I graduated from college in 2009, back then the CTC offered in college placements by Wipro, Infosys and TCS was 3-3.2 LPA. Fast forward to 2022, the package in colleges has only increased by just 15-20k from these companies, what a joke! Cost of living has increased exponentially, eg: a decent PG with 2-3 sharing costs 10k pm in bangalore. Attrition will keep increasing as the smart ones learn and upgrade and move on to higher paying jobs. Indian IT sector is service based (known as the back office of the world), until they focus on ground breaking products and innovation, attrition and moonlighting will be a norm.

That's very insightful. Thanks for sharing your story. That's way too less increase in salary.

Exactly and the worst case scenario is even in private core sectors ,they offer u a inflated package and then give u peanuts as take home salary plus rent,logistics has to be managed from employees end only(for the first month they will offer u rent and logistics but then suddenly u will be left at ur own mercy) and what's more horrifying is that they place minimum 3 years bond for those inflated packages and that too for a student graduating even with M.Tech degrees and that too from national institute of importance and collateral for ur bond is ur original certificates .This is the reason private sector is so much criticized and heavily abused in india and no sane student wants to work in private core sector just because of their unethical work ethics , exploitation and underpayment by showing inflated annual packages
@mainakgayen22412 жыл бұрын
1 BHK in 2022 costs around 15k pm in Bangalore and 30,000 pm in Powai so forget about sharing with 2-3 people and take home salary is at most 30000-35000 pm even for a master's degree passout from a national institute of importance and that too in core fields like chemical, mechanical etc.

Companies should either increase pay to discourage employees from moon lighting, or deal with it. Companies like TCS and Infosys haven't increased salaries in 20+ years. What did they expect?

Companies like TCS or Infy hires in masses, which means they will get many employees ready to work at lower salaries. There are product base companies that give a good starting salary to freshers. So deserving candidates can still start with a good salary. As far as moonlighting is concerned, When you sign the agreement, you accept that you won't moonlight. The company has every right to terminate you. Having said that, the problem here lies with the huge population and increasing unemployment. The solution needs a vast analysis.

I too did moonlighting at one point in my last company. I took on gig coding jobs and worked on them after office hours. I used to earn almost as much as my company 1 salary when i did that but needlessly working on two jobs gets old quick. I never found time for anything and found myself at the brink of burning out. Looking back the reason i did that was because of covid, lockdowns increment and bonus were withheld for everyone that year even though the company was making a decent profit and we were assigned to multiple projects....that didn't sit with me right.

Moonlighting can be catgorized in following ways: Ethical If: - You don't use your employer's Resources ( Laptop. Server, Code, Database etc. ) - You dedicate working hours to your employer - You don't get involved in company competitive work ( developing same product as your employer is building ) - Don't Approach company's clients ( stealing clients ) Why I do Moonlighting: 1. My package is 24 lac, but I get around 15 lac due to tax and tax saving investments. When I work on job with less salary as 12 lac I do freelancing on my wife's name, she gets paid 12 lac and less tax deductions. So total earning goes to 24 lac exactly with minimal tax deductions. 2. My current employer has less opportunities for various technologies that I know so to stay upto date with market, I do freelancing on those technologies. 3. I keep getting product ideas so I develop my product on them and try to sell them as product with hope of starting my own startup. 4. Freelancing pays me higher on hourly basis than my employer. 5. I get exposure of working with various people around the world that my employer never does. 6. I work in a MNC where tasks are less and meetings are more. They hired me as developer but asking me to update excel sheets, Jira tickets and tiny work so I can't follow my skills and passion at this employer. I am working here only because they are paying me. During job hours also I get a lot of free time so without compromising my main job, I can do freelancing. 7. I get opportunities of R&D with full freedom ( no need of approval, documentation or admin procedures ) and also get paid sometimes.

Salary in India is so less compared to the US or Europe ( for example, Android developers fresher in US get $40k/yr, whereas in India they get $4k ). And also inflation and job instability. We will have no other choice than to work on 2 or more stuffs at same time like freelancing or teaching in any sites like Udemy etc. But working for the rival company is unethical... To stop moonlighting companies have to increase salaries and work conditions as the same as what US companies do.

If the IT compaines pay their staff better this will discourage the staff to do moonlighting and they themselves will think about work-life balance. Everyone knows that Pemji (whether senior or junior) have been pretty stingy in paying their staff. These big IT companies do not stick to fixed timings and the work culture forces them to work longer hours to meet targets in india but abroad the same people will have better time mangement and will try to wind up their work after 5pm as other foreign people do. Indian IT compaines are not willing to impliment better work-life timings but continue to ignore the culture of working late because it benefits them and when the employee takes the matter in his/her own hands by moonlighting (partly because of rising costs and inflation in India) the IT companies see this as red and flag it up as potential data secrecy issue. This real issue about IT companies not managing working times strictly as 9-5 and forcing people to work beyond 5pm rather than defering the work to next day 9am which has resulted in people exercise their right to do anything else (as in a second job) as the primary company is not respecting the hours of the clock.

Rising prices, taxes and low hikes and post Covid recession makes them taking a step to avoid bank rupt and please It is wrong then why is India increasing taxes and prices and best example is fuel if a person works from office before 2020 the fuel price is 72odd but now almost 105 which is 30% higher Indians use vehicle for travel which is around 4000 per month who uses bikes now a car is 10000 but now taxes fuel prices and low hikes made them do this and tax payers are mostly techies.
