison. Katz's is melt in your mouth good, try their Ruben pastrami sandwich 👌🏾

I`m a Hell`s Kitchen boy, so I`m familiar with good deli....I only eat these monsters a couple of times a year, I put them into the same category as an expensive bottle of wine or Champagne....Thanks for sharing your video, it rocks !

It's spendy but the pastrami on rye is very good. You will take some back to mid-town. I have not tried Sarges but maybe soon!
