I ran as an O/O for Schneider back in '98-2000. Did better here than I did as O/O at Swift. I started back in '94, as a company driver for Swift, then Jerry Moyes started their O/O program there and I lease/purchased an FLD starting in '95. Paid truck off in full in 3 years and came here. This next week I'll be starting back with Schneider as a returning driver because I've been out of it since 2004. I know Swifts lease is half the cost per week that SFI is, but they don't have a load board fully up and running yet, and they pay less. I figure ill just grit my teeth for 6 months as a company driver and lease a new truck from SFI because I remember all the stuff Schneider had to help me fix last time with my aging truck(brought over here).I have money saved,800+ credit score, no debts of any king...(2 storage units, internet bill, car insurance=500$ a month...no car payments, no kids, no mortgage, no school loans. I'm gonna live in the truck full time (I'm single) and just see friends around the country..and bank every dime I don't need for personal expenses like food/phone/etc. I'm willing to bet I could BANK 150-200k in 4 years..A lot of stuff you talk about as far as running your own I already know...so I'll look for you. I live up in pacific Northwest but I plan to run lower '48...6 weeks running minimum. And time off will be here and there wherever. I don't have enough to do to take a week off. Goal is to save 500k in 8-10 years and then buy land/build barn dominium in TN somewhere and have no mortgage. I have a fifth of that saved already so, its gonna be a busy decade. Barndominium lets me write off shop half of house for use working on my own truck.

That’s a lot of good info for people. The number one sign of a person who’s gonna fail a lease is the “ I wanna lease so I can be home more”. Not understanding that your first loads pay the truck the next load pay your fuel and then finally the last loads pay you. Not being able to understand that any home time or down time automatically starts digging a hole. That doesn’t mean you can’t go home, but every thing has to be calculated. If you want more home time buy from a dealership. If you can grind hard and keep moving, then a lease can work.

Depends on how much you want to work or stay at home. By buying a used truck you are buying someone else problems, possibly. You never know how the truck was treated. New trucks have a warranty and that is the main thing.

I've done lease purchase through Schenider National before and I loved it. I had a slightly used truck through SFI paying $1,000 a week. The only thing I would do different is get a used truck with around 500,000. No risk no reward.

Leasing is a huge expense and a huge gamble; it’s geared toward people with no money and low credit to help them get in the game of O/O. But you can come up over time. Definitely you need to have good business sense and good money management. The goal should be to get out of the truck payment because with a lease purchase your paying about 50% more for what the truck is actually worth so paying the truck down saves you on that 50%.
@LifeOfKO Жыл бұрын
Most definitely. I agree with you. I learned that. Got me money saved up. Got my credit right and now it’s time to buy.

@@LifeOfKO I spoke with a few mechanics about buying a used truck. They all said that most Diesel engines will start to have big ticket maintenance problems around 500k miles so look for a 2022 around 250k-300k miles. They also said that idling the engines causes the DEF system to get dirty so try not to idle for long periods and if possible get a Cummings or a Detroit engine. My friend bought a used truck at 300k miles a Detroit and got 1,300,000 miles before he got a huge maintenance bill so he basically salvaged it for parts.

All good points but if someone is considering a $60k-ish used truck, they have to understand, and more importantly, be ready for any expensive breakdowns that might happen. It’s always a crapshoot. They may get lucky and never have anything major hit them. On the flip-side, however, one major $10k or more breakdown is a very real possibility that could literally put someone out of business instantly if they don’t have the financial reserves in place. I would never even think of buying a used truck without at least $20k (preferably more) in reserves, but that’s just me. As far as the cost to own a leased truck, I personally don’t ever want to own it. I love my truck and all but at the end of the day it’s a piece of required equipment to do my job, and it depreciates. It also can cost a fortune once the warranty expires. I’d rather pay a fixed cost for it’s use while it’s under warranty and then replace it with another leased truck at the end of its term. Just a different perspective and approach to business, I guess.
@LifeOfKO Жыл бұрын
Whatever floats your boat. To do lease after lease is just a waste of money. You paying off a truck just to give it back that’s kinda pointless. You buy a 60k truck or a 250k truck either or can break down. Just because you buy a used truck doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a warranty. A lot of companies offered extended warranty that cover 3 years 300k more miles. So either way it goes you take a risk. These new trucks break down more than old trucks. I’ve seen it first hand. Yes they warranty covers it but the warranty not going to cover your tow bill or your hotel cost if you stuck out of town. Plus with parts on back order these days you could be waiting weeks to get something simple fixed which could cost you your business if you ain’t making no money. So it’s a gamble however you do it. You just have to take risk and hope for the best. Save up money for the rainy days and go for it.
@DirkTrucks Жыл бұрын
@@LifeOfKO You’re not wrong and I’m not disagreeing with you. I guess the most important thing, no matter what exact path you decide is best for you, is that having reserve funds saved for the unexpected costs that can hit you is super important. Just like there are many different ways to work as a driver, there are many ways to acquire and pay for the truck you want to drive as an independent. The question of what’s best is always an individual decision. Whatever path you decide is best for you and your circumstances, you are absolutely right in that they all involve some risk. Going into it with solid cash reserves is far smarter than just crossing your fingers and that’s really my main point. Like you said, warranties don’t cover all of the costs incurred when a truck breaks down. You have to plan ahead for those possibilities.
