It's interesting to think about how SSU is probably closer to what Sakurai would have wanted Super Star to look. Context is that in his video talking about the OG game, Sakurai admitted the abundance of pre-rendered backgrounds were shoehorned in by request of the higher ups due to the popularity of Donkey Kong Country. He didn't really like the look.

@@kreckty I don’t think the original post articulates what they mean super well, but basically it wasn’t the fact that the OG SS used pre-rendered visuals that sakurai disliked, it was that they were abruptly forced to switch the entire game’s visual style to a format none of the developers were familiar with which ended up leaving the game’s graphics looking amateur and garish. The pre-rendered environments in SSU are far more detailed and make much better use of the style as they were made by a team with much more experience in the area and who therefore knew how to get the most out of the style.

Shinya Kumazaki's debut as the Director was actually Canvas Curse, a spinoff title which came before Superstar Ultra, and introduced some things which are staples to the series to this day, like Soul bosses.

A small note about Helper to Hero that you didn’t mention is that it has some added difficulty due to you being locked into the helper you choose. You can't change powers like you can in The Arena. It also encourages you to master each copy ability by keeping track of which helpers have won and whether they did it solo or with a friend.

I really miss how Kirby changed color depending on his copy ability, it just added so much more character to many of them. But I guess HAL didn't want kids to get confused on where Kirby is, (not that I ever had that problem). It hurts the look of powers like Stone and Ice. I also found it funny how Meta Knight is working to take down his own ship in the Metaknightmare campaign, but it's a shame they skipped the final boss. If only there was a dark version of himself for him to fight...

Obviously not, but this video got me thinking about this game again, and i gotta say: Like most people, i used to think Ultra was such a perfect remake that it completely replaced OG in every way. In recent years though, i've come to appreciate the SNES version a lot more than before, and found out there's a lot of aspects in which i prefer it over the remake. Like the visuals and artstyle, for starters, which even Sakurai dislikes and regrets doing, deeming them ugly and unfitting for a Kirby game, and while i get why, i've always disagreed. Something about the 90s CG-rendered backgrounds and enviroments just works. It makes´´dreamy´´ levels like Mallow Castle and Pumpkin Grand feel a lot more surreal and, well, dream-like, while giving levels like the Halberd and Old Tower this grittier, more realistic vibe, and i really like that contrast. The DS version is a lot cleaner and more colorful by comparison. And this also applies to sprites and character designs, Almost everyone feels more expressive in the remake, Captain Vul especially, he used to be hilariously emotive in the intercom chat, but the remake made all of his sprites less cartoony and exaggerated for some reason, and that's just one instance of many. Then there's the music, and while all of the new songs made for Ultra are great, some of the tracks from the original were completely butchered in the transition to the DS. Crystal Caves, Meta Knight's Theme and Nova's Core being the biggest offenders, they just sound terrible. But i can almost forgive it for just for Galacta Knight's theme. And lastly, the cutscenes, i actually think they are worse than on SNES by a large margin, biggest example i can think of is the intro to RoMK. That very last shot used to be pretty stylish and deliberately animated, while in the remake it's just a character model standing around, and this same problem applies to some of the others, i feel. Besides that i liked the physics and the way some moves worked in the original more, like other commenters have already pointed out, and the old script was also a bit funnier even if it was a bad translation and the new one is objectively better (i've always loved ''KIRBY, THIS IS IT, PREPARE TO DIE'' more than ''Come meet your doom'' and ''ACK, YOU CHICKENS!'' over ''Alright you lot...'') For all of those reasons, i now feel like the best way to experience this game is playing through the SNES versions in it's entirety (or at least up to Milky Way Wishes) and then switch to the remake with a savefile that has all the new stuff unlocked, which is as easy as can be currently thanks to certain means, that's definitely how i will be coming back to it at least.

I highly appreciate the overall statement of the video - the remake does not replace the original, and one is free to like either better. In the Kirby community, I see a lot of people who believe that the existence of Ultra makes the original completely obsolete, and shoot down people who genuinely do enjoy the original better for perfectly valid reasons. I for one enjoy playing Ultra more than the original, but that is from a purely subjective standpoint, as all opinions are at the end of the day.

While Ultra is a solid remake, and I do like it, I still personally greatly prefer the original by a pretty wide margin. It's hard to exactly qualify, but part of it is completely subjective (I just like the way the original looks/sounds better) but another is the controls just do not feel as good in Ultra. I've tried playing it on a wide variety of DS consoles, and it never felt quite as solid or responsive as the original. Another more subjective part is the controls are mapped terribly: A as jump, B as attack is awful on a diamond layout, and it is really difficult to play comfortably, and there's no option to change it to the B jump/ Y attack that is much more comfortable. I will admit, especially in Helper to Hero and True Arena, my insticts betrayed me and I'd end up attacking when I meant to jump. Maybe I should try it on an emulator with a remappable controller layout sometime?

One of the little things I love in the snes original release that is missing in the ds remake is that when using the ninja ability kirby cannot fly out of his kick on the ds title while keeping horizontal momentum (so long as you’re not holding left or right directions after canceling the kick with flight) like he could on the snes. This I’m pretty sure was intentionally designed or at least left in the original even if it comes across as a glitch of sorts, since in one of the stages of the relay race game ninja is available alongside a handful of other abilities that can give kirby fast horizontal movement. You also can’t cancel out of some moves of certain copy abilities, like shielding with the ice ability after using the blizzard attack after running to quickly end the move, allowing you to repeatedly run and attack, cancel and then run again to effectively spam the move if you wanted to, or just to do something else more quickly. And I wholeheartedly feel the same way. Movement and a sense of agility with kirby feels that much more nuanced on the snes version. That isn’t to say the ds remake feels bad, but it’s rather noticeable. I find it results in making the remake feel oddly claustrophobic at times, at least where in tighter sections and corridors of the game. It changes the impression of how levels come across and how they feel to navigate.

Great video! While ultra is a fantastic remake, they did leave behind some of the more obscure tech from the original game, such as ice kirbys dash being able to be mashed to move super fast, or being able to jump/dash out of the dash attack animation. Def a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but it is a unique trait of the og game that ultra doesnt have.

Your discussion of the mindset that remakes should replace the originals reminds me of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, which mostly only include content from the original games. I remember seeing people complain at the time that they didn't include the new content from the GBA versions of the games that got them, but assuming Final Fantasy 1 is representative of the rest, the content from the GBA releases is kind of awful and its inclusion, in my opinion, would have worsened the remasters. I'm probably rambling, but I think getting the content from the base game right is more important than including everything from past rereleases, especially when said content isn't very important. (That's also part of why I was more disappointed than upset by the lack of certain things from the initial release of Persona 3 Reload, though that's made a bit worse by the fact that I like that game less overall than Persona 3 FES and Reload's DLC campaign being significantly changed for the worse compared to its counterpart from FES.)

I still think it’s pretty solid even to this day. This was after all the first ever Kirby game I have actually played since I did not owned an snes back then. I did play it on virtual console and honestly comparing the two, I prefer the ds version a bit more, not just because of nostalgia bias, but also because some of the bosses like dyna balde & wham bam rock look much better to me design wise compared to their super star looks, as well as the music choices being more fitting for them as well. But hey that’s just me ^^

I prefer the more dynamic and less soft art style of the original, but especially the cutscenes. While they can't be called 'objectively' better, using sprites creates a much stronger sense of coherence with the main gameplay, as well as just looking cleaner and bolder in its own right than muddy, low-resolution FMV. I almost want to say the SNES cutscenes have 'aged better' but the DS ones weren't really even good at the time, and I think the only period in gaming history where they would have even temporarily have been considered good would have been on the PS1 or Saturn. Obviously Ultra is worth playing for its additional post-game content. However, on top of better sound quality and a single-screen co-op format that makes you feel more connected to the other player, I would much prefer to play the main game on SNES.

I'm actually someone that believes Super Star is kind of overrated as a whole. My favroute gamemodes in the game are entirely the new ones introduced for Ultra and I just don't think the macro-game style works much for Kirby with each game feeling more like a world with it's own seperate gimmick. That said, I do understand why so many people enjoy the game and there are things about teh orginal I do think are better than the remake but for me if I'm playing Super Star or Ultra, I'm there for Dedede's Revenge or Meta Knightmare. They take what I liked and add challenge and fun to the game. I do think that a lot of the games do have interesting concepts, but they're also so short that they don't really get time to flesh them out all that much but that's just me.

To be fair I think that the purpose of remakes really is to replace the original, at least from a development standpoint, because why do that when you could just port the original game as is? Though this is barring cases where the remake is made on hardware restrictions compared to the original like TWEWY, or mostly made to prove something in the new console like SM64DS. And I agree that in any way one should pay respects to the original game.

Pretty much is the best Kirby game to get if you want to get into the series. All time best Kirby either way just nailed everything down to a t. The only thing I wish is that it could get another remake like pokémon did with red and blue and be able to remake the cinematics. That would be my dream remake more than anything else! Honestly if it wasn't for the Diamond and Pearl remakes that were pretty bad, I would have said those were my dream remakes that would have happened but now ended up being a generic, bland looking game

One big bad thing about Ultra: the audio is actual garbage. And not just the compressed music tracks, the sound effects are a garbled mess of bit crushed bursts. It's specially a shame because the original had such crisp, satisfying audio, some of the best in the system, due to it being such a late game.

I haven't played either version but I know the reputation and with that title I was coming in expecting a hot take 😆 really good video explaining why it's such a good remake, would be interested in a video on Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe because I think that is a pretty phenomenal remake as well, there is very little to criticize there IMO other than Dedede using his forgotten land model which sucks. Magolor epilogue is really interesting because even with its non-traditional and fairly subtle method of storytelling it pulls together a character arc for Magolor between places you would have previously assumed are just non-canon.

Something the remake added that was so obvious in hindsight that i was shocked the original never had it (despite growing up with the original): ability stars. Basically in Ultra you press the Select button and you drop an ability star just like every other Kirby game, EXCEPT for the original Superstar! Its such a nice addition because it feels like it should have been there all along. I never noticed its absence because KSS was my first Kirby game and by the time I played Ultra i had played tons of other Kirby games but not the original in awhile, so when the Switch added KSS i decided to play that version again after so long and was very confused how to easily switch powers without creating a helper. In the original the only way to drop an ability star is getting hit! I also remember them changing something else about how Helpers work, but I'm not sure what it was. But something about them is more convenient than before.

Are you having difficulty getting 100% or just beating it at all? If you are just confused where to go, there is mostly only a single path forward (minecart sections are progress) but in the big castle area, the castle can be entirely skipped if you go to the bottom left door of the screen (door isn't attached to the castle to be clear). If you are going for 100% you should know there are 2 secret entrances into the castle as well that lead to other areas (one of them is mostly a shortcut though). And certain treasures require advanced knowledge of the powers, like how plasma can go through walls with a certain charge level, or how the fire ability can't be used underwater, except for the burning leo helper. So using a helper helps you light fuses underwater.

Yeah, it is much worse, an awful remake. I grew up with both super stars and blatantly preferred the more eye-catching, better sounding, more fun feeling game. Ultra has boring, generic, and less soulful graphics, MUCH worse physics, horrible audio, and the new content doesn't blend well with the original and feels almost fangame-like. Only reason to ever play Ultra is for helper to hero and that's a stretch.
