I've honestly though about law school as a CS Major. Is a patent lawyer worth it?
@-Good4Y0u3 ай бұрын
@Zarsla my advice to most people is don't go to law school unless it's free or you absolutely 100% know you want to practice law. For a CS major it's not really a great opportunity, especially not compared to tech. I probably would put the effort into that. The comparable pay for an attorney is about the same or less than as a tech software engineer, but the hours are less. Big law attorneys make less than a staff engineer, and often a sr engineer, at a tech company. Which means (after factoring cost and hours worked) that tech for a CS major is a better bet. Plus patents can get a bit boring if you're not into it, so before doing anything I'd probably look into being a patent agent and learn what the process is about. That doesn't require going to law school.

The one thing I always wish someone would have said to me is "You don't have to be a trial lawyer." Because that's the impression TV gives, and while I considered it, I never thought I was fast enough on my feet in terms of speaking to actually be a trial lawyer, and so I was discouraged. There are whole branches of law where it's mostly just you and your paperwork, and you check over other people's paperwork and do research. It's just not as flashy as trial work to be put on television.

@jenniferhanses3 ай бұрын
@@melker617 I don't know about your country, but a lot of family law is pre-nups, post-nups, and wills, which all deal with long term financial planning. There's also real estate law, where you go and verify who owns a property to be sold and that all the paperwork meets the standards. I don't think either of those ever really go to trial. There's also bankruptcy law, which I'm more familiar with because I have heard it in trial (I am a legal transcriptionist), but I think that branch might also have research lawyers. I also have a friend who is a legal librarian (works at a big firm helping them do their research).

So I registered for a correspondence course through American Institute of Law and I am LOVING IT! This is the law school of the future for the 95% of lawyers who don't aspire to join a big law firm! No crushing debt means I can charge my future clients less and I don't have to take every case that walks through the door! The course content is clear and concise and there is no energy spent hurrying to classes or memorizing specific cases. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Here are 2 reasons why you should become a lawyer: 1) Nobody f**ks with lawyers! Most of the harassment I have endured in my life would NOT have happened if I was a lawyer, and 2) lawyers can right the wrongs of the world... I was an activist for decades -- never got a fraction accomplished of what I did after I started filing lawsuits!

Some states are looking at doing away with the bar altogether and instead having folks looking to be a lawyer do a mentorship under a lawyer in the field of law they're interested in. After a period of time (4 or 5 years?), their body of work is reviewed to determine whether they have satisfied the requirements needed to be certified as a lawyer in that field. In a way, this makes more sense than having to pass the bar since you are immersed in the field of law you want to specialize in. Michigan is one state that was considering this, and I think Washington? or maybe Oregon was another.

My late BFF had a younger brother that went to law school. He told me that he needed the carrot of becoming a lawyer to survive the stick of that first year. It was even more difficult for him since he came out of a liberal arts college. He mentioned that the engineers were appearing more relaxed. I explained how I as an engineering degree graduate was more regimented, formulaic, and systematic, in how to approach problems. I walked him through how our minds approach problems, learning, and memorizing completely different than how he had been trained. He was a pretty smart guy, so with those adjustments in mind, he updated me that it was definitely easier after our talk. He went on to graduate, pass the bar, and work on the corporate side. He banked; but he wanted out. He became a high school teacher, kept advancing, and eventually became a principal of that high school. He doesn't practice law for clients anymore; but the knowledge, skills, and experience in that industry definitely helped him in his later career. For me...I couldn't see myself as a lawyer, so I avoided that first year stress and expense. 😂

I hear from attorneys all the time don't go to law school. I had one Attorney say to me y do you want to go to law school? I told him because I want to help those who cannot afford attorneys and help those with mental illness get treatment not prison. He said don't go just because your only option is that n that my reason is valid

Been practicing law for over 20 years. I am not even a lawyer! Never went to law school. I do both criminal and civil! Won over 90% of my cases! How did I do this?

Lying.

Wrong answer! Keep guessing! Hint, in 20 years I have had estimate 20 cases! So I only average 1 case a year. Figure it out yet?

Why is law school 3 years now instead of 2? Is there more law to learn or have they stretched out a 2 year program over 3 years to make it easier on students. They stopped having 3 hour lectures in medical school because the students couldn’t concentrate for that long. Is it the same for law students?

Law school is soo expensive! It is extremely hard to work full time and go to school full time and most people that say they did it are lying

Surprised you could get any major though. I got a B.S. so I’ll start devoting my life towards helping the big stay at the top and the little guys sell out!
