I follow some influencers for styling ideas. I was so chagrined to see each and every one of them wearing a new Louis Vuitton bag yesterday. The same bag on every single influencer. After this week, I know I will never see that bag on any of those influencers. This is the kind of advertising and marketing that is so obviously staged. Vuitton and other high end brands would do well to realize that we notice this now more than ever and it simply seems tone deaf during a global pandemic.

Tbh I dont think a luxury brand needs to work with influencers, its like a circle, they dont want their brand to be too mainstream yet they advertise it through SM and then the prices go up again because they want to be more exclusive. For me personally, im tired of influencers and the whole concept of them.

With all things fashion aside, I wanted to dedicate a word on the current situation in the U.S., as I already did on my Instagram account: What happened to George Floyd breaks my heart. As someone who is in a multi-cultural relationship (my partner is Turkish and I am Polish) we both have experienced slurs and anti-racial behaviour towards our roots. In no way would I compare this to the tragedy and injustice that happened to George. But there are still so many forms of racism that are accepted in society like slurs, jokes and clishees and they keep racism alive. They keep things like what happened to George being possible in our world. The world will not change until WE change it. We need to educate ourselves and our children. We need to call every-day-racism out. Every. Single. Day.

All this seasonal stuff is nonsense in my opinion. You buy this stuff and don’t even get to wear it before the next season is in. Not just the fashion season, but the actual season. And for what? To post a photo on Instagram? We’ve devolved into buying so much crap, people don’t save money anymore and are just focused on consumption and acquisition. The materials alone that go into all this wasted product clogging up people’s homes while their bank accounts sit empty is mind boggling. I personally blame social media for this escalation. Evelyn really enjoy your videos. They’re not 56 minutes long which is a treat and so informative. Wirklich sehr gute Videos und etwas total anders- wirklich toll xx

I agree and totally for cutting down the seasons and merchandise offered each year. I thrift a lot and I figured I could save money that way by getting the trendy colors cheaper but even that way I had to realize I might still not be able to get a lot of use out of it if I only considered that second hand purchase in a temporary way. I still have to commit to that cut and color.

I actually started to become aware and more mindfull about my shopping habits before the pandemic, but the pandemic was a big eyeopening and has most definitely giving me the last push. I will no more shop for trends, seasons, fast fashion etc. I want to create a small wardrobe with good quality pieces that reflects my personal style 100% and that will give me endless styling options. I don't want to take part in any of the other anymore. I want to become more sustainable, that's a real goal for me.

I agree about the idea to spend money on fashion. What i don´t like is to spend money in fast fashion (that creates pollution and underpay employees) and in high-end fashion (that overcharges for average goods and invests in marketing and not in materials and quality). Luxury brands are not exclusive anymore, let´s be real, Gucci and Luis Vuitton are just the Zara of affluent people (or wannabe affluent people). We should have less clothes but spend more for each piece and buy handmade from good, small designers.

Having worked for luxury brands in Beverly Hills, CA and having had celebrity and/or wealthy clients, I know that when money is no object, luxury brands are there to cater to their whims. For the top 10% richest people on earth, price increases mean nothing. It only means something to people who do not have those means. Luxury wont go away as long as there are people with tremendous wealth and here in the USA in the last few months, luxury online stores and luxury department stores have seen significant growth in sales as oppose to the opposite.

Very well said! I can't believe they called it "revenge shopping" haha like they want to make it sound sexy/dangerous/exciting. I've noticed a huge surge as shops are starting to open. Before the pandemic, malls were hardly seeing any foot traffic in the US, but they were packed the other day. I shopped the sales recently to get a few work pieces that I've eyed up for months. But you're right, I've definitely reflected; I've calculated my expenses with my partner and considered my expendable income for the rest of the year. So many things that were on my "wishlist" have been re-evaluated. As you know, there is no much pain in the US right now outside of the pandemic. To be honest, I wanted a moment away from the fear and anxiety today. We're peacefully protesting and doing our best. Thank you for the video.
@brittanymcmcmc97304 жыл бұрын
I've actually thought about making a fashion youtube channel based on my experiences - but in the past few years I had a major shift in how I shopped. And it actually started because I bought my first real designer bag, a LV, and I just honestly did not think that it was worth how much I paid for it. It doesn't mean that I don't love it, but I told myself that I wasn't going to be told what to buy anymore after that. It just didn't seem the type of quality that I was expecting for what I paid for it... Past that, I only bought things on sale, to control my urges to follow trends. If it's discount/on sale, it's old. And for designer, I focused on only buying preloved. Now I am only trying to thrift/prelove clothing/handbags/ect. I feel...significantly better about my purchases when I make them. ME. Not a trend. Not an instragram influencer. I made the decision and it's mine. I don't think that me doing that disrupts a designers/influencers job either, actually. If I want fashion advice, I follow influencers. If I want inspiration, I follow designers. I still look to them for inspiration, but I feel significantly better about my purchases.

I myself have been, along with my husband, very lucky to work full time from home. Because my commute costs quite a bit, I'm actually saving a lot of money doing this. I decided to put that money into updating my wardrobe a bit to be more of a capsule wardrobe with pieces I know I'll use. I did it a lot faster than otherwise due to the circumstances. I get both aspects - and with that balance of folks spending a lot and those not, in the end I'd say it will eventually work itself out to a new normal (if there is such a thing lol). Ironically, buying my first designer bag (and buying designer coats, staple items etc.) honestly changed my saving and spending habits. Instead of buying 2 - 4 Furla/Oroton/ other mid-range bags a year, I'd just save up and buy one designer one every 12 - 18 months. Same with staples like coats and shoes, especially from the outnet. I got a Victoria Beckham, longline double breasted ÜBER chic black coat for $700aud (originally $3,000 aud) and its so classic and I will take care of it. I'm so proud of my purchases, fast fashion doesn't appeal to me.

I wish we could reconcile the need for profitability with sustainability. I don’t have a problem with marketing, but I do have a problem with endless consumptions. For that reason, I don’t necessarily mind the price increases, as that may allow a brand to preserve the bottom line with a smaller output.

Absolutely agree that they need to do business but as you said the companies are being a bit tone deaf on yet another influencer campaign. The influencers will be paid to carry the bags or gifted them for free and then when they are bored of them sell them off so it’s a win win situation for them. But doesn’t promote a sustainable lifestyle which I think more of us are now seeing as a way of life when just over a month ago people were fighting over toilet roll. I for one am now going to be more selective of my purchases and buy fashion that will be carefully thought out and not some trend that an influencer says is the greatest thing ever until the next freebie comes along. BTW love your purchases as they are so well thought out of how they go together with each other and it’s obvious that you enjoy wearing them.

Thanks for all of your insights. I suggest using the word "reward spending" instead of "revenge shopping." Many young and affluent adults feel like they have made sacrifices for the sake of public health. They put their social lives on hold, worked from home, taught their kids in home schooling, and had to keep their children busy all day for weeks on end, all to reduce the risks for the elderly. Now they feel like they deserve a reward. I can understand that.

I don't know it's a complex issue that need to be looked at through multiple lenses. Main luxury markets are Asia, Europe, America. China is open to my understanding for business, but majority of Europe is still on lockdown and US for the most part is still locked down especially the major cities of NYC, LA where the real luxury spenders stay. I do feel there will be a major shrinkage of previous profits luxury conglomerates saw. Unemployment right now in the US is lingering around 24 million and still growing, these numbers represent everything from normal people to high income earners. The main profit maker was regular consumers who bought the sneakers, or the bag, or the belt in search of living an aspirational life. The real luxury consumers will still spend of course as they have not been financially touched by Covid-19 but there are far few of them especially in concerns of larger brands ex; Gucci, LV, Saint Laurent. Also several large American departments store have filled bankruptcy, luxury's preferred method of selling is still physically. The new proposed calendar by designers sounds not very thought and I hope all of them are prepared for salary reductions, if they are only responsible for 2 collections they won't be getting the multi-million salaries most of them are accustomed to. Especially on top of shrunken demand. Interesting times we live in.

I agree, companies still need to promote and sell their products to stimulate the economy and keep productivity moving forward. The world can’t keep standing still, no matter how superficial and unimportant these things seem in today’s environment however the companies and people involved in these industries do need to be sensitive to these conditions when promoting their products and themselves. It’s a fine line we walk at the moment and it’s an extremely murky one. There will be mistakes made by along the way as these are unforeseen times, let’s try to be forgiving of them. We all have to do what we can to get through it but let’s just try to be sensitive to the ones that are finding it that much harder as we are literally all in it together 🌏

Also was deren Konsum langfristig für Folgen hat z.B. Die Bluse steht dir übrigens hervorragend. Das ist wirklich ein Teil was man in 10 Jahren noch anziehen kann. Absolut zeitlos! I don’t think that consume the same amount or more is a sustainable and right future for us. Yes, some people would certainly lose their jobs but I think we have too many people in some jobs (e.g. marketing) while we have too little in others (e.g. doctors, nurses, teachers, etc). If we consumed less, these professions would naturally be filled with professionals to adjust to what we really need in the job market and what professions could operate will less amount of professionals. Once I read that a certain beauty brand employed less chemists than marketing people - it was eye opening.
@thegeekischic4 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thoughts on that matter and I personally would love to see the industry shift towards a more sustainable and mindful direction. But on the other hand we need to "allow" business to do their business right now so that they can stay in business.

I agreed with you everything else except their timing of price increases

O O that’s the thing that bothers me, why increase pricing right now and so drastically? When many have lost jobs or don’t know what will happen to their jobs in the future. I hope that this pandemic will at least lead to a decrease of fast fashion

Love your thoughts, as always. I am wondering -- in which fashion field you are specialized? I guess you are a buyer or a communication/marketing specialist. You are such an inspiration for me, you look very professional and smart. It would be amazing to know more about your career. By the way, I'm working more than one year now in premium fashion e-commerce, but fundamentally everything from marketing til creative briefs, because I need to do everything by myself :( so I try to gain as much knowledge as possible... Thank you again. Greetings from Lithuania.

If you are new in the business, I think it actually is a great opportunity to to "do everyhting" because you get such a wide field of experience that you will definately benefit from in the future:) I was lucky to start out in a similar position. My field of expertise is based on concept&creation of content and campaigns and communication.

I think everyone should be careful about spending money in 2020. This pandemic caused the economic crisis in big damage, and it will take years to recover. Of course, rich people do not count. I was not able to do shopping from Feb. till now which is June, as matter of fact, I felt good, I don't need to buy stuff every month. Though I still have a job and stable income, by clear the closet, and kept less and lesser clothes/shoes, I felt good actually.

Actually I prefer her minimalist lifestyle and her intelligence in her views compared to Sophie Shohet. She’s very direct and straightforward. Unlike Sophie she’s a bit shady.

I’ll just order Louis Vuitton from their online store that way I’ll avoid their lines ;) With Chanel, cosmetics can be purchased from online, and bags and accessories have to be ordered as preloved from places like Fashionphile. I do understand your concerns regarding this time, however I think that luxury shopping shall continue!

I don’t think we will get any shopping with these riots happening here. I’m sure a second round of Covid is brewing. It has become worst here. We want some revenge shopping but realistic it’s probably not happening until fall if we are lucky.Greetings from Los Angeles.

I just realised I was not sub'd to you. I watch your vids all the time. In regards to pre-loved market, I am very disappointed in the price hikes. A 2009 reissue selling near $5K on a popular reseller site. I am seeing CF - and some not in "excellent condition", selling for 2019 and beyond prices. For those reselling, they are making a great profit on their older bags. Well, good for them. In regards to luxury is done, it's time for a reset. Due to CV19 , remote work, lack of social gatherings, etc...there is no reason to have so many of these items. Another reset, is Americans, and perhaps a few other cultures are "luxury hoarders"... I am for one! We have so many bags that look great in our display cases. I'm curious to hear how European cultures, like Germans, French, etc. view this issue. I follow a French woman.. who says Chanel handbags - "a middle class French woman might not own (1) of these bags". Several years ago, during my international travels, I would tell people I had 15+ designer jeans in my closet... They would look at me in shock. I am ready to downsize, but minimalism is too austere for me. Thanks for your expertise.

I think sizing down a collection to the most appreciated and personally valued items really does bring more value to our day to day lives with them. 💓
