Is Kenya's New University Funding Model A Pain In The Neck?

2009 KCSE candidate I scored A- Kibaki was president in 2011 when I joined law school. I was not categorised into any band. I grew up in an orphanage so Kibaki government gave me full scholarship with 60+ HELB. Ruto should restore the education factory settings to previous model. He is not a saviour but a megalomaniac psychopath what problem was being cured by the model? There was no teething issues. The crunch on the government coffers should be shifted to the shoulders of adults not innocent but brilliant hopeful poor kids who have defeated money with brains.

The problem is that universities can no longer survive under the old model, because 1. inflation has increased in the last 15 years , fees had to be adjusted one way or another 2. universities have increased from 20 to over 70 increasing competition for the few parallel students available, 3.universities are saddled with heavy debts and parallel programmes are almost dead right now. This funding model isnt good, but there are few alternatives since universities can no longer survive under the old model 😢

The point is that there is a lack of planning for the growing student population. In fact, Kenya has never planned for anything. For instance, with proper planning, there ought to have been no employment crisis for graduates. Where are economic planners, infrastructure planners, gender and youth planners, and education planners? :15

The bursary fund should be channelled to education and all levels of borrowing from mp, MCA and any form burned .

Since HEF was introduced there have been a lot of confusion for us parents. I hope changes will be made soon to accommodate students from poor background.

44+ cluster points means As in the four subjects for instance in law school I had 45.5 cluster from A in Mathematics, A in History, A in Biology, A- in English and A- Business studies. If I had a c in any of these I couldn't make it to KU. So Kent university is for a C failed student. A government sponsored student faces competition from his equally brilliant peers with As you can be locked out of law school in UON or KU due to cluster points or too many As above you. It's a serious issue

fact the system is a fraud just like Ruto's project. there is not one single student that has been categorized into band 1,2,3 my brother who is has no job no income, son was called to do engineering, his son was categorize into band 5 , the boy cannot go to university

Discrimination and thwart of legitimate expectations of an A student from poor background who has already passed. If someone is not qualified for the degree in medicine or law, why not make parallel more expensive even if it's 500k let it be 2 million for a self sponsored but free for the government sponsored while helb streams in for the A student. Other thrumming is unnecessary.

@@erastuswangai2157 why? Because you want to score a C+ n end up in law school with me and A student? At the same parameters? You should pay the millions gap for failing in high school. This will discourage intellectual laziness, nonage and spur innovation thinking. Also a national examination body is needed for the universities to prevent cheating sex with lecturers for grades and bribery for transcript. Education n money have never been friends that's why rich people kids fail KCSE but by magic pass university even bar exams in Kenya? Including Nick Ruto & Githu Muigais daughter all passing but in high school c student would I believe their scores? Never I'm not semi-literate like many of you

In 30 years time I'll be 80, God willing. I most likely will be infirmed. I will be looking for a good Kenyan doctor made today. Stop this 'band' nonsense. Spare the students and lecturers the trouble.
