UPDATE: after this interview, I reached out to LAHSA. I just learned LAHSA was able to help them today. Adrien and Rodger are no longer living in a tent!
The one thing that messes me up more than anything is when I see homeless children. I worked as a family outreach case manager for four years at a Los Angeles Winter Shelter. It was probably the most rewarding and most heartbreaking job I have ever had.
This morning I was on a call with an executive from one of my favorite homeless services. Because of the affordable housing crisis and the coronavirus pandemic's influence on the economy, she was telling me about the increase in families with children living in tents.
I was handing out socks at Echo Park Lake talking to a couple who I met five years ago in their tent downtown. They both looked great. The last time I saw them, they were suffering from addiction. The woman is now in housing, and because some housing does not allow couples, her partner of all these years stays in a tent. They recognized me. It was really awesome seeing them sober and healthy.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man cooking on a camping stove in front of his tent. The man was kneeling partly sticking out of the tent talking to a young boy standing looking at the food. My guess it was dinner time. I don't like to interrupt people, but I had to go ask if they were homeless living in that tent. I mean, it was rather obvious, but I don't often see kids outside in homeless encampments, so I walked over and asked them if they needed socks just to start a conversation.
Adrien has been living with his son Rodger in a tent near Downtown Los Angeles for five days. Adrien speaks with broken English, and Rodger did help translate a little, but some of my understanding came from our conversations after this interview.
Adrien and Rodger were sharing a four-bedroom house with other people. One of them was Rodger's babysitter. I am not 100% sure, but it looks like Rodger has special needs. The father and son lived in a bedroom together. That living relationship lasted for seven years. I don't speak Spanish, so I am not completely clear on this next part, but drama happened, forcing Adrien and Rodger outside with no place to live.
When I asked Adrien if any homeless services were helping him, he didn't understand my question. Adrien started referring to the Echo Park Lake homeless community. It is awesome they are in a homeless encampment that has formed into a community, but no one and especially no child should be sleeping outside homeless.
One of Adrien's wishes was for more cans of cooking gas. After the interview, I opened my wallet and gave them some money. I started to walk away when Rodger came running saying "hey Mr. you just gave my dad one of his wishes." I didn't really understand what Rodger was referring to, so I asked. Rodger said, "my Dad wishes for cooking gas and now he can buy it."
I have already been in content with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, who said they will go find Adrien and Rodger tomorrow to offer services. I know from experience, that homeless services will do what they can to get children off the streets. The scary part is, with 30 million households at risk of being evicted, we are going to see many more children living in tents, which is where you come in.

UPDATE 12/19: I found Roger and Adrian at my local supermarket. Found out he’s getting help and doing well at the moment living in a Hotel. Rogers school has given them gift cards for food and clothes, and has also received help from a church that even gave them a car to get around. Roger and Adrian are very thankful for all the help and support they have received. Adrian also mentioned Roger was also a little sad that they weren’t able to take the pup seen in the video. Both Roger and Adrian are in good spirits and continue to be strong and hopeful for the future.

That's great news! I'm kind of conflicted though because I don't know how good this is to show Roger and his dad to the entire world including his classmates and entire school living in a tent with no money. It's easy to imagine that it doesn't have only positive effects on the boy knowing that everyone knows that he and his dad were homeless. It's sad that this kind of exposure is what it took for people who're better off, to react and get them Off of the streets.

So, life can take a turn unexpectedly and yes, it can happen to anyone. The father here taught his son what most people will never have or attain: happiness without material possessions, joy, peace, positive spirit, hope! I will take living in a tent for awhile if I could’ve been taught these values at a young age.

Nah bro. Don't act like the people are the problem when generations of minorities were the ones blamed for the city ills and high cost of living when they've been working here building L.A, long Beach, and your backyard. Stop listening to the media and realize the problem come from the city council saying that no we can't afford to house and give basic human rights to the people but that new development that the people are not benefiting from can get a couple of millions. Hell they even get yo tax dollars to do so. Regardless of the result the state and city are responsible for the outcome of the ills since they balled so hard for that position and power to do something. Fuck them not taking responsibility and creating racial segregation with the game of thrones bs they have in order to get paid more.

That's totally a good point but the issue is that most people who are poor can't just pick up their things and move. Moving out of state costs thousands of dollars and most people in these bad financial situations usually have tens of thousands in debt making it harder for them to move. Also there aren't many jobs for unskilled workers that would help facilitate a move so you need to move someone and find a job after you move so you need a few months of salary saved. Hopefully there will be some easier ways help these people relocate.

You act like internet is natural. You people are so far off from reality your perception of what is “normal” has been changed from the evolution of the world. I don’t get why living in a tent would make you sad. What should make you sad is that humans are parasites destroying the world

@@HaVoC_TX I honestly can't tell if you're trolling because living in a tent homeless is a hard way to live, there is a reason why most homeless people aren't sober. what in our society is actually "natural" besides our dumb ape brains that aren't adapted to our rapidly changing world. it's just the way our education system works now and it's unfortunate that kids without access to internet are behind kids that do to no fault of their own. Its not like we live in the 1800s, this is the way the world works now and yeah people are a plague on the planet but instead of wishing for all of us to be dead you could wish every kid gets an education and some of them make such a difference we correct our many mistakes as a species

Schools are giving out (T-Mobile Hotspot devices) its a small box that fits in your pocket and you could get wifi anywhere they are also giving IPads and computers for people that don’t have any. It just must suck if they ask him to have his camera on since he’s not inside a actual house but a tent

I was also homeless as a young kid and I can tell you as long as the kid is receiving much love and attention then NOTHING not even being homeless can make a child upset. If they have a nurturing parent they will turn out very independent and strong.

Of course a kid could get upset by being homeless. A loving and nurturing parent will make sure that the kid doesn't have a traumatic experience, but in the moment, a kid can get upset if some other kid bullies him for being homeless, or if he's hungry or cold or wet.

@@callumc833 companies have made profits and spend that money as soon as they get it, they should save up for a rainey day as well. If companies aren't willing to pay living wages and share the profits of the companies with the workers who make them so profitable, then they dont deserve as much help. How many companies such as Amazon, Walmart or McDonald's make billions in profit but many if not most of their employees require government assistance. Companies should pay fair wages, not the bare minimum. Corporate Welfare is more expensive than 'regular' warefare and its money given to companies that make billions. They pocket the profits and leave their workers in the dirt

The dad is present. He was simply trying to mentally translate what the interviewer was saying from English to Spanish. It takes a spanish native speaker a while to mentally translate. The son can quickly translate because his bilingual brain fully developed like that. Anyhow, the kid took me back to my own upbringing and the responsibilities that were placed on me as a kid. That kid is growing up fast without even knowing he is. Translating for parents as a kid requires a child to grow up very quickly. And, being Latino only intensifies that responsibility even more. Which is why that kid unconsciously uses humor, silliness and laughter to cope with the situation. He doesn't know it yet. I pray he continues to be a light within this dark dark world.
