Most cousin couples have healthy children. _But the risks apply primarily to couples who are carriers of disorders that are normally very, very rare, Bittles explained. "For over 90% of cousin marriages, their risk [of having a child with a genetic abnormality] is the same as it is for the general population," he said._

Additional information for anyone interested. When cousin marriage is practiced over six generations, the genetic risks continue to compound, further increasing the likelihood of genetic disorders. The inbreeding coefficient becomes significantly higher, leading to a greater probability of inheriting harmful recessive genes. Understanding the Inbreeding Coefficient The inbreeding coefficient (F) measures the probability that an individual has two identical alleles at a given locus because of shared ancestry. For first cousins, this coefficient is 0.0625 (6.25%). Compounding Risks Over Six Generations First Generation (F1): First-cousin marriage, F = 0.0625 (6.25%). Second Generation (F2): If children of first cousins marry first cousins, F increases roughly to 0.125 (12.5%). Third Generation (F3): Continued cousin marriage, F ≈ 0.25 (25%). Fourth Generation (F4): Further cousin marriage, F ≈ 0.5 (50%). Fifth Generation (F5): The inbreeding coefficient continues to rise, and can approach but not exceed 1.0 (100%). Sixth Generation (F6): The coefficient becomes very high, often leading to a critical level of homozygosity for deleterious genes. Genetic Risks Over Six Generations Each generation of cousin marriage increases the risk of genetic disorders significantly. Here’s a more detailed look at how risks might escalate: First Generation: Risk: 4-6% for genetic disorders. Second Generation: Risk: 8-12%. Third Generation: Risk: 12-20%. Fourth Generation: Risk: 20-30%. Fifth Generation: Risk: 30-40%. Sixth Generation: Risk: 40-50% or higher. Key Points Increased Homozygosity: The repeated cousin marriage leads to increased homozygosity (having identical alleles at a gene locus), making it more likely for harmful recessive genes to express. Cumulative Effect: The cumulative effect of inbreeding over multiple generations significantly increases the risk of recessive genetic disorders, congenital anomalies, and other health issues. Examples of Potential Disorders Recessive Genetic Disorders: Disorders like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and Tay-Sachs disease. Congenital Anomalies: Heart defects, neural tube defects, and cleft palate. Intellectual Disabilities: Various forms of developmental and intellectual disabilities due to genetic abnormalities. Mitigation Strategies Genetic Counseling: Families practicing cousin marriage over multiple generations should seek genetic counseling to assess risks and make informed decisions. Genetic Testing: Pre-marital and prenatal genetic testing can help identify potential risks and enable early intervention. Diversification of Gene Pool: Marrying outside the family can help diversify the gene pool and reduce the risk of genetic disorders. Conclusion The practice of cousin marriage over six generations dramatically increases the genetic risks due to the compounding effects of inbreeding. The inbreeding coefficient rises significantly, leading to a higher probability of inheriting harmful recessive genes and a greater likelihood of genetic disorders. Genetic counseling and testing are crucial to managing and understanding these risks.

My 2nd great grandparents Frank Tilton (1873-1954) and Jenny Clayton (Tilton) (1878-1952) are 7th cousins. I wasn’t that surprised considering that their families are from Monmouth County in NJ and have lived there since the late 1600s. Their most recent common ancestors were John Morford (1623- 1708) and Margaret Morris (1630-1720).

Here is a question about the effects of a pairing between first cousins. My spouse has a marriage between first cousins a couple of generations back. After several miscarriages, we had our DNA tested and my spouses came back with a balanced translocation between chromosome 6 and 16 (non-standard karyotype: 46,XX,t(6;16) (q21;q23)). The interchanged pieces involve portions of the long arm of both chromosomes. The same number of SNPs are present, just some are moved to another chromosome. A sibling also has his translocation. We were fortunate to have a child who has a standard karyotype. The questions are: How do the different Autosomal DNA testing companies (Ancestry, 23andMe, etc.) handle the translocation when they process a DNA sample? How does this affect the DNA Matching results?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know that specifically, but since SNPs are identified because of the adjacent corresponding DNA (which is identical between everyone), I would guess that the end matching results are unaffected.

Some names - back an extra generation- crop up often enough to suggest they're his grandparents, but parents? Large families, of course....roll the 24-sided dice! When you say your brothers got the red-hair gene, do you know that by testing or they have red hair? If they do, wouldn't that mean your father was also a carrier? Therefore you know you didn't get both but you have a 2/3 chance you got one copy from either your mother or your father and could therefore pass it on to your children. Is that right?

I'd be interested to know what the source of this statistic that 80% of marriages in history were between 1st or 2nd cousins. I don't know whether this is skewed to one region or another, or one era or another, but certainly from my ancestry, predominantly in UK and Ireland back to 17th century, cousin marriages were very much in the minority.

what I have found for the most part in my father's family who came from a small rural community in Mississippi was not that they married their cousins but cousins on his maternal side were also related to cousins on his paternal side. For example, my paternal grandfather and his 1st cousin married sisters. That means my father had maternal first cousins who were also his paternal second cousins. They did try not to marry close relatives. My grandmother did have one brother who married their second cousin once removed. both of his children were born with health issues. One son was legally blind and the other son had one leg shorter than which my grandmother believed was because they were cousins.

I agree that there is nothing wrong genetically with marrying a first cousin today. But I think that taboo came out in the time where first cousins who marring were coming from a set of first cousins who had married and maybe those grandparents were first cousins too. I think then you are more likely to inherit genes from that 5th great grandparent and that could lead to a higher chance of birthdefects. But for the last century at least families have shied away from cousin marriage so I think now there is a lot of 'fresh blood' as far as genealogy playing a factor in birth defects. To use myself as an example; I am a European mutt. I have no pedigree collapse and every branch I can take back to at least 1850. My family has branches that came over any time from the late 1600's to the 1880 and from various places in Europe. If I would marry a hypothetical 1st cousin (my uncles did not have any biological children so hence the hypothetical) that would be a factor. And while I may be unusual with how far back I have gone without finding pedigree collapse in my direct line but I think that there are a number of people who can go 100 years until they find it.. Actually, that makes me think of a question. What is the average number of generations that someone has to go back to find pedigree collapse? If I look at a 6 generation pedigree chart with me a the point there is no collapse. And after that I start having some drop off because they were born in England and immigrated as a family with a young son, not with parents.

Hi, I support cousin marriages! I'd like to know if there is an organization to help spread the good news that cousins can marry without it being discouraged in societies in our cultures. Second, since the only issue is that of genetic inheritance, is there a genetic test that is encouraged for first cousin? In reality, most couples that are not related don't test for this and they do pass down genetic disorders or diseases. Can you imagine how cruel it is to not marry someone because they have diabetes or cancer? When you love someone, you love that person "in sickness and in health."

It's the Iceland study since they recorded damn near everything. 3rd and 4th cousins reproduced much healthier and were said to have less miscarriages from the mothers immune system simply micecrafting the baby from the womb. There is such a thing as going too far and we've hit. It probably explains a significant reason for social breakdowns.

Depends on where the 80% chance of miscarriage stat is coming from. About 25% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, but unknown pregnancies based on statistical analysis end in miscarriage at much higher rates (no definitive numbers are given in this paper, but based on the statistical analysis miscarriage rates may be as high as 70 or 80% www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/372193v1.full)

Please don't judge... I've had a crush on my cousin for a long time. We don't see each other very often. Only about once a year. We keep in touch a lot and we play online video games together all the time. Idk if I'd ever say anything. The thing is society frowns on it so much that you'd be outcasts if you did make a move on your cousin. We both have a lot on common. Neither one of us likes kids. We're not really interested in ever having kids. So, geneticist wouldn't be and issue. It's more of being and outcast thing...

@@arronwilliams9795 I saw another study where the risk of first cousin for repeated generations (3 generations of first cousin marriage etc), the risk trebled to 7.5%. I think you’re too quick to dismiss the dangers of marrying a cousin. I think anyone contemplating marrying a cousin should go for genetic counselling, though a one-off situation is probably not a great danger, however, some communities inter-marry a great deal. Communities that practice cousin marriage have higher numbers of children with inherited conditions. Here in the UK, the Pakistani origin community has the highest level of cousin marriage and a higher proportion of children with inherited conditions. Because you have people who are the products of cousin marriages going on to marry cousins themselves.

For Ancestry and 23andMe, the kid needs to be able to spit. I've had a 6 year old do it but haven't tried with a 2 year old. Its not a lot of spit, probably about 10 good spits. Family Tree and MyHeritage use a cheek swab which would be easier to get from a small child. No one accepts hair.

A half sibling shares around 1700 cM. But in your case, with your paternal grandparents being 1st cousins, you would expect more shared DNA, around 2000 cM. But the range is probably between 1600 and 2400. So there is some overlap between normal half siblings and full siblings. It is probably going to be reported as an aunt/uncle, grandparent, or grandchild, and possibly a sibling.

Are you sure that 4th generations has no problem? In know that until 7th generation you still have risk; and it happend to a cousin of mine ; she lost both of her children with this genetic desorder; according to the diagnosis this was because they were related;

There is always still a remote chance of inheriting genetic disorders from that far back, but her situation is likely a combination of factors.

I've been observing/ reading some comments throughout this video and some are really trying normalize being okay with marrying cousins. Those that are okay with marrying a cousin are also in the same situation. I just don't understand why they are trying to normalize it? I doubt it was love that got that person Desiring its cousin. That's not love. That's lust. So many 🐈 and 🍆 so why put yourself/future kids & family in such a nasty predicament. Where's your morals & values? Makes since if you aint got That or wasnt ever taught from what's right to wrong.. BUT Don't do this. Trust me, it's not worth it and even though you might come to terms about not giving a damn, you will. It will hunt you & other's will never find it okay & neither should you be okay with it.

I don't address whether marrying this person or that person is normal, acceptable, etc. I just focus on what happens genetically for the purposes of genetic genealogy research. I'll leave the moral and ethnical discussions for someone else.

Look brother.... I don't know your thought process but here in India (Southern Part) there are 25-40% marriages are between Cousin including Paternal and Maternal....and yeah there is some risks of genetic disorder but believe me..... I have met many husband and Wife who are cousins and have children and they are living happily....yeah got few on count 9 out of 252 people who have children with defective genes. And Love isn't bind within Lust Only! We have sex sometimes, in a month or two but we love and understand each other than other people....Love is just part of Life... It isn't life only....we are in relationship for more than 9 year but never think like you made statement here...like we are together only because of lust...may be its your thought process about love and marriage! I too want to Marry my Cousin and not for fear but with understanding that we don't want children...and if we would, then first we will get check-ups done after that... otherwise we can Adopt children from Orphanage, there are lots of childrens who needs Parents to look upon!

That would be your 4th cousin. You are probably not going to run into any genetic problems from that.
