I lived in Kaneohe as a kid and my wife was born in Honolulu. Lived on the mainland for 36 years. Moved back to the Islands 2 years ago. We chose Kailua-Kona. Kona has everything without being too big. Airport, Costco, restaurants, beaches, fishing, etc. Chose to be on the leeward side because we like the drier climate. Hilo side is too wet for us, although that's the greener side with the waterfalls. We can always drive to the Hilo side to get our waterfall fix. The B.I. has more climate zones on its 4000+ square miles than probably any other place on earth, everything from desert to snow. We used to vote weekly on whether or not we made the right decision to move here. We've stopped voting. If anybody wants variety, they should consider the island of Hawaii. Kailua-Kona was good enough for King Kamehameha I, and it's good enough for us.

@Peter Kay Living in Hawaii I forgot to mention the diving! Vog was terrible once Fissure 8 opened up. Some people with respiratory problems actually moved off-island. As soon as Halema'uma'u finished draining then the hurricanes passed through in August, we've had nothing but great skies. Literally no vog. Some say it hasn't been this nice in Kailua-Kona since the 80's.

PSB Nighthawk we are also thinking of moving to the big island in a couple of years. Thinking of Waikoloa or Kailua-Kona areas as Hilo is too wet. That said it’s much cheaper there.

The most important thing when going to Hawaii is to chill out ! There is a lot of hype surrounding Hawaii , I have been there several times and love the place , still , expectations run high , I find myself wanting the islands to perform for me , and my first day or two there are kinda edgy and I think , what’s the big deal , but that’s not what Hawaii is about , after a few days , the islands gently permeate my existence , and I realize , wow , I am back in Hawaii and it feels really cool. There is no other state like it in the United States. My advice , don’t go there expecting anything , don’t expect the islands to perform for you. Don’t complain when you see a Walmart , an expressway , when the waves are not as big as you thought or the first Mai Tai is not as good as you thought it should be. Just chill. Let the islands find their way into you. Before you know it , you will be home , back at that day job, feeling like you just woke up from a great dream. Thinking , oh my god , I have to go back ! And you will. PS I love all the islands , been to almost all of them ,could not decide which is best. Winks Lisa

Ai Kinward,as a local on Oahu for my whole life, Those islands are inaccessible to most people. Kahoolawe was actually a nuclear bomb test site back in WW2 and Niihau is owned privately by the Robinson Family. Sorry to say but you can't go to those islands like "I'm gonna take a vacation on a privately owned island!" or "Lemme just chill on this radioactive island!" No. Only a dumb bitch would assume that. You can go to Lanai which is next to Maui. But no, a lot of people haven't been to Niihau and Kahoolawe. Also, it is clear you haven't learned/been to the Hawaiian islands at all my friend.

I was born and raised in Hawaii. I've got mixed feelings about it. Growing up being bullied for being Hapa really messed up my mental state, but I guess being picked on, beat up, and treated like garbage from 5 years old until I turned 16 will do that. I miss a lot about home. But I'm still trying to fix the issues I have as a result of my childhood, and even a lot of my adult life. If you hold eye contact with somebody for more than 2 seconds their egos are hurt and think it is a challenge for a fight. My advice for people who want to move to Hawaii is this: Be very VERY wealthy, live where the locals are minimal. Or at least where the locals who exist are somewhat well to do. You'll get less harassment that way. And do not make eye contact with random locals (male or female) that you don't know. I can't really convey through KZbin how it was, people are always shocked when I tell them what it was like.

@@livehawaii yeah, it is a hard thing to deal with. My family is still there and they seem offended and sad that I told them I'd never move back. They ask why and I tell them that I would never put my kids through that. Especially my son who is severely autistic. I've never experienced bullying, or flat out hate towards people as bad as I've experienced back home. There is no justice for it either. My family never had to deal with it, mom is very dark skinned (black almost) and never had issues being a Pacific islander. My dad is white but nobody ever messed with him because he's a giant. My brother is also a giant, and looks like a samoan or large Pacific islander. My sister is also big boned and looks like a local and dark skinned like my brother. Me... 5 feet 7 inches tall, very tiny body and skinny. I have a "friendly" face and timid. Also, the whitest of the group. From kindergarten to sophomore year in high school was me getting messed with. I tried to fight back against a bully and got smashed. Guy was 6 feet 2 and felt like he just needed to beat me up. He wasn't the only one. It stopped when I was a junior in high school because I got a little bigger, and I guess people got bored with it. I felt weak and hopeless. When I moved to Oahu from Big Island it I found that people where still assholes. Same mentality of "eyeing you up" and them getting an ego boost when your look away. Just pumping gas and minding my own business and you got people just staring you, waiting to get a response so they can puff up their chest and say shit like "Ho, fakkah, you eyeing me up? Fakkah like scrap hah?" Yet Hawaii is my home. I don't know any other place as my home and it sucks. But that's my reality. I never really let my family know how it has messed me up. I'm 37 now and I still deal with issues. I live in the mainland now, and have never been treated better for the most part. Aside from being called "black boy" by two different white people, which I just laughed at because in Hawaii I'm not fucking dark enough, and here some inbred jed backwoods racist think I'm not white enough. Pretty funny. Jeez... sorry... I just vented my life on your thread. Anyway, your video randomly came up on my feed, and all my shit came out. I do enjoy watching the scenery in your videos. Not all my time there was awful, just most of it, and I have some great memories of me being there with my close friends. I just can't recommend ever to move there. God bless.

I know exactly how you felt! I moved to Wahiwa on Oahu because my dad was in the military. I was 11 years old and so excited to be there at first. We lived there 7 years and they were the worst years of my life! I was bullied constantly, and feared for my life! The only reason being I was a haloe. The principal would keep me in his office at school to keep me safer sometimes! I lived there in the middle sixties to early seventies. I too have had mental issues because of all the abuse I suffered! It would be hard for others to believe how horrible some of the things I went through like kill Haloe Day on the last day of school each year! My parents picked me up from school on that day each year! I was a young girl but the local girls had gangs in school and I had to keep my head down and not look at at these locals or they would start harassing me. It was two years after coming back to the mainland before I could look up at people again.I was psychologically scarred!

I have to agree with you, Oahu is the best choice to consider in living out of those 4 major islands. Though I frequently visited Maui say more than 20 times, I still think Oahu has more to offer all around. Miliani almost in the center of the island is my pick to move to, it's got good school district for children to have decent education, short drive to outlet mall, Peril Harbor and beautiful Ko Olina. I'll move my family to Oahu one day when financially sound.

I love your videos - as a videographer/editor myself I'm curious about how you film these, and capture such clean audio even with the wind while driving. Impressive! I've visited Hawaii many times, each time felt like coming home - and I would be crying when I left. I have finally found a viable housing solution that will enable me to move to Oahu and I couldn't be more ecstatic. Now I just need to find a job.... As you mentioned in a previous video, I cannot wait to leave the Western value system behind, especially the "me first" attitude that is so prevalent here on the East Coast. I cannot wait to get rid of the majority of my possessions and live a simple life enjoying the beach, the mountains, and the company of others. I cannot wait to build an extended family and define myself by something other than work. This is my big chance to align my life to my values. Thank you for the resources in your videos and your website, it's a real service to those of us making the move.

Lived on both Oahu and Maui. Moved to Oahu (Waikiki) in 1986 and stayed 4 years until a job transfer took us to Maui. I was upset at first but after about 6 months I embraced it. When I was on Oahu I was single, young and partying. “The Wave” was my favorite and of course, Mooses for Long Island iced tea! My first keiki (child) was born 1 month after moving to Maui. It worked out for the best. Pace is much slower here and easy to raise a family. Most of my friends on Oahu sent their keiki to private schools. We looked at Seabury Hall, waaay too much $$$. Both of my children went 12 years public and went on to very good colleges on the mainland. Now when I visit Oahu, it’s overwhelming!! I do love the restaurants and shopping. I heard they closed Mekongs Thai on Beretania.... bumma! .....haven’t been to Kauai since 1982. The big island is pretty cool and Lanai....used to go over on the ferry for lunch at The Lodge but haven’t been there since Larry Ellison bought it. Some really good people from there. I moved to Kauai 18 years ago from Westchester County, about an hour’s drive north of NYC. As far as cost of living, housing - it was not that different. I had visited the 4 main islands on vacation so was familiar with them all. Since I grew up in the Air Force and my favorite 2 places were San Antonio and the Canal Zone , Panama, when I decided I needed a change from the cold winters of NY, Hawaii was a no-brainer. I have a son in NY and what I always called my “hippie son” on Kauai. He encouraged me to choose Kauai so I would have family if needed. I didn’t think it out much beyond that but I definitely lucked out in my choice of island. I was already 59 but found work immediately as a babysitter for a service that went mostly to hotels. After that, I got a job at Borders and worked for them until they closed. But in the meantime, I got a part-time, then full-time job as a librarian at Kauai Community College. All this to say that I successfully and luckily overcame the cost-drawbacks of Kauai. I love the laid-back life on Kauai, the beauty, the friendliness of the people, less crowds and traffic than Oahu, less need to dress up than NY. The worst thing for me is that my other son and his family are a 10+ hour plane ride to visit. But every time I visit, I know I can’t move back. This is home now.

Peter Kay is right about Kona being a small town (and far from everywhere), but we do have good shopping...Macy's, Pier 1, Safeway, Costco, Ross, Target, Wal Mart (a K-mart just closed). We also have several climate zones in the vicinity - up Hualalai at 3,500 feet you may need a fireplace, and the Kona coffee district is comfortably cool and wetter than in town. North of town is dry almost all year. I love these videos of Oahu. Oahu and Kauai are the most beautiful islands for jagged mountains and sandy beaches! The Big Island has diversity and you can travel for hours in some places without seeing another human being.

Thank you 🙏 If you’re from NorCal....So far I feel like the Hawaiian islands are similar to Cali...Kauai is like Marin County or Napa (yuppie hippie), Oahu is like L.A. (trendy, busy, freeways, traffic), Maui is more like Berkeley meets Marin County (some low key city or social life but more beach suburban, maybe like San Diego), main island I’ve never been to but I’d guess more like Contra Costa County with some Berkeley.

I live in Kona on the BI (Big Island of Hawaii). We chose this island for a couple of reasons. (1) It's the least expensive island on which to buy a home. For what we paid for our house here in Kona, that may have given us a small 2 bedroom/1 bath condo in Honolulu. We have a 3 bed/2 bath house on a 15,225 sf lot with our own swimming pool and a small orchard of tropical fruit. We could never afford that in Honolulu! (2) We moved here from San Francisco so we NEEDED to get away from the congestion/traffic jams/crime/HIGH PRICES/etc. which we had. Kona has had a Costco since 1993 - Hilo still does not have one and they must drive across the island to shop here at our Costco, which currently is the only Costco on the island. We have a large Target/Walmart/Home Depot/Lowes/Safeway/KTA etc. right in town that attracts people from all over the island. We have a great hospital (Kona Community), though admittedly not in the same league as Oahu. But it's only a 40 minute plane ride and if you're insured by Kaiser, they pickup the airfare to the Kaiser in Honolulu, plus they pick you up at the airport. And if you'll need someone with you, they will pickup the ticket for that person, too. Plus....if you'll be hospitalized for some time, they will put you up in a hotel close to the hospital. In San Francisco, it sometimes took me almost an hour to get to the hospital due to congestion. We have awesome hiking here on the BI, too. Hike down into the Waipio Valley or into the Pololu Valley for an awesome journey. Plus we have two almost 14,000 foot high mountains to climb if you can and then you may be able to go snow-boarding or skiing at the summit during the winter months and early spring. Only on Maui could that even be a possibility and not very often. I love living here in Kona and letting my friends and family see the island as I do. When we've gone to Honolulu and return to Kona, I practically kiss the tarmac when I deplane at KOA, I'm just so happy to be back home. I'm partially retired (I sell real estate here along the Gold Coast) and only went back to work to meet more people and expand my circle of friends because I wanted to. Living here in Kona is affordable in comparison to San Francisco. I just wish I had made the move decades ago!

Expensive AF. Most people I know start talking about moving somewhere that land is cheap once they have more than one kid. Keep in mind these people are making about $90k and probably have a spouse that works and makes near as much too. Texas and Arizona are states that enter the conversation. Housing is by far the largest and most difficult to lower expense. Between the cost of a 2 or three bedroom and a $1000 Costco grocery bill monthly (for two) you had better have a good job and really get your enjoyment out of the beach and life in Hawaii.

I lived on Oahu in the mid 1950's and again from 1959 to 1961 while my dad was in the Navy. Came back to visit many times between then and 2019. My wife and I have been to all of the five main islands. In 2016 we purchased a condo on Molokai. We still lived in Utah until buying a house on Molokai in 2019. While there are no Costco's, WalMart's, Target stores, Home Depot's and Lowes stores on Molokai, this wonderful island is perfect for my wife and I. I'll be seventy-three this month (March 2021). I have absolutely no desire to move back to the Mainland, and I've been to all fifty states and have lived from Maine to Florida and New York to California. Plus Hawaii, of course! The best thing about Hawaii, and, in my opinion this applies to all of the five major islands, are the people of Hawaii. The Aloha Spirit is alive and well here. Even in downtown, rush-hour traffic in the Waikiki Beach area of Oahu.

Peter, you mention Oʻahu being cosmopolitan. I lived there in the 50ʻs when as a teen Iʻd walk around Waikiki in a bathing suit but put on dress and heels to go downtown Honolulu. That gave way to less formal attire about the same time it changed everywhere. I lived in the Waikiki jungle as a teen but moved to Kaneʻohe later to raise a family. And I was lucky, my job kept me traveling around the islands so I spent time in them all. My home: I could see and smell the bay, the ginger, plumeria, pikaki of my garden, taste the fresh papaya and lilikoi off my tree and vine; and enjoy the pricey coke and chips with the savings on shoes! And look up from my morning coffee to see those majestic mountains looming over my back yard. As the song goes, "donʻt know why I left it and I never will". Thanks for the drive down memory lane.

I was stationed on Oahu at Schofield Bks. for 3.5 years - and I've been back to Hawaii 7 times on vacation. When we retire, we plan to spend at least 3 to 5 months per year on the Big Island (Winter, of course) and the spring/summer/fall months on the mainland. There are lots of timeshares and rental properties to be had in Hawaii, so we don't need to commit to full-time in Hawaii, just the main winter months.

I have never been but it’s been pulling on me really strong for some time now and that’s my wife’s dream to be living there. I grew up in California, moved to Tennessee for 5 years in my early teens, back to Cali for about 10 years and now we’re in Spokane, wa for the past 10 years. It feels like we live on an island here with not much to do. We’ve came to despise it due to the horrible long winters. We want to go back home but we’re never fully satisfied there either. I’ve been in construction for about 20 years and mostly plumbing, but I know all other aspects of construction as well so god willing I can find a decent job to sustain my family and I. We don’t need much other than a place over our head and a peaceful, healthy and happy life and we truly feel like Hawaii could be the place that will give us the at home feeling. 🙏🏼

Secret drive, eh? 😜 If you’re familiarized w/the mountains, you can see 👀 twin peaks! Mountains on the left, he’s heading north. So I’d say... the old road! 👍👏🏻 Auloa Rd. Is cool, too.

This is helpful. We've lived on Maui and traveled to every island. Right now it's rather concerning that there is a housing shortage.

At 6:44, number 2, Pick the Island that's closest to where you're living now. I had to chuckle a little on that one. Not that it's wrong or bad advice, it's not; but I live in Texas. I used to live in Hawai'i, on the Island of O'ahu. I admit, I miss it very much. But we have to go where our job takes us. We have also been to the Big Island. But O'ahu is home, and like Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, There's no place like home. Aloha au 'ia Hawai'i. Thumbs up to the video.

if this place is for you, and it sounds like it is for you, it's one thing you can never forget. No matter where you live, you will never forget this place.

Hi Peter, Aloha and thanks for the great videos! I'm considering moving to Oahu/Waikiki and driving Lyft/Uber for a living. I'm from Seattle WA. and drive Lyft now and enjoy it very much. I would like to give it a try for a few years (2 - 3) in Waikiki and see what happens, if it fails I can always move back to Seattle. I would plan on renting a studio/one bedroom one bath with parking for my Lyft vehicle. Please let me know your thoughts. I'll be vacationing in Kauai next week if you would like to meet up. Otherwise I would love to meet you in Waikiki later in the year and discuss apartment shopping. I've been looking online and found several affordable candidates already. I'm planning on 2019-ish for the move. Downsizing everything here in Seattle is going to take some time for sure. Thanks much --TW

Thank you for the ride! For me and my husband, the Kona area would fit us. We've been to all of the islands and the Big Island fits our style.

For me, the fast driving ruins the serenity that the islands offer. Makes me nauseated to watch, too.

Yeah anyone can be lazy and drive around and make a video. I would love to see someone make a video on foot hiking and to take in wilderness area taking pictures of all that beautiful tropical scenery. If I lived in Hawaii I would be exploring all the back roads and wilderness areas

a shore break that is exciting . It's how much money you have. If you have wheelbarrows full of money, then you can afford Oahu and be stuck in traffic, high real estate prices and cost of living I've been here for 50 years, lived on Oahu and moved away to the Big Island and never looked back. Oahu 650,000 people 695 square miles, Big Island, 190,000 people 4000 square miles.

Aloha Paul. I saw your other comment and deleted it because you posted your phone number. My first recommendation is that you go to my website, subscribe to the newsletter, and go through the content starting with the editors picks. I send it neutered newsletters each week that you can easily reply to. That's a start
