I disagree. It must cost a fortune to keep a correspondent in the US. Why not just give the gig to someone who is always there anyway.When that person (whoever he or she is) is back in England, doing whatever he (or she) does for GBN, perhaps Liz could fill in. Perhaps Jonathan could use his talents helping people who don't have a voice, the people of Margate spring to mind.

as a Massachusetts resident, my vote's impact on the national election is worth only slightly more than a foreigner's, I fear. A slimy crypto bro has dumped a ton of hypothetical money into challenging Elizabeth Warren in the Senate, but he came off as a greaseball dipshit at their recent debate, so I'm not too worried. I have plenty of issues with Warren, but she's still consistently one of the best members of the Senate, particularly on economic issues.

I am upset that Jonathan got no closer to America than the embassy in London! His reporting would have been entertaining (and possibly started a small civil war) ! Matt again precisely illustrates the utter absurdity of both the UK and US political systems - the US for the republicans being annoyed by a bunch of Islington cafe society workers invading their country ( and complaining that the streets are a bit too big to canvass) and the UK for having a party that appears to be falling over itself to wipe out its popularity! Excellent satire yet again Matt !

The thing that confuses me about this whole mess is people saying it could lead to a bad diplomatic relationship with Trump. Which just seems inevitable regardless (unless we are planning to abandon Ukraine and let him impose tariffs on all our goods with no response), so why worry about this?
@KatieGray12 ай бұрын
If you weren't worried about the Trump baby in a diaper balloon thing doing more damage than this, you don't know him as well as we do. If he's elected again, he won't care if some people from your country campaigned against him, he'll be trying too hard to punish those who voted against him in our country. He looks up to dictators who use their military and legal systems to crush dissent for a reason and his first priority will be to find a way to hold on to power for life by removing term limits and arresting opposition candidates.

As an American, I do have to ask that if it's not against the law in either country, do you object on some moral grounds? Because I think it could be argued that whether or not our country remains a democracy might have some impact on UK citizens individual interests. If one candidate had said during a speech that they would fix it so that voters would never have to vote again if they were elected in your country, I know I'd be concerned how that might affect my interests and might be interested in making sure voters in your country were aware of that.

I mean, for at least a year or so until the new bloc formed by China, North Korea, Russia et. al full devote themselves to tipping over the status quo. Gaza/Iran and Ukraine are proving to dictators that the various global organisations such as NATO and UN actually have very little in the way of bite. I do see China making moves on Taiwan, perhaps next. And North Korea just ruled South Korea a "foreign, hostile country". This is a HUGE development in relations which had already been tense for decades. This world is going down the pan. We fucked it.

Amongst young men who idolize him, yes. I also think there's a large swath of non-voters in my country whose vote can very easily be bought by his so-called contest. It's a sad reality that a lot of Americans don't think their votes matter, many simply because of the electoral college and how electoral boundaries are drawn up. Not to mention a whole host of other issues like historical inequalities and discrimination or intimidation mean a lot of people feel that it doesn't matter who is elected. These are the people who are more likely to vote for any candidate who is running a contest where they could win life-changing money, and while they can of course vote for anyone they want, it is definitely influential that the person giving away the money supports a particular candidate and the giveaways require accepting in-person at a political rally where the majority of those in attendance vote in favor of that candidate.
