Short of running this game inside a fricking RAM disk i could not see how this game's stutters could be fixed. Now this game used the OGRE engine wich means one could potentially look under the hood and (somehow???) fix the issue wether by patching the executable or something else. Great video btw!

There had been attempts (some good, specially by SCARaw, some bad) to optimize meshes, textures, scripts, engine features, GPU tweaks. So far, they really help, but the problem is the engine itself sadly.

Thanks very much! Yes OGRE could be the root of the issue, hard to say for certain. I was hoping we would eventually get someone very familiar with that graphics engine and a mod/patch to fix it. Ah well, at least NVME speeds can reduce it.

Disclaimer I don't claim to be an expert but I found a lot of things about this so here's what I do know. In my goal to try to make my own game that is similar to kenshi I found a lot of issues. First off as I see has already been discussed here the original ogre graphics engine definitely has a part to play in this and how it handles its load. There is a newer version of ogre called ogre next I don't think anyone's going to be porting over to that anytime soon but it does exist and it does run better. Second there is an issue with directX that would take me too long to explain but they refuse to fix it and it causes problems with a lot of different games and not enough people know about it to complain about it so nobody can force them to fix it. There is a project in the kenshi workshop where people are trying to compress the size of the textures in the game which from what I understand does help a lot I don't know if they've compressed all textures yet but I know it's still ongoing, and it in theory should definitely improve the game running. The only thing that I found to improve the longer stutters is to stop the character from running and let it finish loading and it loads much quicker it's not much of a suggestion but I know it works.

I appreciate your insights. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see Kenshi ported to the newer OGRE engine sometime after Kenshi 2 is completed. Kenshi “remastered” perhaps. Probably easier than doing a port to Unreal.

I think it struggles when using VRAM . I am curious if it gets better with something like a 3060Ti. Anything latest with 12GB of VRAM. I have the 1660Ti and it does struggle with loading, and I had it crash one time. was a memory issues but I never checked the logs. I just chalk it up to the Ogre engine and not being optimized very well. Amazing game.

Agreed, amazing game with a healthy dose of janky engine issues. As far as I understand, the devs of OGRE make an effort to point out that it’s a graphics rendering engine, not a game engine. So there could be additional game engine components not playing nice with graphics renderer, just a wild guess with little knowledge. Their forums are an interesting read if you are into gamedev. I get the impression the devs are still active there.

NvME vs SATA SSD bottleneck is on small random block reads like 4kB. NvME is still better but not by 6 times as rough bandwidth of sequential read would suggest

Thanks for the insight. Kenshi probably has a fair amount of small or compressed textures to read when streaming world assets.

@@anecessaryweevil It's just the engine doesn't run well with Windows 10 for me. I used to play it on Windows 8.1 and it ran like a Dream.

@@JJATH Im playing on windows 10 version 1709 and works good. It does crash when I exit the game but has not affected anything. Its an older version I never updated due to having issues updating it. Only a few games wont work on this version but everything else has been stable.

I play this on Windows 10 a few times a month. Never had any issues. Regardless it is highly unlikely the game itself bluescreened you and I would honestly look toward other causes first. Are you the type of person to have multiple programs open at the same time but don't have the RAM to sustain it? The only possible thing I can imagine causing a bluescreen to do with this game is if you exceeded your RAM capabilities.
