This experiment is very similar to a ballistic pendulum which was used in the olden days to measure a projectile’s velocity. The device consisted of a suspended block of wood of known mass and a scale to measure the height the wooden block reached after a bullet was fired in to it. The velocity of the combined block and bullet could be calculated from the height they reached, the mass of the block and bullet could be determined from their weights and from these numbers the momentum of the combined block and bullet could be calculated. Since momentum is conserved the momentum of the bullet would equal the momentum of the combined block and bullet. Dividing the momentum of the combined block and bullet by the mass of the bullet alone gave the velocity the bullet before impact.
@josephpreston35504 ай бұрын
That's fascinating, I always wondered how they calculated velocity "back in the day" before electronics and chronographs. Thank you for taking the time to share that.
@josephpreston35504 ай бұрын
In this case, since the bullet does not remain with the plate, there may be an effect where there is sort of a maximum amount it's going to make the plate swing. So we see a difference up to a certain point, then after that a lot of the bullet's energy squirts by the plate as it deflects upwards instead of being transferred into it (unlike the wood block where 100% of the energy would be transferred). This protects the plate and its mechanism from damage, but it does mean there is an upper bound on the energy that the mechanism can display for us.

one thing that i found useful for adjusting a load for the purpose was shooting bowling pins at a weekly match, the pins when they get heavy, lumpy and a lil tenderized later on may need a bit more assertive shove to broom off the table, too much velocity and you'd leave em standing with a cloud of toothpicks behind them, not enough and they may not clear the table later on. i found 9mm to struggle, 38 super with the same caliber but heavier bullet moving a bit faster was ok, so was 357sig, 45acp and 44mag fine for the whole match without issue, 357mag with wad cutters would nicely swat em off the table, didn't have a 10mm back when i was competing but i suspect it be in the 357mag/45acp range or better. but nothing, deleted the pins quite like the round i shot with a crack barrel 45-70, reloads between my fingers quigley style, beaning the RO with the ejected brass over my shoulder, pins flying a solid 10-15 yards before they hit the floor and skipped up the ramp into the bullet trap.....like hot rodders say, "theirs no replacement for displacement" guessing a shotgun would be similar performance, but we didn't wanna try that at the indoor range

@seanseoltoir4 ай бұрын
I seem to remember that they used a similar mechanical device for measuring the velocity of a bullet a long time ago (i.e. before we had electronic ballistic chronographs). I think there was a mechanism that would allow the target / swing arm to go back and then lock in place or move some marker that would remain at the furthest point that the pendulum reached. The system worked on the principle of conservation of momentum which would allow them to calculate the velocity.
@willdejong77634 ай бұрын
Yeah. To be accurate they needed to catch the bullet completely, not let any bounce off. Also need to know the masses of both the bullet and the moving portion of the target.
@seanseoltoir4 ай бұрын
@@willdejong7763 -- Agreed... I did a bit of web searching and found the name of it -- "ballistic pendulum"... Just in case anyone is curious to read about it and the math involved... From what I gathered, it relied on the fact that the height that a pendulum reaches is going to depend upon its speed when it is pointing down. So, by measuring the distance it travels, they would know the speed of the pendulum and by knowing the mass of the pendulum, they would know it's momentum. Since momentum is conserved, as long as they knew the mass of the projectile, they could then calculate the speed of the projectile. Another system that was supposedly used consisted of two paper targets rotating on a single axis a certain distance apart. By measuring the difference between where the bullet hit on the two targets and knowing the rotational speed of the targets, the velocity of the bullet could be calculated.

I have always understood "knockdown power" and "stopping power" as the ability to stop and drop a target on impact. The target, whether deer or enemy soldier, drops when it is hit. They do not keep running, keep assaulting, or keep fleeing, they drop. My grandfather had been familiar with the weapons of the Korean War and spoke of the 1911 .45 as did his brother in law, my great uncle, a Marine during Vietnam and an Air Force Security Police NCO for the entire time I knew him before his death. My great uncle had seen action in jungle and in the streets of Boston. He was a lso a gunsmith and owned several 1911's and had a .45 conversion kit for his AR. They had shared with me that the devastation of a .45 was different than that of a .38 or .357 because those rounds were faster and did not expend their energy in the flesh. A .45 didn't keep going out the other side and all of that energy was used in the flesh of the target. The mass and width of the slug deposited all of its force in the soft flesh and bone rather than zipping through and causing only a hole and cavitation channels. I know some will argue this. Whatever. Both my uncle and grandfather used .30/.30s to hunt deer stating that it was unnecessary to use a .308 in our very wooded rural area. It was a waste of energy and you were still responsible for the bullet when it continued out the other side of the deer. We hunted in the bush, not in fields. Much of the data I read in early 2000s supported the .45 and .40 as being perfect manstopping rounds. I worked for a Vietnam era Navy SEAL for a couple of years after high school. When discussing the rising popularity of the Desert Eagle .50 he stated gruffly, "F@c&ing ego. You don't need anything more than a .45acp. Best f@c&ing man k!ll!er there is. Shoot someone with a 9mm and they keep running. I seen it. Shoot someone with a .45 and they f@c&ing hit the ground. Hit someone with a .45 in the arm then their arm falls off then they hit the ground." As an owner of 9mm, .357, and a .45 I always feel best protected with my .45.
@willdejong77634 ай бұрын
I'm no expert on this, but a lot of what you said here makes sense with what I've read/seen elsewhere. I think the key is that "stopping power" is tied to the amount of energy delivered to the target. And bullets that zip through a target without slowing down much are not going to have as much stopping power. But I also think it is important to consider the difference between bullet types. For a given caliber, a FMJ is not going to have the same stopping power as a JHP. The hollow point's expansion helps increase the energy transfer, wound channel size, and pressure wave travelling through the target.
@bryansimmons45504 ай бұрын
That's funny! I knew someone who was shot in the upper arm with a .45ACP and their arm didn't fall off. A person will normally instantly drop from a handgun round only if they take a brain or spine shot, or if they drop from fear. Someone can be fatally shot in the heart and keep going until the heart runs out of blood to pump. The human body is a lot tougher than some people think it is. I don't recommend getting shot even with a .22. I have, and it's not a lot of fun. Luckily, as a career police officer, I never had to find out which of the different calibers I carried was "the best."

BRAVO, couldn't say it better. Same experience I've had speaking with vets from from WW2 to Korea to Viet Nam. One shot one kill that's what the . 45 was made for plain and simple. Years ago I read a study done by our military re survival rates of wounded in WW2. Something I haven't been able to find since. It was thought that German losses were higher due to low supplies of morphine. But upon closer inspection the Germans had adequate levels of morphine and that due to our larger caliber weapons compared to their smaller calibers, the wounds inflicted upon them were of a more serious nature. Basically the , 50, 45, and 30 caliber vs the 9mm, and 7mm.

If I remember my high school physics from about 50 years ago I think we're talking about conservation of momentum here where momentum is mass times velocity. So the total momentum of the bullet and plate before the collision will be the same as the total momentum of bullet and plate after collision. Since the plate is initially at rest its momentum is zero so the total momentum before collision is just that of the bullet which is basically just its weight times velocity. Assuming the weight of the plate is much greater than the bullet weight the total momentum after collision will be approximately the momentum of the plate. So knowing the bullet velocity (in fps), bullet weight (in grains) and plate weight (in grains noting there are 7000 grains per pound) you can calculate the plate velocity (fps) immediately after collision as [bullet velocity x bullet weight]/ plate weight. Obviously the larger the plate velocity the more it will swing backwards i.e. more "knockdown power". Note that it doesn't matter if the bullet is deformed in the collision - total momentum is still conserved. A more accurate calculation would require us to know the velocity of the bullet after collision and if it actually bounces back. I would have to dig out my physics textbook from the basement but I think this is about right. So the bullet with the largest momentum (found by multiplying bullet weight and bullet velocity) should knock the plate hardest. Thanks!

Is Knock Down Power A Myth? A bullet no matter its size does one thing and one thing only. It punches holes. It does not push unless it hits bone or other hard object. Tissue is soft and it passes through. What is important is accuracy in hitting vital areas to "knock down" a threat or game. Larger slower bullets do cause severe trauma and if hitting bone causes devastating results while smaller faster bullets tumble or break apart also causing severe trauma but are more susceptible to deflection on hard objects such as bone. However if vital areas are not hit then the threat or game is not neutralized or knocked down. Two categories are usually given to bullet types in the military: anti-personnel rounds and anti-material rounds. One is designed for soft targets and one is designed for hard targets. Few calibers or rounds can do both effectively. Bottom line is there is no substitute for accuracy and good marksmanship regardless of the caliber or bullet size.

To me for money savings and practically the .357 was just as effective as the 45 , 10mm , or 44 mag. The .357 can shoot 38 specials or .357. Been used as a good backup gun for archers without too much weight on the hip.

Good old classic video. We all know knock down power is a myth. Stopping power not so much and certainly more energy is better, but you have to be able to hit with it. What demonstrates stopping power most in this video is his marksmanship.

Well all i can say is a month before my 14th Bday in 1977 i watched my father murdered in a hold up. .25 cal did him in. 5'7 strong as a bull. The bullet hit the main veina cava. I had an ambulance there in under 10 mins. He bled out and died at age 37! Shot placement is everything. Bottom line you dont want to get shot with anything!

@@robertscotti7970 Sorry for your loss. You're right. Stopping power equals marksmanship. I sometimes wonder if it there is an appreciable difference in a .22 and .45 acp. In either case it's more than likely going to be bloodless in a lethal area that stops someone.

The plate started really swinging with the 357 and the calibers after that. I'm kind of a 357 fanboy so there is that with my interpretation. But I was surprised by how relatively close the 38 and 9mm were. The 9 edging out the 38 a bit didn't surprise me. But what did, was how close they were.

As you say, not scientific, but I notice at my backyard shooting range 45 auto will pass through, and consistently knock down the planks of wood I use for a backstop. 38 spl, 357, and 9mm just go right on through.

Whenever i think of the term ,"knockdown power", i always picture those little wooden ornaments of a man that you pull the little string and the arms and legs raise up to the sides.

Knock down power is definitely a thing, although I don’t think it makes a big difference between common handgun carts.

Most surprised by the .38 Special. More swing than I was guessing.

There might be a technological device that can measure force of impact in foot pounds per square inch by taking in the incoming bullets on a target to accurately measure the knockdown power somewhere out there.

Scientific in that it shoes delivered energy when the projectile splats rather than a through and through. Kinda explain why 9mm requires double, triple, + taps. Don't y'all get your panties in a knot, I carry 9mm most of the time, realizing you will need more rounds on target is key. Hickock is aware.

That's a ballistic pendulum. It will give you a comparison of the different momentum of each caliber.

Knock down power is rather misleading as a term. One desires 'stopping power'. Stopping power is also misunderstood, as the point of 'stopping' is to stop the assailant from continuing the attack, not stopping movement or ability to walk. That factor does exist in large measure and is more or less demonstrated by the displayed 'plate rack'. The primary ingredient to 'stopping' is momentum, not 'muzzle energy'. Muzzle energy is based on the square muzzle velocity and mass, while momentum is based on mass and impact velocity. Light bullets tend to have more muzzle energy but loose velocity quicker than heavier bullet loads having lower muzzle velocity. Momentum tends not to be lost as much.

The was a fun video to watch! Not really a whole lot of difference once past the .22 or .38 cal rounds. The magnum rounds do punch harder, as they should. I’m a .357/45 guy so those two were my winners. 😅

Not a myth. A punch from a 200 lb man or a punch from a 200 lb Mike Tyson.

There are two "Handgun Stopping Power" books out there done years ago. I am not going to explain them here, you need to see them. They do give some insight into what they called "One Shot Stops". I will say that when the Federal 45 ACP Hydra-Shok 230 gr load came out it had a 100% rating for some time, from a 5 inch barrel. No one has been keeping these stats for over 20 years. Now we shoot into Jello. The idea behind the gel is that you shoot a known load into the gel and then compare damage done with a new design load. That way you dont have to wait until a bunch of people are shot with the new design.

You can tell the target's swinging When you hear that metal dinging. Caliber big or small And hollow point or ball, Pain to the target you'll be bringing.
