As you say: less is more. The more expensive the bike is, the more people tend to worry about them as precious objects. We get so many questions on how we prevent our bike from scratching up while travelling overseas, and we always reply: we don't! If you are worried about some scars, its probably better to stay indoors 😂. The bike is a tool wich we use to create experiences and memories and it will tell its own visible story in scuffs, scratches and scars wich , in our opinion, is a very appealing, but different, beauty as the bew bike was. I will accept all the scratches and dents to come with one laughing and one crying eye. 🥲😉 Probably I am still a bit over-careful after strongly damaging my old frame. Nice video, a simple introduction to a very nice bike. I think for touring bikes, more can be more. Anything that makes life easier on the road is a good thing. I am also someone who is not worried about weight, and I am not that worried about speed either; I just want to enjoy my ride.

Thanks for showing your bike with Rohloff hub… it gave some ideal about the setup. I believed it’s a good system but I dislike all those cables and like you mentioned, it look messy. It does make the bike look more. I’m the “Less Is Nice” kinda guy but never wanted to go beyond which means I never understood or able to visualize what’s a “More Is More” bike look like. Thank you for sharing, it means a lot ❤️

Thank you so much for your comment and feedback. I agree, the cable management is a bit messy. And if I want to improve it, I most likely end up sacrificing some cable ties. Not a big deal, but also not very sustainable. More is not always more. 😃 Nevertheless, I enjoy riding this bike a lot. 🚲

As one bike shop owner said, “ride it” Hopefully it brings you smiles every time, at least an appreciation of what it does for you, all based on your choices and labor. It seems more bike than you need for a short park ride but looks like you built it for long touring rides, it’ll shine with that use.

Awesome! I think there is a place for both types of bikes. I went over the top with my bike because it is my one and only. It has to be versatile because I’m not buying another for a long time. So I can equip it for commuting, touring, trails, bikepacking, anything I need. What it lacks in simplicity it makes up for in capability. On the other hand, if you are willing to keep a collection of bikes, it’s great to have some simple one-trick ponies, like a fixed gear, a cargo bike, a road bike etc.

Couldn't agree more. I had the same thoughts about versatility and not buying more bikes in my head when I got the predecessor (= parts donator bike) of the Bridge Club. Now I see things a little differently, especially the advantages of a “less is more” bike in certain situations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I had to rewire my rear brake dynamo light and almost did the same as you, but I didn't even think about checking if it can be routed internally, nice!

You mean through the rack? Yes, that works and it is really neat! But good luck, getting the cable through there. I did it for the fork recently, and it was fiddly.

Nice to hear! That's what I thought, too. I see so much potential in that frame. And then Surly had even added kickstand mounting options to the rear dropout with 2024 model - that's how they convinced me in the end. 😂

@ I built mine from all my spare old parts. Cable disc brakes, big riser bars and 3” wide tyres. So comfortable on the trails.

N+1 I think is the way. Have more is more bikes, less is less bikes, for different paths, routes or purposes. Have more than one bike for all your strolls! Unfortunately my house is too small and can only keep one 😅 Great video! ❤

I use a Velotraum with a similar configuration for traveling and commuting. I was mad when some twat gave me the first scratch in the train due to throwing his cheap as bike against mine, but in the meantime the paint has some more nicks and also some oxidation going on after a couple of winters. I got a bit more relaxed attitude towards the bike; it is covered in mud but all moving parts are regularely taken care of. I say to myself that an expensive bike has to be ridden a lot to pay off :D. Regarding the oiling speed hub: When doing the oil change I always connect a syringe with about 40ml of air to the hub then immediately pull out 20ml of oil/rinsing oil mixture, return the same amount of air for pressure relaxation. Then pull out some more until it sputters oil and no solid stream of oil enters the syringe. Then I wait for 10+min. and pull out some more oil. Repeat. This way you should get out all the oil mixture. Filling it up with 12.5ml of new oil. I had a very leaky Rohloff which I sent in more than once. Since the last service at Rohloff with only 12ml of Oil it works well. You should check if there is a lot of Oil on the quick release bolt. If so, less oil helps. If you have to send it in nonetheless, communicate it clearly during the service call.

Wow, that sounds like a very capable bike and a trusty companion over the years. And probably in an awesome color, as far as I know Velotraum. Good point, that a more relaxed attitude might come over time. Thanks also for the recommendation regarding the oil issue. I have done the oil change just recently. But if the leaking continues, I might do another one according to your recommendation soon. If that also will not help, I will send it in and communicate my issue clearly. Vielen Dank für das Video, sieht klasse aus! Eine Frage: welche Schutzbleche hast du installiert, bzw. wie breit sind diese? Passen diese gut zu den 60er Reifen?

Dankeschön. :) Eine sehr sehr gute Frage. Das sind die "SKS BLUEMELS BASIC 28″ 69 SET". Weite sind also 69 cm und SKS gibt an, dass diese Schutzbleche zu 27.5 x 2.35"-Reifen kompatibel sind. Ich finde es aber grenzwertig. Sie passen gerade nochmal so rum. Bei meinen alten Almotion (2.15" Breite) fand ich die Bluemels perfekt. Wenn ich jetzt nochmal neue Schutzbleche anbauen würde, würde ich "BLUEMELS STYLE 28″ 75" verwenden, auch wenn ich die optisch nicht so passend finde. Bei 8:46 kannst du im Video sehen, dass die Gabel auch schon ordentlich eingesaut wird. Ich weiß nicht, ob das an der Breite der Schutzbleche oder am Profil der Efficiency-Reifen (oder beidem) liegt. Ich hoffe, das hilft dir.

​@@cycgeist Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Antwort! Ich finde den Schutzblechen wird zu wenig beachtung geschenkt. Es gibt viele Surly B.C. Videos wo nur von allen möglichen Komponenten geschwärmt wird aber die Räder komplett ohne Schutz sind. Ich frage mich ob die Leute damit nur im Sommer bei Sonnenschein fahren... Versuch mal im Herbst wie jetzt auf nassen Schotterwegen damit zu fahren - Mensch+Fahrrad wird total eingesaut. Und selbst mit Schutzblechen aber ohne Schmutzlappen werden die Schuhe/Hosenbeine total dreckig und die ganze Kette wird auch total mit Dreck/Sand eingesaut. Fand klasse, dass dein Build Schutzbleche + Lappen hat, trifft man sehr selten hier auf KZbin :) Das mit der Breite der Schutzbleche habe ich mir schon gedacht, möchte auch mal ein ähnliches Setup bauen und finde die Herstellerangabe, Schutzblechbreite ca. 10mm größer als Reifenbreite als zu knapp. Vor allem sind die Schutzbleche oft auch nicht ganz mittig, verziehen sich und dann wird eine Seite sehr stark verschmutzt. Fahre aktuell 65er SKS und 47er Reifen + 12cm breiten selbstgebastelten Schmutzlappen aus Gummi am Vorderrad. Hm. wahrscheinlich würde ich mich bei Surly für 55er Reifen und 75er Schutzbleche entscheiden, wobei die Form der 65er SKS mir auch besser gefällt.

Hier noch ein kleiner Fact als Anmerkung. Je Glatter ein Reifen ist, desto mehr Spritzwasser "zieht" er durchs Schutzblech. Ein tendenziell breiteres Schutzblech hilft nicht wirklich mehr. Und ich kann aus meiner über 20 jahrelangen Erfahrung klar sagen dass Schutzbleche leider kein Allheilmittel gegen Spritz und Schmutz sind, sondern nur das Symptom mildern. Wer täglich längere Wege zu fahren hat, dem empfehle ich eine wasserdichte Überhose und Gamaschen. Ich trage beides seit Jahren von Vaude immer in der Satteltasche mit mir. Im Winter ist das für mich die beste und unkomplizierteste Lösung und nebenbei schützen diese Sachen auch vor der Kälte. Kann ich sehhhr empfehlen!

Fun video! I also have a Brompton and a Surly, I just love steel bikes! I think your Bridge club setup is so perfect as a tourer/commuter, Its actually very similar to my Surly Preamble with the mudguards, rack and more slick tyres. Yours might be one of my favourite bridge clubs I have seen because its setup so practical for road riding. I ride in England and the weather looks very similar to where you are, grey and rainy haha. I also love how you pronounce Surly like "Surely". Surly can mean, grumpy or bad tempered, but the word "Surely" which is how you pronounce it, means guaranteed or definite. I don't mean this negatively because your English is unbelievably fantastic and us British are so ignorant that we don't get taught much foreign language at school. It just made me smile :) Ride safe and I look forward to watching more of your videos!! May I ask what camera you are using to film your rides?

Pretty cool setup, didn't like the full size frame pump on the side where your thigh is. With wide 35 psi tires like that maybe a mini pump somewhere inside a bag would be better. Maybe get some 8 Euro Titanium bottle cage holders from China, those anodized black ones are looking rough.

Fabulous bike build👍🏻...Would you mind telling me what model of kickstand you are using i.e. Flex 40, 18 or other? + I thought I heard you say the pannier takes up to 40KG. Were you meaning both front and rear together as doesn't the tubus rack say Max Load 26KG?...Also (sorry about all the questions😬) What make/model or pump do you have there?

Thank you so much! That is a Pletscher Flex 18. Has been working fine for more than 3 years and I have never seen a more sturdy (single-leg) kickstand. Regarding the racks I know that it is officially rated for up to 26kg and tested by the manufacturer for up to 40kg. Check out tubus' website for more info! The pump is some small SKS pump. I don't know the exact model. Takes ages to pump these big tires and is only for emergencies.

So which questions remained unanswered: How much did you pay for the bike considering the usually 1k+ Roloff, which is not in the best condition as I understood? ... und keine Handyhalterung?

Glad to hear you liked it. Thanks for your questions. I don't want to cover all details in the video but I am happy to answer questions here: - I didn't want to mention how much it cost because I can't really tell. I did not keep track of the costs. And prices of parts can vary. It must be something between € 3k and 4k in total. As you said, the Rohloff was roughly € 1k alone. But a bike like this could be built cheaper, for example by using used parts and cheaper alternatives for parts like brakes (e.g. Deore instead of XT) or dynamo (Shutter Precision instead of SON). It could also be built way more expensively. Similarly specced bikes from certain manufacturers seem to cost way more (Patria Kosmos, vsf TX-1000, Böttcher Evolution Rohloff, ...). - The Rohloff is in good condition, but has been leaking oil ever since the first oil change at the bike shop. Since then I have been doing the oil change myself, inserting only the 12.5 ml oil that Rohloff recommends. I also wait for a long time and at room temperature to make sure all cleaning oil can be removed. But it is still losing some oil sometimes. That's not nice, especially given it is so expensive. 🥲 One day I will probably turn it in to Rohloff for fixing this. But that's also some effort, isn't it? - Sometimes I use a Ram Mount as phone mount. Maybe I will get something like a quad lock in the future. Could be nice in combination with a dynamo-powered phone charger on the bike.

I have cheap bikes that I have spent time to set up the way I want them, service and repair old parts to make them usable so while I don't have much money there, there is a lot of emotional attachment.

I can totally relate to that! I also feel that fixing up a used, cheaper bike and customising it to your own taste gives you a similar (if not stronger) endorphin kick than buying a new bike. 😁

It's an interesting topic "respect" especially with regards to professions. I think these days, the respect we may have once held for the profession itself is now very much applicable to individuals within any given profession, in my opinion. In other words, some people are far more professional than others. I've observed some "professionals" doing the wrong things a number of times. They are often rushing to meet targets. They miss out important steps. If you research, in sufficient depth, you may often be better doing your own bike servicing unless you have found a reliable bicycle service shop. Here in England, you have to be very choosy to find obsessive quality and attention to detail. You seem like a trustworthy source of information in your assessment of quality. If you do decide to get the G Line Brompton, I would like to know which SON dynamo hub and lights kit you would buy... and if with your resourceful abilities, which side stand you would buy for it?

Thanks for your comment and your thoughts. In general I have respect for bike professionals. But I have also had cases where I was not happy and thought I could do it better on my own. And that's why I have recently started to do more and more on my own. Of course, that brought with it the requirement to invest time and money (e.g. for proper tools). I have made some mistakes along the way. But I have learnt so much. And it is fun. Also in Germany, it is hard to find obsessive quality and attention to detail. Maybe I am expecting too much or love my bikes too much. As you say, bike shops have to meet targets and it will be hard for them to put the same dedication and attention to detail into repairs or builds as bike lovers like me. Thank you also for your trust. If I will ever own a G-Line, I will of course share my experiences. Recently, I have done a tour where I got stuck with the C-Line because of sticky mud (one mighty final boss against bicycles 😄). The G-Line would have been helpful for sure. Regarding lights I am very curious what time will bring on the G-Line. I would likely try to get a custom 20" front wheel with a SON 28 hub and an IQ-X, Edelux 2 or even Ladelux light.

@@cycgeist Thanks for taking the time to answer fully. Appreciate that. Just one thing to add from a 20km trip I did today on the G Line... At one point, I cycled along the side of a canal and it became very wet and muddy. I did find that the back of the bike was a little lively and at one point it came to a full stop. I did manage to force pedal it out. So, I cannot say that the G Line is especially good in muddy conditions but it coped kind-of. I wouldn't want to do much more of that 🙂.

Awesome bike. However, 19 KG then fully loaded with 4 panniers and bar bag plus you. After your first tour in the hills you will change your mind about not being bothered about the weight I think. I did several test weekend tours before shedding absolutely anything and everything that wasn't essential or I swapped for lightest gear (except my tent, trangia and chair) before a 15 month tour of Spain. Thank you for your comment. Wow, what an impressive tour you did there! My experience so far with multi-day tours with this bike was good. On steep ascents it was a fight, but that‘s always the case more or less, isn‘t it? I have not done a weight comparison like you. Also not multi-month tours. I get that at this point it makes sense to double-check everything on bike and gear for efficiency (volume, weight, durability, ...). @Cyclingabout convinced me that bike weight does not matter too much with his video about this topic. I am also not sure, where on the Bridge Club I could save a lot of weight. And then if the grams saved would be worth the trade-off or investment. Oh but carrying this bike around, especially on stairs, is a pain.

Die Farbe ist klasse. Ich bin mehr der less is more Typ; bin gespannt was du da gebaut hast :) Aber hey, Surley spricht man nicht Schurlie sonder eher Sörlie mit nem scharfen S.

Great looking bike, it seems that everybody wants the Bridge Club. 😅 I live in the Netherlands and own a Surly ecr with 29" 3 inch tires it has a set up with a mix of XT and SLX shimano 30 gears. Do some off road touring with it, especially when it's dry and sandy and it's set up as a traveling bike. And yes I'm that guy that likes to have different bikes for different purposes, own 6 bikes because I can't place more. 😅 www.youtube.com/@bicyclepicnic/videos is a guy who also build a Bridge Club.

Thank you and greetings to the Netherlands! Wow, your bike sounds like an absolute machine with these massive tires. I also happen to have a handful of bikes. ^^ But similarly to you, I try to have them all serve their individual purpose. And yes, I know bicyclepicnic's build and I love how he has built a great bike but still managed to include a lot of used and inexpensive parts. Very inspiring. On the other hand @mattdesmondwashere has built up a beautiful BC with absolutely stunning but probably also pricey parts. With awesome attention to detail and cinematography. For me it is great to see how everybody builds these bikes in their own way.

anscheinend bist du nur im flachen unterwegs - bei mir in den bergen würde sich das gewicht schnell bemerkbar machen ...

Ich bin meistens im Flachen unterwegs, aber nicht nur. Vielleicht würde ich meine Meinung ändern, wenn ich täglich viel hoch und runter fahren würde. Aber ich denke, dieses Gewicht macht keinen großen Unterschied. Ich könnte eh nur ein paar wenige Kilo an dem Rad sparen. Das wären mit meinem Gewicht und Gepäck nur ein paar Prozent beim Systemgewicht. Wie viel Funktionalität oder Langlebigkeit würde man dafür einbüßen? Ich denke, das Gewicht macht nicht viel aus. Außerdem ist Radfahren für mich nicht nur ein Rennen, es geht mir auch um den Spaß, Komfort und die Zuverlässigkeit. Bezahlbar muss es auch noch irgendwo sein. Und lange Anstiege auf Reisen oder Touren sind auch mit dem leichtesten Rad irgendwann eine Qual.
