I was born in downtown LA many years ago. Parents moved to the San Fernando Valley. Would occasionally go downtown in the 60s and 70s. Never saw any homeless except for a few people hanging out on Skid Row. No tents. Sad to see how bad it has gotten. Let CA in 84 and never been back.

@@finaloption... America is exactly like many Western European countries where refugee agencies and other social programs geared for toward them administer social housing. It's like this in both America and other Western countries for corporations have a powerful voice using political lobbies for beneficial policies such as bringing in low cost immigrant labor. The social housing and other affordable options for regular US citizens is way too inadequate for there's simply not enough to go around so we have a big housing crunch. Years ago in the 80's and earlier, there was more than enough to go around to house all of our citizens and rents and house prices were very reasonable setting a very patriotic vibe to the nation among most of the people. It is to destroy America and the West while the wealthiest grab everything for wealth and ownership control is power. This sort of agenda has happened all around the world in previous eras of history resulting in wars, famine, and failed countries. It's greed having no upper limit.

You’re absolutely correct on how homelessness can happen to anyone. Around 5 years ago I went through a terrible divorce and to find out in court that my x had maxed out 10 credit cards. I have to pay her alimony for another 6 years so as the judge put it so she can maintain her life as she was during the marriage. I work to put away a little for my kids, and the rest goes to her and obviously bills. LA has let this problem get far to out of hand because there’s no checks and balances against these people in power. The homeless guy that you interviewed said he lives a life of complete freedom, doing everything that he desires. Maybe that's why he is where he is? I sat behind a computer for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, in a grey crappy office, stuck in a high pressure job for 30 years! It totally sucked but I knew if I didn't stick with it, I would be on the street! That job almost killed me but no one came by to give me any pity for my suffering. Tell me, why should I feel sorry for the street people that did all they wanted to do and didn't conform to "normal" rules that most of us follow? Sure, those with mental disabilities, or those that need a hand up to get back on track, we must take care of such individuals. But, able bodied lazy people, I have no pity. The Bible says "don't work, don't eat". The sad part is we must work hard and save while we are young and employable, once we are past 50 life gets hard... those on the street past 50 are practically in a hopeless situation. Kids must be taught in school that there are ways to not end up living on the street.

I just retired last year like you but I kind of enjoyed my last job of 30 years. Sure it was hard at times but living below your means and saving your whole life will eventually pay off for the majority of people. It seems the Government is intentionally conditioning people to remain forever dependent on them. I always say, compassion doesn't require one to be stupid but there's plenty proving me wrong everyday. I think of the people who lived during the depression that were probably a lot worse off and yet willing to work in labor camps building public works under FDR. Social housing is a starting point for many in extremes rich countries. Not everyone has the support of balanced family households, not everyone is well educated, ... the list goes on. First off, the reason you have so many homeless in California is because you have a nice climate. So people are flocking there from other states. My guess is that probably half of these homeless are able bodied. Farmers across America cannot get reliable labourers at wages they can afford to pay. Why can’t the government set up a program to transport these able bodied workers to these farm jobs?
