Louise is now better remembered, but Colleen had the edge as an actress. Her large dollhouse is still on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. By the way, the apartment buildings in Chicago where she lived with her aunt and uncle are still rental apartments today and well preserved. I lived a few blocks from one of them in the 90s and my great-uncle lived in the same neighborhood in 1924.

Colleen was more of her time than Brooks was which is why Brooks has a bigger current year fanbase, but Moore was the far greater star.

The irony is that Colleen, not Louise, was the epitome of the independent woman that feminists tout so much. However, today Louise is the most admired and remembered just for being sexually liberated and open. Also, Colleen had a much more successful career in movies (rivaling that of Clara Bow no less) and made a successful transition to the business world after her retirement. But for the newer generations, her accomplishments seem to mean nothing.

Colleen! I love both, studied both, own books by both and I choose Colleen. She was the darling of her time and top box office draw in the mid-to-late-twenties. She suffered the loss of many of her films because they were destroyed through neglect at MOMA. This is why she is less known today. She was lovely, playful, gorgeous, and her bob was copied by many. She was the original flapper.

As much as I like Louise, she really wasn't a star, an up and coming one perhaps, but she never came close to achieving Colleen's level of success and popularity (or Clara's for that matter). That being said, she did make some very enjoyable films before she went to Europe. She is too cute as the literal girl next door in THE SHOW OFF, a supporting role to be sure, and IT'S THE OLD ARMY GAME. She reached her peak in the US in THE BEGGARS OF LIFE with co-stars Richard Arlen and Wallace Beery, a film with some surprising risque content for 1928 in which she disguises herself as a male hobo to escape being wrongfully accused of murdering a guardian who was attempting to sexually abuse her- only to find herself as a potential target yet again once her cover is blown in the hobo community. Film is available on DVD and is highly recommended. THE SHOW OFF is also worth a view as well. I agree with your assessment of Colleen Moore. If I could magically go back to the 1920s and have my choice of Colleen, Clara, or Louise to settle down with or just to hang out with, I'd likely choose Colleen in a heartbeat. I really haven't seen many of her films, due to the fact that they are lost. I finally did get to see ELLA CINDERS and was disappointed in the film (nothing to do with Colleen). I would love to see LILAC TIME, but haven't been able to find it. In terms of Clara Bow, her must see movies are MANTRAP, IT, CALL HER SAVAGE, HOOPLA, and HULA. She just literally lit up the screen with her boundless energy and charisma. All three of them were stunningly beautiful women.

If Kenneth Tynan had not besottedly written about Louise in the Seventies, she might not be so (cultishly) revered today. If MOMA had not through neglect destroyed so many of Colleen Moore's films, she would be better known today. Colleen was the icon who influenced the style of Louise and others. I have read autobiographies of both stars and biographies of both. Louise was seductive but cold. Colleen was charismatic and warm. One was self-destructive. The other was savvy.

It wasn't really about Douglas Fairbanks' looks so much as it was about his sparkling personality and fearless approach to stunts. He had great screen presence and you can't take your eyes off of him whenever he is on the screen. He exudes charisma and charm, even all these years later, and you can totally see why he was such a huge movie star.

I’m 70 years old and I’ve been a silent movie maniac since I can remember! My favorite leading Man from the silent era is Antonio Moreno, and my favorite leading actress from the 1920’s is Joan Crawford with Colleen Moore near ‘neck & neck’ with Joan. I think the reason why Colleen doesn’t truly rival let alone eclipse Louise is because so many of Colleen’s films have been lost. She donated a stack of them to NY’s The Museum of Modern Art, I believe in the 1960s, and before she died, she found out that they had all deteriorated because they forgot to care for them properly! It is absolutely heartbreaking. What happened to her films and I could say the same thing about Antonios! If more people could really get into their best films, I think this rivalry would change up quite a bit! Thanks for doing what you’re doing! I’m glad to know I’m now subscribed to a 1920s channel! As much as I would like to do that, I got in trouble last time with copyright strikes for posting things that were definitely in the public domain, one in particular being an American 1920 film. While I believe those strikes were unjustified, KZbin won't side with creators and if they appeal the strike, and it could lead to a legal battle that I can't afford. I hated to abandon the archive aspect of this channel, but it was either that or probably have my whole channel deleted.

You expressed a desire in this video to spend one night at the Pickfair mansion. I can tell you that I worked on the HBO series “Winning Time“. For season 2 we built the first floor interior because it was owned by Jerry Buss, the owner of the Lakers. Though the Lakers organization, the NBA, and nearly every individual portrayed was initially dead set against the series, almost everyone loosened up when they saw how good the show was (though it was not so good that it got picked up for a third season😢) So I would say take a look at the second season, it may be as close as you get to being inside the mansion. I can also say we did a pretty good job based on the fact that Jeannie Buss visited the set one day and teared up because it brought back such strong memories. She said we did a wonderful job re-creating her former home. Oddly enough there was also an electrician on the show who just happened to have been a high end door hangers assistant when Pia Zadora (who eventually had the place torn down) was in the midst of renovating Pickfair, she owned it after Jerry, and this guy had very clear memories of the interior and said that our set was spot on. Enjoy!

I love Colleen Moore. I first learned of her when looking at some of the aunt's scrap books. She was born in 1907 and actually lived through the time these two were stars. Colleen Moore was her favorite and she had a lot of articles on her. I've read quite a bit about her and know quite a bit. I don't choose based on looks, because that is not what I look at when judging who is the best actress. Colleen did a lot for charity too.

I've always preferred Moore over Brooks. While both were flappers, Colleen's modern image was a thinly veiled girl-next-door, while there always seemed to be the femme fatale lurking within Brooks. These days it's popular to wax eloquently about Brook's restrained acting, especially later in her career, but to me it borders on emotionless. I always thought Louise came across better in still photos than moving pictures. Also, she wore clothes very well, arguably better than any other actress of the 1920s. On the other hand, Colleen came across better in film and was a more versatile actress. For me, it's essentially boils down to a 1920s version of Ginger versus Mary Ann (or Betty versus Veronica or Bailey Quarters versus Jennifer Marlowe, etc.)

Louise Brooks, Rudolph Valentino, and Ruth Etting have been mythologized as "tragic heroes" and would quite logically get more votes in polls like these. Pitting Louis Armstrong against Duke Ellington is like a contest between an actor and a director. I know we live in an eternally competitive society but I don't see why anybody has to choose here. As somebody said in some Howard Hawks movie, "I'd hate to have to live off the difference."

If I were talking to a person who was reasonably cultured, I would expect that they would probably know who Louise Brooks was. I would not have anything like that expectation for Colleen Moore, who is mostly known by afficionados of early films. Louise's life was more colorful and wilder; her story is still interesting. However, if it had not been for her improbable later-life second chapter as a writer (and a good one, too), Brooks would probably not be as well remembered today as she is.

Personally, I didn't think much of PANDORA'S BOX. It's not my type of movie. About the only one of Louise films that I really liked was BEGGARS OF LIFE.

I would have chosen Louise Brooks based on her overall philosophy on life. Considering her era. Even by 1920s standards she was wild and free. She did what and who she wanted. Yes she was a talented actress, dancer, entertainer but it's the choices she made in life that make her so fascinating to me. Also Louise made an end of life come back. Thanks for introducing me to Colleen Moore. Never heard of her before and will check her out. As for Brooks, gaze at her hands (3:22 on) on the sofa sitting next to a man. Watch those hands "act." Every finger plays a role! Pale, rubbery spiders, exploring, caressing, feeling their way, inviting and invasive. Such a little scene and yet made memorable by those splendidly expressive extremities As an aside, Brooks manages to form the Masonic "M" with each hand. Due to it being an unnatural hand position it's all the more remarkable. The Masonic "M" gesture can seen in Innumerable painted portraits of historic personages by the Old Masters. God Bless

The thing you do not mention about Louis Armstrong is how he absolutely transformed singing. Think of the pop operatic "When I'm calling you--" type songs. Louis Armstrong's voice sounded as if it had been destroyed by perhaps nodules on his vocal chords. But he could sing with such a superb sense of rhythm and feeling that he ended up making the accomplished singers of his time period sound fake. You absolutely would not have Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennet if you had not had this transformation. This is not to say these others copied Louis Armstrong in any way; he simply changed how singing was heard. This would very much be a 1920s phenomenon happening in things like his Hot Five recordings.

@@HerAeolianHarp Agreed. I think her 'rediscovery' was prior even to Tynan. James Card, film curator of Eastman House, was let's just say a 'fan' of Brooks; a fan with sexual desires for her. He and Brooks soon had a relationship, Brooks later admitted she did so to cement her rediscovery in the film community. Card was sometimes abusive to her, in return Brooks received elevated status in the classic movie niche. I'm not judging Brooks in any of this. We all do what we do to survive. Before her rediscovery by Card she was in a very dark place in life.

Don't kid yourself channel master. It's not about these two talented women. It's subscribers doing their own projection upon them. In the case of Ms. Brooks, her rep as a free spirit, the roles she took (mostly European films, right?) and the subscribers own attraction to a perceived liberality of spirit and perhaps politics. With the talented Ms. Moore we have most of her films lost (thanks, MOMA--sarcasm of course) so she is less well observed and known. But her non-fans certainly know or suspect correctly, she was off screen a Republican, a successful investor and not as much of a free spirit. This makes them uninterested in Ms. Moore or maybe even hostile (such are the current polarities and partisan feelings in the USA). Most of the poll respondents must be female. Valentino was a one note actor. Get beyond the looks and nothing for me. Fairbanks did everything from being Hollywood's first and most famous swashbuckler to western movies to romantic drawing room farces. Most of your respondents don't know the history of silent films I'll bet and certainly have not seen Fairbanks wide range of roles. Besides he was one of the founders of United Artists, and the first president of the Academy (the Oscars). Valentino, a pretty boy who flamed out fast. No contest, but the USA is shallow.

Painted People: Moore essayed the baseball-playing tomboy and Bow, according to Moore, said "I don't like my part, I wanna play yours". Moore, a well-established star earning $1200 a week - Bow got $200 - took offense and blocked the director from doing a close-up on Bow. Moore was married to a studio executive and Bow's protests fell short. "I'll get that bitch", she told her boyfriend Jacobson, who had arrived from New York. Bow had sinus problems and decided to have them attended to immediately. A bandaged Bow left the studio with no options but to recast her part.

Colleen's looks hold better. Super cute especially in that top hot picture. Other than that, she also holds up better outside of entertainment. A successful wife and so in business. Louise was neither, at least when it mattered. Completely subjective, but Louise is not as cute, it's not even close. Her eyes pull you in, but to what? Louise seems to be a unagreeable, save sexually, deva who at times acts insane. Louise's stories maybe more interesting, as bad news generally is. All that's worth is to help others avoid such tragic life paths.

Louise had more of a career than Colleen and those sultry, sexy eyes that stand the test of time where Colleen comes off more as a plain Jane... kinda boring even if nicer because even if you knew nothing about Louise she looks moody and like she could bite your head off. For my take, I'd take Louise as I wouldn't mind being abused by her as she seems like she'd just be more fun and made a greater impact where most have forgotten Colleen where Louise survives. It seems like when you speak of the two that you're trying to convince us Colleen was a star and introduce us to her while when you talk about Louise it's as if you know we already know her and as if she's an established star. Recently, someone told me Louise reminded him of the video game character in the newly released Stellar Blade and I asked him what he thought of Colleen Moore and I had to explain to him who she was... just an explanation of the impact Louise had as she stood the test of time better in regard to the general population. You can just relate to Louise better and she'd fit in better today as a starlet. When I first discovered Louise, I fell madly in love with her and even when I saw her late in life, other than the cigarettes and booze she retained some of her youthful looks that attracted me to her and struck me as, even for all her problems, she could still be a fun person later in life.
