Charlie, the medical birth defects could appear even in the people who have not practiced cousin marriage. You can search such videos on youtube very easily. The chances get more once you consistently marry with in family. So once if cousins get married (as it is allowed in Islam) so there is no problem but once your children grow to marriage age then don't get them marry with in cousins rather marry outsiders. I'll tell you one example. My mom and dad were not family cousins rather outsider for each other yet i am epileptic and my father and other family members in my father side had epilepsy. No age gap matters, as long as people learn the Islam continuously. For example, there are couple who are 25 and 28 but they are not aware of Islam. They spend most of the time in dunya, cell phones, youtube, how to get more and more money, how to get biger home to live etc etc and they don't know what is aqeedah, manhaj, imaan etc. Then such closeness of age even if they live decades with each other would not give them any benefit, unless Allaah wills something else for them. But, as a contrast if they have 10, 15, 20 or 25 years age gap but they are continuously learning and acting upon deen (Islam). Then In sha Allaah, it will benefit them, with the mercy of Allaah.
